My son made me the gift of a beautiful branch he covered with glitter

Background illustration by Mary Blair -A favorite.It was calling for something pretty to hang on it, but what? So I created these very simple birds. They are very ,very light so they allow  for a lot of fun uses. To hang them just put a dot of glue and attach a bit of twine inside a wing and they will look like flying. Hang them to a bouquet, make a mobile or play with them.

 Mon petit garçon m'a offert une belle branche couverte de paillettes qu'il a faite à l'école spécialement pour moi (rouge-c'est ma couleur préférée). C'est très joli, il faut que je lui trouve un vase...Et puis aussi une déco printanière, parceque c'est toujours le printemps en Californie du Sud. Donc j'ai inventé ces oiseaux très légers, que je partage avec vous aujourd'hui. Pas d'utilisation prolongé sans avis médical  Oops pas d'utilisation commerciale, tous droits réservés, merci!

On the first day of Christmas...

D'habitude j'interdit qu'on ouvre les moustiquaires par peur des insectes géants qui trainent parfois ici, mais en ce jour de Noël très chaud on ne s'est pas trop soucié de ce que j'en penserais...Un colibri est rentré dans la maison, vif comme l'éclair. La pauvre bête était aussi affolée que moi, bon sang, et le chat? Elle a finit par se poser sur ma bibliothèque le temps que je lui montre ou étaient les fenêtres. Un éclair vert le 25 décembre, drôle de Noel pas si loin des tropiques. Je crois que je vais mettre un bird-feeder sur ma fenêtre pour me faire pardonner...

Crafty Christmas

Christmas is crafty this year! When I opened the box of trimmings it was almost empty, and it was impossible to find anything...So I apply took my scissors and paint, grabbed the glue and chiyogami paper, made a low budget trip to Michael's, scrutinized my RSS feed and Pinterest board for ideas, and here we are , crafty Holidays!

I first paid a visit to Martha. These holiday ornament are quite sophisticated, but easy enough to be done by the whole family. I bought clear plastic baubles for le petit, and glass ones for the adults, and we didn't make to much of a mess. 

 Here we are, so pretty!

Then I grabbed my favorite chiyogami papers and made some paper baubles. I found the making of these really soothing and ended up making 7 or 8 very large ones. 

 

But I wasn't finished! No! I bought some plastic fruits, covered them in glue, and sprinkled them with glitter. I know the trend is to do this with animals, but with a four years old in the house, it didn't seem realistic to follow the trend. My husband and son joined the fun and we happily sprinkled the dining room with glitter, under the amazed eye of my mother in law. I'm sorry I'm quite childish and not very much into house keeping her way.

But to my point of view, what turned the best is the display of a painting from my dear uncle Bernard Coffin, my placemats, cute vases, cooking books, my husband's gift of flowers and my son's play prototypes for my next book...Maybe a bit on the spring side, not very much Xmassy, but so cheerful, I love it:

Any way, with absolutely no chances of a white Christmas here in Santa Monica, a cheerful spring is a cute holiday vision!

My Nativity for Pomme d'Api Soleil

Please take note : a big difference between the French and American culture is that there is such things in France as moderately religious people, and even (yes) left wing Catholics. When my friends here learned the news that I indeed painted a Nativity for a French Children's Magazine, they were very much shocked, until they understood that it was nothing to be amazed, really. You have Vixen and Prancer an (please!) Santa, we have le Pere Noel (Father Christmas) and Le Petit Jesus (Baby Jesus). So when the very own magazine I had as a little girl asked me to do the very thing I wanted to do as a little girl : make a paper toy creche (Nativity), and illustrate the story of the magi, I said yes, oh yes please! 

Since we are not a religious family, (I'm the only one raised Catholic) , my Nativity decorates my desktop now. I am quite happy of it, do you like it?It's a famous story, and it was very interesting to illustrate it. I painted it the way I see it : about science and powerful people gone to seek for a king, and found a very little baby. I always try to find the meaning behind the dogma, and I hope I was able to translate it here.

Parmi mes premiers souvenirs d'enfance, il y a l'arrivée des Pomme d'Api. Mon grand frère (5 ans?) était abonné, et il avait la gentillesse de partager le fameux moment après le passage du facteur avec moi (3 ans et demi) . Nous nous installions par terre, l'un sachant lire à un bout du magazine, l'autre de l'autre coté. Il y avait suffisamment de très belles images pour me captiver pendant des heures, et je suis toujours fan de ces vieux numéros et de leur magie. Je me souviens particulièrement de l'histoire d'une petite fille et de sa crèche en pommes de pin...Les images me plaisaient beaucoup, et confusément je rêvais de faire exactement ce genre de choses plus grande. Et bien voilà. C'est fait!

J'etais ravie de travailler avec l'équipe de Pomme d'Api Soleil sur ce sujet qui pourrait être difficile, mais qui s'est révélé très facile parceque j'ai très bien,très gentiment , très intelligemment été accompagnée. Le sujet est complexe, et on m'a laissé avoir ma propre interprétation, avec un discussion suivie sur l'epoque, le sens du texte, bref c'etait passionnant, ce qui était très important pour moi. 

Donc on a travaillé sur une crèche de Noel très simple, faite pour des petites mains (pas si facile que ça, croyez moi) , et sur l'histoire des rois mages, avec un joli texte de Sophie Furlaud d'après Matthieu. Les rois mages , pour moi, c'est l'histoire de messieurs très dignes qui sont partis depuis tous les horizons pour chercher un roi...et qui ont trouvé un bébé. 

Puissiez-vous vous rappeler que les bébés sont beaucoup plus important que les rois,

Last minute holiday craft

A look at the ornament box revealed that it was sadly empty. So I really had to get creative this year! I will show you more, but let's first take a look at what I created myself!

These little houses are done to be installed on Christmas lights. I put the color inside so they are stylishly white when the lights are off, but you get extra magic when lit.

I designed the houses in 3D on Sketchup, then unfolded the model with Flattery, made hours of modifications on Photoshop, and here we are. Isn't it cute?

Ca se voit que je suis super flemmarde de la traduc' en ce moment? Holala. Bon. J'ai fait des petites maisons en 3D et puis je les ai dépliées avec un plugin spécial, et après j'ai tout refait dans Photoshop parceque ce n'était jamais comme je voulais, donc ça m'a pris quinze jours au lieu de dix minutes ...Hum. Quoi? Pourquoi faire simple, vraiment, quand on peut faire compliqué, namais ho! Pour ces petites maisons là, j'ai mis la couleur à l'intérieur, si fait qu'on ne la voit qu'allumée , c'est magique!

Du coup, à chaque maison montée, il faut éteindre toute les lumières, mettre la maison sur une lampe, rallumer, et faire Hoooooo c'est magique!

Mais c'est pas obligé.
