Who do you think you are?

Track down the truth during Family History Month.
Discovering the past is an adventure which can take people to many places, they never dreamt of going. Hopefully their local library is not one of them!

Your local Sutherland Shire Library provides access to many resources which will help you on the journey of discovery, and staff who are able to assist along the way.

You can see what the library's resources, have on offer from the comfort of your home, however all (but Trove) require you to be in one of the Shire's libraries to retrieve the documents relating to any search.

Find the Sutherland Shire Library home page, look for Digital Collections > Family History.

There are nine different databases linked on the Family History page:
Ancestry Library Edition, Biographical Database of Australia, British Newspaper Archive, FindMyPast, Internet History Resources, Sydney Morning Herald Archives and Trove.

Most allow you to see the range of information they have and search, but restrict access to the original documents attached to any search results.
Come into the library to get free access to those original records!!
Ancestry has original documents which can provide clues to a persons life.

Take the surname Williams. Military records, offered up this document, from the New Zealand WWI Nominal Rolls. For each man enlisted, it provides his Company, Serial No. Rank, Full name, Occupation and Name & Address of Next of Kin.  Use this information to further explore military and civilian records.

Or follow the fortunes of those in the care of government, like Rosa Mooney. She was just 4 3/4 years of age when she was "deserted by her father, mother dead", April 3rd 1865. (Birth date Jul 1860?) Rosa is a sister to ?? and Elizabeth ?? . On December 29th 1874, she was apprenticed to Mr J.B. Evans of Candelo, at the age of thirteen. Newspapers of the time could fill in what happened next? Trove may be worth a look.

FindMyPast is another database with original documentation that can help to fill in the gaps.
Visit your library during Family History Month, and talk to staff to get started.

Discover your family history with our findmypast.com.au trial

Sutherland Shire Libraries have recently subscribed to a trial of the popular genealogy web site findmypast.com.au.

This site can help you with all your family history research. It contains 50 million historical records covering Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. The collection includes cemetery, death, land, military, court and migration records, electoral rolls, criminal reports, directories, almanacs and Government Gazettes.

There are also thousands of social, government and general history records - handy for those with an interest in Australian history or great for those end-of-year school projects.

Our Central Library at Sutherland holds a number of useful resources for genealogists including books, CD-Roms and microfilm while all Sutherland Shire Libraries (excluding Bundeena) have a subscription to Ancestry.com. So if you're interested in researching your family tree, you can always find something to help you at your local Library.

Come in today, try out findmypast.com.au and tell us what you think. You can access the database for free via the PCs in Sutherland Shire Libraries - just ask staff! The trial ends January 2011.

Greg De Moore Author Talk and Book Signing

Sutherland Library will be hosting a talk by Greg de Moore on one of our first sporting heroes. Join us to hear the story behind the book, Tom Wills: his spectacular rise and tragic fall. As well as a facinating story of Australian and family history, sport and biography the author's talk will provide insight into the discovery of a wealth of historical documents.

Tom Wills was the man most often credited with creating the game that we now know as Australian Rules football. Tom was sent to the strict British Rugby School in 1850 and returned a talented cricketer. Tom's life was changed forever after he returned home to the Queensland outback where his father was murdered in the biggest massacre of Europeans by Aboriginals. Five years later, Tom went on to coach the first Aboriginal cricket team. As Tom's physical talent's began to fade, he descended into a different world.

Greg De Moore's historical biography of Tom Wills is the product of ten years of research. This research unearthed original medical records, letters, text books and notes previously believed to have been lost or destroyed.

Tom Wills' story goes beyond sport to become important social history. Come and listen to this intriguing family history, which is also an important but little known part of Australian colonial history. You may even pick up a few tips on researching your own family history!
