This has given the Libraries a more welcoming vibe and bigger reading areas. Check out our Flickr photostream of the changes below. We hope to see you in the Library soon.

Calling All Knitters - Knit In 2010

'Cold humanity is our concern, people caring about other people.'
Wrap with Love began in 1992 with an idea to encourage knitters/crocheters to create squares and wraps that can be sent to some of the millions of people in the world affected by cold weather.

Participating Sutherland Shire Libraries would like to invite those interested in joining this annual event, to meet with fellow knitters on Monday June 7 at 9am to 11am.

For those not able to join us on the day, completed squares or wraps can be dropped off until the end of July at any Sutherland Shire Library or Sutherland Community Centre.

Further information on the project and patterns for the squares available on Wrap With Love.

Book Safari

For two very full weeks Menai Library along with other Sutherland library branches celebrated Book Week, the theme of which was "Book Safari" this year.

We are happy to say that staff and school students alike thoroughly enjoyed presenting and interacting with the games and also preformances by a visiting "Sunday Chutney".

Black headed snake

Librarians log 15th of July 2009:

Its 2:00pm and Menai Library has been invaded by animals as well as 29 excited children. There are lizards running around on the floor of the reference room, frogs climbing up the walls, turtles slowly working their way across tables and a snake has found a hiding spot under the shelves, to escape the chaos.

While we did have animals in the menai library on the 15th of July 2009, both animals and children were very well behaved with their handlers Darrelyn and Tara from Feature Creatures: Mobile Reptiles and Amphibians and parents standing close by.

Children had a wonderful time learning and interacting with the animals. Such as:
•Frogs
•Blue tongued lizard
•Shingle back lizard
•Bearded Dragon
•Frill neck lizard
•both Short and Long neck turtles
•a Fresh water crocodile
•Black headed snake
As well as a Nature table displaying smaller creepy crawlies.

Fun was had by both animals and people alike.

Hold Fees

Please be advised that as of 1st July 2009 the Hold Fee will be $1.00 in accordance with Sutherland Shire Council's Schedule of Fees and Charges for the year ending June 2010.

The fee applied to holds collected from 1st July 2009

It’s all happening at:

Miranda Library Monday 25th May 10am
Menai Library Monday 25th May 11am
Engadine Library Tuesday 26th May 10.30am
Caringbah Library Wednesday 27th May 11am
Sylvania Library Saturday 30th May 10.30am

See you there!

Project Gen Y @ the Library

This survey has now finished. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Sutherland Shire Libraries in conjunction with a UTS student project is conducting a survey of Gen Y library customers.

Are you between the ages of 10 and 26?
Fill in a GenY @ the Library survey and help us to better understand your library needs.

Gen Y is a unique generation in that they have developed and grown up in a period of rapid technological changes.

The objective of the GenY @ the Library project is to gain a better understanding of the Gen Y library customers in relation to their attitudes towards the library and expectations regarding the information products and services that the library holds now and in the future.

The survey will be conducted at all branches of Sutherland Shire Libraries between 8th and 28th September 2008.

RFID Coming to Sutherland Shire Libraries

Sutherland Libraries are moving to a system of tracking materials called Radio Frequency Identification. RFID is a fast, efficient way to track, locate and manage library resources. RFID technology is used in many places such as tracking baggage at airports and postal deliveries.

What will RFID mean to you?

With RFID you can:

  • check out multiple items simultaneously.
  • avoid queues if you do not require staff attention.
  • allow library staff to be redirected to more customer focused services such reference assistance and special events.
Your library will soon be closed for a few days to allow for changes to be made in preparation for the switch to RFID. During the closures there will be some redesign of the circulation desks and entries to the library and new self checkers will be installed.

Closure dates

We apologise for any inconvenience during closures and hope you understand that these changes are being made in the interest of improving our services to you.

Menai Library Gets Creative in Library Week

Library Week is over for another year but not before Menai Library's guests lapped up some special treats.

Menai Library launched a pre-emptive strike on Library Week 2008 with its library promotions display in Menai Marketplace on Friday May 16. We received a multitude of enquiries throughout the day, ranging from Preschool storytime, Rhymetime, foreign language courses and HSC resources to the location of Menai library and it's history in the area. We met one person who had lived in the area for 30 years and did not know that Menail branch library existed! Historical photographs of the area around the Alfords Point bridge showing the old Lugarno ferry allowed a number of older residents to reminisce about their childhood days. A walkthrough by Bookatoo entertained the younger generation, and those game enough for a cuddle received a balloon. As a result of the contacts made on the day, there has been an influx of new registrations and new faces at Preschool storytime.

We celebrated with lots of events including National Simultaneous Storytime, What's Under Wraps and fancy dress fairy storytimes. We raffled a hamper of delights and even offered our visitors morning tea (with marshmallows and bickies!). The highlight of our week though was undoubtedly a scrapbooking demonstration by Lisa Mossman from Creative Memories.

All participants genuinely welcomed the opportunity to attend the workshop and believed they had gained useful scrapbooking skills by the end of the session. There was a lucky door prize, won by a gentleman who was very surprised to 'win anything at all'. Follow up phone calls provided positive feedback from other interested people. The Library's collection boasts a number of books on Scrapbooking techniques. Check them out for yourself next time you visit. Ask us if you need help locating them - our staff are always willing to help. Scrapbooking enthusiasts might also wish to note our Digital Photography and the Internet course. It could prove to be very useful.

To everyone who visited us during Library Week we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did and we thank you for celebrating with us. See you soon,
Menai Library staff.

Love @ Your Library

There was a whole lotta love throughout The Shire on Valentine's Day as the Sutherland Shire Libraries celebrated Library Lovers' Day. All Libraries were decorated with red and white balloons, hearts and chocolates and romantics were treated to book displays of romance novels and more!

Menai Library ran a competition asking their customers to share their Secrets of Romance as part of the fun. Suggestions included trust, patience, lust, spa baths, laughter, oysters, showers, child free time, respect, chocolate, flowers mystery, holidays, money, lunchbox messages, thoughtfulness and some even suggested they couldn't remember romance! In the end LOVE won the day with 30 votes and the competition winner (see photo) was presented with a lovely bouquet.

As well as creating a loving atmosphere in the library, Engadine Library customers were asked which book they LOVE the most, with one lucky customer receiving a bunch of flowers for participating. The most popular books nominated were The Lord of the Rings, Pride & Prejudice (no surprises with the first two!), A fortunate life, Circle of Friends and The Power of One.

You can see some more photos of Library Lovers' Day in the Sutherland Shire on Flickr.

Thanks to all of you who visited us on Library Lovers' Day 2008!
