Miranda Library Week Wrap Up!

Hello out there blog readers!  Library week (23rd – 29th of May) was a success at Miranda library this year with more than 100 people getting tickets to the Miranda library week hamper of goodies. The happy hamper winner, who was a first time visitor to Miranda Library, spent 20 minutes driving around the Westfield car park and rang 3 times to identify the exact Library location.  He walked in the Library to pick up a book 5 minutes before it was due to close on a rainy evening.  Staff were told that he had been a library member for a while, and that this is the first time that he got a library raffle ticket and 1st time won something in 36 years.  Here is a picture of Becky from Miranda library presenting the prize to the lucky man.

We also had something for children over the course of library week with the National Simultaneous Storytime held on Wednesday the 25th at 11am.  Two kindergarten classes from Miranda public school came to listen to “Feathers for Phoebe”.

Just because Library week is over doesn’t mean that nothing is coming up at Miranda! There are lots of activities coming up for school holidays. Just check out our events calendar for details.

Wiggle into a Library this Library and Information Week

To celebrate Library and Information Week, the Wiggles have made this very fun and very wiggly community service announcement about the importance of Libraries and reading.

Do you want to know what the best part is?

It is free to join the Library and our doors are open to all members of the public. Now you and your Kids can spend a whole day here.

Check out our information for Kids and Parents to find out what the we can do for you and your children.

Library & Information Week 2011 - Plenty of 'Stuff' to Be Found.

Librarians are great at finding 'stuff'. These days, there is a lot more information to be found, especially on the internet. A simple Google search for 'flowers' will return millions of results. Figuring out which results are helpful and which are leading you up the garden path (figuratively) is another issue!

That's where your local librarian steps in! Your librarian can sift through the unwanted or untrue information to find the 'stuff' you are looking for. Sometimes it's as simple as looking it up on the library catalogue and going to the correct shelf, other times your librarian will find 'stuff' you didn't even know you could get, either online or in the library.

We're showcasing some of the excellent resources Shire libraries can provide the community in a range of activities for Library and Information Week, May 23-29 2011. Click on the links to find out more about each these free activities and to book online.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2010

Smudge the dog got to meet lots of boys and girls at Sutherland Library's storytime on Wednesday 26th May 2010 when Bruce Whatley and Rosie Smith's story 'Little White Dogs Can't Jump was read as part of National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime is a campaign organised by the Australian Library and Information Association. During this storytime, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously to children in a variety of venues around Australia.
The campaign promotes the value of books and encourages young people to read, share books and become involved in other fun and engaging literary based activities. The campaign is an integral part of promoting the value of reading and literacy within Australian society.
In 2009, over 120,000 children and adults across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime.
Smudge behaved himself most of the time, but the best part of his day was he got to have a ride in mum's brand new red sports car. Some of the big kids also had a turn at driving!
Sutherland Shire Libraries hold a variety of storytimes and other activities for children at all your libraries.

East Meets West - Morning Tea with a Chinese Flavour

Library Week wrap part 1 - Were you at the Willow Pattern Story Author talk and Morning tea last Monday at Engadine Library?

I’ve always been interested in the concept of learning. Observing an audience being entertained and informed is intriguing. Their individual reactions, body language and response to the speaker are all different. Last Monday Engadine Library provided me with an opportunity to be part of this learning process.

The legend of the Willow Pattern story has existed for a very long time. I was told a vague interpretation of it as small child and subsequently have never forgotten it. The author talk hosted by Engadine Library to celebrate Library & Information Week allowed me to learn even more about this classic tale of young love, greed and revenge.

Translator Jingzhe Li has collaborated with Illustrator Lucienne Fontannaz to produce the Willow Pattern Story. Jingzhe entertained and entranced her audience with her gentle storytelling. It was obvious by their comments that most of the audience already knew some facts about the legend but after 45 mins we knew a great deal more. However, during the morning something special happened. A common thread was woven throughout the audience. A 100 year old embroidered tablecloth or a tea set handed down through generations with the distinctive blue and white Willow pattern design connected people as they chatted about their own stories as memories were evoked and shared.
