Take Time for Yourself - October is Mental Health Month

Sutherland Shire Libraries has a range of downloadable resources that you could use in your 'me' time.
Reading has long been recognised as a good way to relax. Have you ever thought of letting someone else do the reading?  Sutherland Shire Libraries have eBooks and Audiobooks that can be downloaded to your mobile devices. You can find out what eBooks and Audiobooks the library has by searching the library catalogue. Overdrive has recently improved content offering books from best selling authors such as Lee Child, Lisa Jackson, Jodi Piccoult, Patricia Cornwell, Clive Cussler, Judy Nunn, Peter Fitzsimons, David Hill, Tom Keneally. This library never closes and lets you read or listen on your PC or transfer to your e-reader, iPod or tablet.

eBooks and Audiobooks are shown in your library catalogue search results by these two icons:
eBook
2014

eAudio
   2014
The icons with the 'e' as part of the caption indicate the titles which are Electronic Resources. They can be used from anywhere you have an internet connection. No need to physically visit the library to use them.

You can also go directly to the library's Audio and eBook page.
Overdrive
eBooks from Overdrive do not open directly from the search results. First time users should look at the instructions supplied from the library's Overdrive Audiobooks and eBooks  Learn More link help with setup of Overdrive.

Overdrive has a great range of Fiction and Non-fiction titles, which can be found via Encore or in Overdrive itself.
Overdrive allows you to borrow titles for a 3 week period, (shorter if you wish), renew them and place or cancel holds on titles. You can have a maximum of 10 titles out at a time, whether that is a mix of eBook or eAudio.
TIP: Overdrive titles do not appear on your regular library online account, a separate Overdrive account has to be created for each member and loans, returns and holds etc. are managed from there.

eAudio is also available from Overdrive, with the titles coming from over 2,000 publishers and new ones being added all the time, there is something for everyone.
OneClickdigital

eAudio is the only format available from OneClickDigital, so if you want something to listen to while driving or on your morning walk browse through the range offered by OneClickDigital. Like Overdrive to borrow audiobooks from Oneclickdigital you have to create a new account, which enables the creation of preferences, alerts and collection lists.
Overdrive and OneClickDigital require software to be downloaded to your PC or portable device on the first use. All the information required to access these all these titles is contained on the library website under each resource.

Overdrive audiobooks and ebooks: new features

In a recent update to our Overdrive audiobooks and ebooks service 2 new features were added that users of this service will want to know about.

Back Issues added to Zinio Digital Magazines

Back issues of digital magazines are now available through the library's Zinio collection.

The library collection page will contain all of the back issues of magazines currently offered in the library's collection, back to the beginning of of our subscription period in mid 2013 (or if the title was added later, to the date when we first subscribed).

The library's collection page and checkout process has also been enhanced to show more information about each title, including issue date and a list of compatible devices (iPhone, iPad, Android, browser, etc).

Try it for yourself.

One Click Digital - Our Newest Audiobook Supplier

Many of our library members know we have partnered with Overdrive to supply downloadable digital audiobooks and ebooks. What you may not know is that we have recently added another supplier of digital audiobooks - One Click Digital.

Digital audiobooks from One Click Digital now available from Sutherland Shire Libraries

One Click Digital is similar to Overdrive in that you login to a Sutherland Shire Libraries branded version of their website using your library card number.  From that site you can search, browse and download digital audiobooks to your computer and transfer them to your portable devices.

They offer a Media Manager, a piece of software to help you manage the checkout -- download -- transfer -- listen process just like Overdrive; there are versions for Windows and Mac. And they also have iOS and Android Apps available for your portable devices in the relevent app stores.

With One Click Digital, however, there are no reserves and no waiting.  All titles have unlimited availability, meaning all library borrowers can download the latest titles at the same time.

In addition, over 90% of the Sutherland Shire Libraries One Click Digital collection are downloaded as unprotected mp3 files, meaning they work on almost any device including iPods and other mp3 players.  There are some DRM protected Windows Media files in the collection but they are in the minority.

On the other hand, there are no ebooks, only audiobooks.  If ebooks are your thing you will want to stick with Overdrive.

So if you haven't already discovered One Click Digital on our website why not check it out!

We recommend that you watch the tutorial overview video before you start downloading as there's a bit of setting up involved to make things work smoothly.

You can find the details for One Click Digital on our website under Audiobooks & eBooks.

Download audiobooks and ebooks with Overdrive

This means you could listen to your downloads in the car, on the train and when you're out and about. If the book you wanted in the Library is checked out, you might be able to download it and view it from your PC.

Fantastic News for iPod Owners

You can now play OverDrive WMA (Windows Media Audio) audiobooks from Sutherland Shire Libraries Digital Downloads on your iPod. Until now iPod owners have been limited to mp3 format audio books from our Digital Downloads collection due to rights issues, which has meant that iPod owners have missed out on many of the best sellers and most popular audio books. (Typically mp3 files have been restricted to classics and out-of-copyright titles)

That has just changed!

Nearly all OverDrive WMA Audiobooks in our download collection are now compatible with the iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPod nano, as well as Zune and thousands of other portable devices.

To access this new functionality all you have to do is upgrade OverDrive Media Console to version 3.2 on Windows PCs.

There are a few requirements for transfering WMA audiobooks to Apple devices, which you can read about in the Overdrive Help.

OverDrive Media Console's enhanced Transfer Wizard will expand the largest selection of iPod-compatible audiobook titles for libraries by making the vast majority of existing audiobook titles playable on Apple devices.
