Bellinger glasses in cotton candy colours

Bellinger glasses 2015

It's a bold eyewear house that breaks the mould by baking its own acetate, but the designers at Bellinger do just that.

Bellinger acetate creates a beautiful play of colors with unique patterns. A dough of cotton, acetone and alcohol is mixed, filtered, kneaded, heated and finally pushed into large blocks. And that's when the creative work begins resulting in some amazing effects. It's a bit like old-fashioned candy say the Danish company as demonstrated by these great images which I picked up at the recent 100% Optical show in London.

Theo glasses in Rye - incomparably good

Theo glasses in Rye - incomparably good

Met this delightful woman in Rye, East Sussex, last weekend and simply had to ask if her specs were by Theo. Indeed they are. I'm not sure which model. She also told me where she purchased them in Brussels, so I'll be adding that to my list of places to buy cool glasses... more soon (honest!)

Studio Swine is a London-based design art and fashion house run by Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves. EWG likes - particularly the clips! Above are some creations made for London Fashion Week reflecting the Icarus theme of Jane Bowler's womenswear collection. And below are Hair Glasses, which comprise human hair with bioresin as a binding agent. The frames are 100% biodegradable and no harmful substances are released during production...

Sons + Daughters Eyewear: so slick you'll wish they were bigger

Kids' eyewear is rarely top-quality. It's kind of assumed children's sunglasses will get sat on or lost, so why invest?

But EWG thinks more frames probably fall apart because they're cheap and poorly made.

So we're interested to hear about Canadian brand Sons + Daughters that says its glasses are "so slick that parents will be wishing they came in big head sizes".

Certainly looks good: we particularly like Lenny in orange... a bit bigger please!

Wooden frames get colourful, but only on FEB31st

FEB31st Crux glasses

FEB31st Ara glasses

FEB31st Auriga glasses

FEB31st is a new brand from Italy which is providing a new take on wooden frames by creating a collection in natural wooden finishes but in bright colours inside and/or outside.

Designer Valerio Cometti presented the new collection earlier this month in Paris. FEB21st says its frames weigh only 21 grams, they have a reinforced nosepads and a clever method for getting the lenses in.

From the top: Crux (x3), Ara and Auriga. The FEB31st collection includes nine models: four for men, three for women and two unisex; four of these frames are available also for sunglasses. Below, three more Crux and Cygnus Sun.

Ewe year glasses - Fendi 2011 sunglasses. Don't follow sheep

Ewe year glasses! Can't believe I've only just spotted that play on words.

Don't just follow sheep next year by buying some non-descript conservative shite. Try something different. Things appear to be getting exciting!

Fendi joins Prada (my last post), in the big-label, bigger-and-bolder-is-better approach with these great "W" shades. Would you wear them?

Prada 2011 glasses and sunglasses - the bolder the better

Prada SS2011 sunglasses - the bolder the better

2011 could be an exciting year for eyewear if these Prada spring-summer 2011 ads are anything to go by...

Whether these elaborate sunglasses make it into production remains to be seen. Recent Prada show pieces have been released, so fingers crossed (see Prada Swing and the PR19MS)!

Theo scores a hat-trick with Trilby, Panama, Gatsby and more...

Theo 2011 glasses collection scores a hat-trick with Gatsby...
Theo 2011 glasses collection scores a hat-trick with Panama...Theo 2011 glasses collection scores a hat-trick with Trilby...Often when I hear about themed eyewear collections my eyes roll upward and a semi-audible "tut" may be detected.

And that is of course because they're so often a sign a desperation, a lack of good ideas. Not with my little Belgian friends at Theo though, oh no.

Every collection from Theo is different, and Theo's HatStyles is elegantly so.

My recent Scandinavian tour (Iceland, and Denmark particularly) highlighted a large, minimalist, aviator-inspired, old-school granddad spectacle style that may become the retro-look of choice in 2011. And Theo joins in here a little, but only with a clever tip of the hat.

Here we feature Gatsby (top-to-bottom), Panama and Trilby. Designed by Patrick Hoet, they feature a single outline frame that holds the lenses, and each design relates directly to the hat of the same name. There's Stetson and Borsalino too - visit the Theo website for more...

Kirk Originals glasses walk on water - the 2010 Sculpture collection

Kirk Originals Sculpture glasses - Otis grey and scarlet

...Well perhaps walk is an exagerration, but these glasses from Kirk Originals' Sculpture range, to be released in Milan in two weeks, are pretty miraculous. This one is Otis, in grey and scarlet but there are six new shapes in nine new colourways. The fronts are acetate while the temples, which appear to be textured yet smooth, are acrylic. Take yourself off to Kirk Originals' site (always fun) to find out more.
