A common staple of a fantasy-based story is to have a touchpoint character to lead the audience into an unworldly tale. This character has to be both relatable and unique enough to remain interesting as a main character. This character in Disney's Gargoyles was Elisa Maza, a Detective with the 23rd precinct in Manhattan who first discovers the Gargoyles and ends up being their main contact to the human world. She is a strong and competent character who protects the Manhattan Clan from the humans who would fear them. Her Native American and African American heritage plays a role in her character development throughout the series and makes her even more interesting. I often shy away from buying action figures of plainclothes characters, but something about the sculpt and presentation of this figure drew me in and I had to get her. Plus it helps that she wore this outfit very consistently so it's pretty iconic in its simplicity. I can't wait to see what this line gives us next. Let's check out Elisa!

Gargoyles - ANGELA!
When the Demona figure was released last year in Neca's Gargoyles line, I honestly expected her to be the only female character. I know there are lot of females in the show, but Demona is the token female for the first half of the series alongside a lot of prominent males. So I expected a second female figure to be a distant dream. Angela is easily the second most popular female Gargoyle. She was introduced halfway through Season Two as the daughter of Goliath and Demona, having been raised by humans from stolen eggs in the magical realm of Avalon (where time runs differently, hence her appearing almost the same age as her mother). She's a great character that provides an interesting "outsider" perspective when she joins the Manhattan Clan. The new comics from Dynamite feature Angela on the covers a lot - enough for me to comfortably say that she is the new token female of the series. That said, there are a lot of cool characters who could also use this buck. I'm optimistic! Let's check out Angela below!

Gargoyles - DEMONA!
NECA has a knack for taking properties that I always peripherally liked and appreciated and making me absolutely obsessed with them. Did I ever expect that the adult me would be clamoring for Defenders of the Earth or Gremlins 2: The New Batch toys? Absolutely not. But here I am shelling out extra money to get the figures a week sooner than my preorders would get them to me. I'm similarly surprised by my reaction to their Gargoyles Ultimates line. Thematically Gargoyles seems like a show I would love. It's dark, mythological, and has great character design. But it came out when I was in the throes of high school and it was simply off my radar. When the figures were first announced, however, I started watching the show on Disney+ and I feel like I'm finally having the full experience I should have had back in the 90s; great cartoons and toys on the shelves. Demona is the primary female character in the show and I'm glad she was released so early. She's a magnificent figure. Let's check her out below!

Gargoyles - DEMONA!
The upcoming NECA Demona figure has inspired me to finally review this old vinyl figure from the mid-nineties. This line was unknown to me at the time, but I discovered them on eBay in the early 2000s and I heard rumor that they were originally exclusive to the Disney Store (but can't exactly prove that). They are impressively large and well-sculpted. I only own Demona and she is not articulated, so I assume the rest similarly stationary. They have a quality of that reminds me of supersized PVC figures like the little ones that were so prevalent throughout the 80s and 90s. Demona has odd coloring that is more reminiscent of her daughter Angela. Angela has black hair and very dark wing-membranes. Demona has red hair and light purple membranes. But the sculpt with the crown, belt buckle, armband, and single shoulder strap are uniquely Demona. It's a rare enough of a figure that I'm not comfortable painting her hair, however tempting that may be. Let's check out the 1995 Applause Demona below!

Gargoyles ELISA MAZA!
NYPD Detective Maza - Gargoyles Series 2 - Kenner 1996
Gargoyles is a very unique Disney property that still has a large fan following to this day. The original animated series ran from 1994 to 1997 and introduced the world to the mythos of rival clans of Gargoyles waging war high in the night. The characters were complex and the storylines were dark. All in all it was very original and fun and really opened up new doors for the Disney crowd. It's no surprise that the storylines were continued in comic book form years later (2006-2009) by SLG. Elisa Maza was the main human protagonist of the series (kind of like April O'Neil now that I think about it). She was a friend and ally to the peaceful Manhattan Clan of Gargoyles (and even a potential love interest for the Gargoyle leader, Goliath). Another fun fact is that this character is part Native American, which is a demographic rarely seen in the action figure world (especially among females). This toy is pretty cool, although I think the jetpack and uniform are inventions of Kenner. Let's check her out!

Women of Halloween Part 12 - DEMONA!
The Leading Villainess from Disney's Gargoyles from Kenner 1995
Gargoyles was a surprisingly dark property for Disney in the 1990's. The "princess" films were beginning their second renaissance (Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, etc), afterschool cartoons were dominated by DuckTales, Talespin, Gummi Bears, Rescue Rangers, Marsupilami.. it was all great toonage, but all very lighthearted and childlike. I was gearing up to leave Disney in the dust as I matured out of the genre. Then along comes Gargoyles. It was dark, complex, and dramatic. The character development, far-reaching story arcs, and overall mature themes were a perfect segue for the aging Disney demographic. Demona was a complex character a'la Mystique from X-Men. She was the main character, Goliath's, former mate and mother to the character Angela. The main tribe of Gargoyles featured in the cartoon were peaceful and wanted to coexist and protect the humans. Demona from the Wyvern tribe, however, felt victimized and held a deep hatred for humans. I think the "I'm the victim" motivation always makes for the best antagonists.
