Some Movies Have It Coming

I would like to introduce you to Rifftrax. If you already know Rifftrax, then you know just how awesome it is. If not, click on that there link and lose a few hours. Rifftrax is Mike (Mike) Nelson, Kevin (Tom Servo) Murphy, and Bill (Crow) Corbett. Also known as the stars of a little show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. What they do is create a "riff" that you download and sync up to the movie you want to watch. This is how they avoid those pesky lawsuits. It is fucking brilliant. I would suggest you watch one as soon as humanly possible.

Might I suggest "Predator"? Yes I might.

Another thing that Rifftrax does is some shorts. These things are hilarious and well worth the few bucks they cost. Once again I have a suggestion. Goodbye, Weeds. In this short you learn valuable lessons. Like did you know there was a product that makes weeds commit suicide? Yep. Don't think too hard about it.

Plus this week there is a encore of their riff of "Starship Troopers" on the big screen near you! Go. It is well worth it. In October they are rocking "Night of the Living Dead"!

So grab some beer, curl up on the couch, and watch some awesome. Tell them F'ing Monkey sent ya. They will have zero idea what the hell you are babbling about!

Resolutions Update

And just like that the year is well more than half over. At the beginning of the year I laid down some "Nerd Resolutions". Looking back over that list, I see that I have accomplished very little. Perhaps I should have resolved to post more this year...of course that also would not have happened.

So lets take a look at my list so far this year, shall we?

1) Getting my Eldar fully painted - Nope, not even close. I wish I could use the excuse of the new codex coming out a few months ago, but I can't even do that. I am not even sure that I have put a brush to any Eldar yet. Wow, way to start off on a positive note.

2) Catching up on The Walking Dead *comics and show - Well I finished the first season of the show. Started on the second and have not read a single back issue. To be honest on this one, the show is only okay to me. It does not really have me hooked. As for the comics, perhaps I need to go back and start over. I remember highly enjoying those first two trades.

3) Work through that video game back log - I think I may have played some Dragon Age at the beginning of the year. That's about it. I have never been a huge video game player, and nothing is really capturing my imagination as of late. The ol' Xbox is mainly just a movie and TV distribution unit at this point.

4) Find an IPA that I actually enjoy - Sure did! Well, it is a bit of a cheat though as it is a mixed brew. At a company called Duclaw they make a fractional IPA called "Oz". They also make a fantastic porter called "Bad Moon". Mix those together and you have "The Dark Side Of Oz". It aint bad.

There ya go 1 out of 4 in eight months, and that 1 is kind of a cop-out.
It's been a hell of a year.

Warmachine: Tactics

Another day, another Kickstarter. I have talked about how much I enjoy the world of the Iron Kingdoms, as depicted in the Warmachine tabletop and roleplaying games. Well now they are venturing into the video game world with Warmachine: Tactics. Tactics is a turn based strategy game that is currently on Kickstarter. They have blown through their funding goal on the first day and have also nabbed some stretch goals. Personally I am looking forward to the 850 thousand goal as that is when I get the Thunderhead, a kickass Cygnar 'Jack. Anyway check out the kickstarter and preorder the game that is expected out next year around this time.

Also if you are interested in some Iron Kingdom fiction, Privateer Press has launched a fiction line called Skull Island Expeditions. I really enjoyed The Way Of Caine. Allister Caine is a Cygnarian Warcaster with a penchant for shooting people in the face.

Janitors In Space

Hello. I am back. My extended absence of posting is over (for now). Why have you been gone for a month and a half, you ask? Or perhaps you did not even notice I was gone. Either way the short answer is that I have been making some changes in my life and the blog was kinda low priority. Also I was in Colorado Springs for much of May and June for work.

Anyway this post is not about me this time. It is about a great comedy series on Youtube. Space Janitors.

I am loving this show. It has a ton of references to Star Wars and other beloved Sci-Fi series. It has won a few Canadian comedy awards - for good reason. Every episode has at least one laugh out loud moment. Plus I highly enjoy the Squall Troopers. Right now they are in the middle of season 2 and are looking for some help with season 3. Check out the Indiegogo campaign and throw a few bucks at them. I would love to see the third season come to fruition.

I Needs My Comics, Man!

I have talked about digital comics a few times before. Both of those posts were from a "theory" point of view. I had yet to get a tablet and was just going on conjecture. Well that time has passed, and I think I might be addicted.

I picked up a IPad on the cheap recently and one of the first apps I downloaded was Comixology. Let me tell you, it has gotten much more robust then the last time I talked about it in 2011. Now most if not all comics from the major 2 and most of the myriad of other publishers are day and date with the physical release. So I browse through the new releases and many (many, many, many) back issues avalible. I settled on a book I have been meaning to pick up for a while, but could not find the first issue as it was sold out. Not in the electroic form however. With that I bought issue #1 of the new(er) Hawkeye series by Matt Fraction and David Aja.

Let me tell ya, that is a damn good book. But that is for another day. So I enjoyed the experience of reading a digital comic. You can read it "traditional" style - meaning you see the entire page or you can put it in more of a "cinematic" mode. That is the way I would recomend reading in this form. With this mode you tap the screen and it zooms into the panel and when you tap again it goes on to the next bit. It is pretty cool and allows you to be awed by that splash page or villain reveal.

So after reading and enjoying Hawkeye #1, I grabbed #2 and #3 and so on. Also I had just picked up my physical books from the local shop, and amongst those was the Thunderbolts, by  Daniel Way and Steve Dillon, which features the new Venom.

Well I am not super familiar with this Venom, so out comes Comicxology again. The first trade of Venom is there huh? Bought. Look at that...there is a sale on the entire run of Avengers Vs. X-men I was vaguely interested in that story. Bought. You see where this is going. It is almost too easy. Therein lies the rub. With just a quick tap of a screen you can have sweet, sweet Comic injections. I have had to dial it back and not just grab stuff that had a passing interest to me.

On a side note: you can expect a Monday post about every two weeks. When I can do a weekly post I will, but don't expect it all the time. It is only for special occasions like your birthday or our anniversary.

Cake Fucker: The Return

What's all this then? A post on Monday? I don't even check this site on Monday any damn more. I forgot that Cake Fucker even posted on this site.

I know, right? Well I am back.

There is a caveat however. Shit's about to get real. Even with the unfortunate post date this is not a joke, you will get plenty of that all over the internet.

I have decided to refocus my life. In the past six or seven months I have gone way down hill. I have put on about 20 pounds, started smoking off and on again, and generally let myself go to shit. What brought this about you ask? Well I am about to open up to the Internet at large here, folks. I have what is called Dysthymic disorder, also known as neurotic or chronic depression. In layman's terms it means I am sad a lot. Most people that know me don't know this, even my closest friends and family. The main reason for this is that mental heath issues have a massive stigma attached to them which makes it really hard to talk about. You don't know if someone will reject you if they find out. Having depression, which comes with other things like self worth and body image issues, amplifies this feeling of non-acceptance. So you just don't talk about it. Well now I am.

So what does all this hippie sharing of feelings mean to you? Not much. I am still going to post about Comics, Games, and Booze with my own brand of "humor". It's just that sometimes I am going to talk about what is bringing me down in life. Not always, just sometimes. In some things I am going to be looking for accountability - such as quitting smoking for good - in others I might just need to get shit off my chest. This will be a way to do just that.

If you don't like it, fine don't read the site on Mondays you're not going to hurt the feelings I have left (even if you call me a pussy in the comments...I will just dwell on it for months).

With the State of the Cake Fucker out of the way, come back next week when I will talk about the crushing weight of loneliness.

Just kidding, it is going to be about digital comics and way more upbeat. Promise.

Why Must Life Interfere With What I Want?

Wow, 2 weeks no Cake Fucker Monday updates? What the fuck could this slacker be up to?

Well the short answer is I have been crazy busy at work. My updates will be few and far between until further notice. I know that my legions of fans will be torn up over this news. Life is full of disappointments, folks. The sooner you learn it the better off you will be.

So for now "Good night, and good luck"

I Dream of Puppet

By now you should know that both Ken and I are big Muppet fans. The Henson Company is amazing at mixing whimsy and subversive, and I love every second of it. Henson Alternative is a division of the company that does more adult aimed entertainment. The improvised show "Puppet Up" is like watching "Who's Line is it Anyway" with dirty language, situations, and puppets. I would love to see one live at some point in time, alas I don't live in Los Angeles. Lucky for us with Youtube and The Nerdist channel we can see Neil Patrick Harris and the best puppeteers in the world make dick jokes.

Say hello to "Neil's Puppet Dreams"

I am also waiting for everyone to turn in their homework assignment from last week. This is worth half your final grade, so don't delay. You can turn it in in the comments, our Facebook, or the Contact Us tab.

Nerd Resolutions

It's my first post of the new year, therefor I am going to let you in on this years Nerd Resolutions. What's that I hear you say? Most resolutions don't even last a month? That sounds about right, however Nerd Resolutions are things that are supposed to be fun so one is more likely to stick to it. "How are we to know that they are supposed to be fun? You just made the term Nerd Resolutions up!" Damn you are quite vocal this post, invisible reader. Settle down.

Rambling conversations with my head voices aside I present thee with what I am going to try to do this year.

1) Get my Eldar army fully painted.
If you don't know I play Eldar in Warhammer 40k. I am also very lazy when it comes to painting. So I want to have my entire army painted by the end of the year.

2) Catch up with The Walking Dead.
This includes both the comic (I have only read the first two trades) and the show (first few eps of season one). This almost feels like nerd blasphemy at this point, so I should get with the program.

3) Finish this damn stack of Video Games.
I have a few games that I started and just have not picked up again. Included in this stack are - Space Marine, Crackdown, Assassin's Creed, and Mass Effect.

4) Try to find an I.P.A. that I can at least tolerate.
I don't like Indian Pale Ales. Lots of people do. So I want to find one that does not make me want to throw across the room after the first sip. This may be impossible.

I will update these from time to time so I stay honest and motivated. So you have that to look forward to for the rest of the year. "We don't care!". Why are you so negitive?
So what are some of your Nerd Resolutions for the year? Let us know in the comments, our Facebook page, or the Contact Us button and we will do our best to keep ya motivated.

Also we are looking to drop a Podcast on you ya ever two weeks or so. If you have a topic you want to hear us go on about let us know. Plus the booze Podcast needs rules for the drinking game we will be playing. Put on your thinking cap and shoot us some of those as well.

A Quite Expected Journey

I woke up in the middle of the night with a fever and feeling of death. So this is going to be short and sweet.

I saw "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" on Friday. It was quite enjoyable and did not feel drawn out at all. I have a feeling that the third flick will focus on the Battle of the Five Armies. A lot of the extra material in the film is taken from the LOTR appendices and the "prequal" story The Quest of Erebor.

I did not see it in 3D as my disdain for that format is well known. Therefor I can not comment on the 48 frames per second controversy.

I am off to self medicate and sleep so throw your opinions of the movie down in the comments or on our Facebook page. Also check out That F'ing Monkey Podcast and let me know what you think.

Comic Immersion

This weekend I was finally able to pick up some comics. Among my purchases were some of the new Marvel Now books. The Marvel Now initiative is a bit of a soft reset on the Marvel Universe not quite as drastic as the New 52 over at DC. One of the books was the new Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender and John Cassaday. It flows directly out of the A vs. X mega event of last summer. The problem was I had not read A vs. X. I needed a primer on the story. Welp, there's an app for that.

The Marvel Augmented Reality App for your smart phone.

With the AR app you aim your camera at any cover or page that has the AR symbol on it and it gives you a little video that applies to that page.

On the Uncanny Avengers cover, it gives you a quick run down of what happened in the A vs. X story line that pertains to the story you are about to read.

It might currently be a bit of a misnomer with the "augmented reality" as so far it just gives a bit of backstory or a speech by Wolvierine. However it is a pretty cool app. Plus it is free, so if you read Marvel books it is worth the download.

Enterprise, Nope Not That One...

Last week I had completed one of the great Nerd Quests. I stood on the bridge of the Enterprise. In fact it was the Enterprise that actually sailed. That's right folks I am talking about the air craft carrier CNV 65, not NCC 1701. I still call it a win.

If you have never see an air craft carrier in real life, that fucker is huge.

On Saturday Dec 1st 2012, the Enterprise was inactivated and will soon be retired and cut into scrap metal. It was the first Nuclear powered carrier and had a 52 year life.

Why should I care you say? Well it is still the fucking Enterprise. And I stood on the bridge while it was still an active vessal, I also sat in the captains chair. It was pretty damn cool. Since I will most likely never stand on the bridge of the starship Enterprise I feel that this Nerd Quest was completed to satisfaction.

Don't fret though, as the Enterprise name will not be out of the fleet for long. The next carrier to be built, CVN 80, will bear the name and continue the legacy.

This was my view for most of the week.

Anyway this was a bit of a detour from the Comics, Games, and Booze ethos, but I hope you enjoyed seeing a piece of ancillary Nerd history. If you want to see the ceremony head over to the Navy website. Be aware it is a whole lot of talky talky.

Prepare To Be Judged

As of late I have been on a bit of a Judge Dredd kick. I blame the flick Dredd for this. For it was quite awesome (super short review with no context: a bunch of rookie vs. veteran and cop movie cliches, but working together in a great way). To that end I decided to pick up volume one of "Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files".

Having only read a story or two here and there through out my comics reading career I have but a passing knowledge of the Dredd mythos. He is a lawman in the late 21st century where most of America is a irradiated wasteland and the population has been combined into Megacities. Dredd started (and still resides) in the pages of British comic magazine 2000 AD in the late '70s and continues to this day.

The stories that I have read so far are firmly ensconced in the '70s comics feel. They are fun and have a...lets say odd sense of humor. An interesting thing about the Dredd books is that time actually passes and the characters get older. Dredd starts as a young Street Judge and progresses and ages as real time passes. At some point the titular character will die and the story will be complete.

If the only exposure to Judge Dredd was the god awful 1995 Stallone flick and you enjoy British action set in America's future mixed with a dark sense of humor and voice activated weapons, I would recommend checking out the Judge.

Current full on Nerd project.
Also we have recorded episode 0 of That F'ing Monkey's podcast and I am currently editing it. Expect it to be available no later than Friday if all goes according to plan. We will let you know on all of our outlets, including Twitter, Facebook and of course F'ing Monkey.com.

Damn You Sandy!

Welp, the super storm Sandy is hitting landfall right over me. So if this is posted then I don't have power. See ya next week.

I hope...

I Need Your Help! A Comic Question

Now that I am back in civilization I now have a local comic store again. I have talked about what I feel are the virtues of local brick and mortar comic shops before.

Not my local shop of course, that is Aw Yeah Comics in the Chicago area.
However this blessing is also a curse. How can it be a curse you say? Well it has been so long since I had a local shop that I am out of touch. I don't know that to read, what books to pick up, what is worth my time. I am going to be picking up my few staples such as Daredevil.

Check it out Matt is smiling! That's new.
I will also be picking up the Lantern books and doing a review of the first year in the vain of Ken's Flash review series

So I put it to you dear reader - what should I be reading these days? What is your favorite book these days?

Let me know what I should be picking up when I go to the shop in the comments, our Facebook page, or hit the contact us tab up at the top of the page.

Games Workshop Nerdvana

I have been in Maryland for about a month now and for the past few Saturdays I have been spending most of the day in the Bowie Battlebunker. The Battlebunker is a Games Workshop store that has a huge gaming area along with the normal sales area. The tables are amazing with tons of terrain and objectives to fight over. There is also a couple of hobby bars where you can sit and put models together and paint. All that creativity is slowly shaming me into getting my army fully painted. Some day...

There is also a bunch of display cases scattered around with some great looking mini's.

So far I have not won a game under the Battlebunker roof. My Eldar have lost both on the ground and in space (they also play lot of specialist games, like Battlefleet Gothic). However it is a blast hanging out with the people and staff, even if they all cheat to make me look bad.

So if you are in the Bowie, MD area swing by and I will throw some dice with ya and grab a brew after. Also Ken keeps threatening to put a bounty on my head....

Wanna game? Don't care at all about little army men? Let Your F'ing Voice Be Heard! On our Facebook, in the comments, or the Contact Us tab up at the top of the page.

I Hath Returned To The Mortal Realm!

Look who's back! That's right, folks - your friendly neighborhood Cake Fucker! It has been about 2 months since you have gotten to read my inane postings, but you can relax as regular scheduled posts have now returned. "Where have you been O' lover of pastries?" I can hear you say. Well I have been relocating the satellite office of That F'ing Monkey from West Texas to Maryland. Yep I am finally back in civilization! No more "secede now!" bumper stickers, truck nuts, and listening to "don't mess with Texas!" every ten minutes.

That seems like a great idea...
So you can expect me to be back every week from here on out, with my own brand of nonsense and Nerd Rage. Be sure to tune in next Monday for a look at my second home as of late...The Bowie Battlebunker. Also make sure that you are following the amazing new webcomic done by our CEO, The Ballad of Kid Largo updating on Wednesdays. As always Let Your F'ing Voice Be Heard in the comments, our Facebook page, or the Contact Us Tab! I shall leave you with my favorite "Gunganm Style" video because this is the internet and no site is complete without one...

Enjoy and see ya next week!

Boldly Continuing

Once again I am going to have to let you know that my posts will be erratic for the next month or so. Hopefully next week I can make the reason why public. Until then check out this fantastically made Star Trek web series. This is just a couple random scenes that were shot as a proof of concept. Of course something that looks this damn good will most likely be shut down by Paramount mad quick.

Aquabro

I am working on battening down the hatches at work and prepping to hit up Chi-Town for Games Workshop's Mini-Con Games Day this weekend. So yet another quick post today. But it is pretty awesome. Check it...
