Easy & Simple 1/6th scale Tier 1 SMU Part VI Tandem HALO Jumper Pack of Two figures

Paratroopers are military parachutists—military personnel trained in parachuting into an operation and usually functioning as part of an airborne force. Military parachutists (troops) and parachutes were first used on a large scale during World War II for troop distribution and transportation. Paratroopers are often used to seize strategic objectives such as airfields or bridges. Paratroopers are used for tactical advantage as they can be inserted onto the battlefield from the air, thereby allowing them to be positioned in areas not directly accessible by other transportion. They jump out of airplanes and use parachutes to land safely on the ground. It is one of the three types of "forced entry" strategic techniques for entering a theater of war; the other two being by land and by water. The ability of air assault to enter the battlefield from any location allows paratroopers to evade emplaced fortifications that exist to prevent an attack from a specific direction, and the possible use of paratroopers forces an army to spread their defenses to protect other areas which would otherwise be safe by virtue of geography or defensive positions.

Tandem skydiving or tandem parachuting refers to a type of skydiving where a student skydiver is connected to a harness attached to a tandem instructor. The instructor guides the student through the whole jump from exit through freefall, piloting the canopy, and landing.

Dam Toys 1/6th scale Russian Airborne Troop VDV Natalia 12-inch female paratrooper figure

The Russian Airborne Troops or VDV (from "Vozdushno-desantnye voyska Rossii", Russian: Воздушно-десантные войска России, ВДВ; Air-landing Forces) is a military branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. They are an elite force, on par with the Strategic Rocket Forces and the Aerospace Defence Forces. First formed before World War II, the force undertook two significant airborne operations and a number of smaller jumps during the war and for many years after 1945 was the largest airborne force in the world. The force was split after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, losing divisions to Belarus and Ukraine, and has been reduced in size. Russian airborne forces have traditionally worn a blue beret and blue-striped telnyashka and are called "desant" (Ru:Десант) from the French "Descente".

New from DID: Paratrooper 3rd RPIMa Algeria 1961

This is DID's upcoming release, a 1/6 scale Parachutiste 3ème RPIMa Algérie 1961 (translated: Paratrooper 3rd RPIMa Algeria 1961) 12-inch military figure "Henri". Henri will be available in May 2011 (according to their website). This is DID's second French figure after their earlier release - a French Foreign Legion 2nd BEP military action figure as he was in 1954 Indochina (previewed HERE).

The French wear their beret on the opposite side to the U.S. and U.K. i.e. leaning to the left. He's armed with the MAT-49 and a greener shade French lizard camouflage para uniform. The MAT-49 was a submachine gun developed by French arms factory Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Tulle (MAT) for use by the French Army. The MAT-49 saw widespread combat use during the First Indochina War and the Algerian War, as well as the 1956 Suez Crisis. The weapon found considerable favor with airborne and mechanized troops, who prized it for its firepower and compactness.

Sideshow Battle of Crete: German Paratrooper PREVIEW

On the morning of May 20, 1941, World War II was well underway, threatening innumerable lives as Hitler's Third Reich invaded country after country. As Greek and Allied troops defended the isle of Crete, Nazi Germany launched a massive airborne paratrooper assault on the island. Unprepared for such an invasion, the Allied commanders lost control of the their main airfield, and German troops flooded the island in an ongoing battle that would last for ten days, ultimately ending in the loss of Crete to German forces despite staggering losses in their own ranks.

In the end, the Battle of Crete would be marked a failure by both sides. The great number of casualties to the Germans was considered too great to risk another large-scale airborne attack, and the Allied forces would count the island among the fallen territories. Even so, the Allies' admiration for Germany's planning and execution of the airborne trooper invasion lead to significant advancements in their own paratrooper divisions. As World War II waged on, the lessons of Crete would resonate with both Germany and the Allied forces.

Soldier Story U.S. 101st Airborne Division, Bastogne 1944 PREVIEW

This is a GREAT time for 1:6 scale military collectors who are into WWII US Paratroopers (that's me) because things just got even better. Having previewed the DID 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Officer "Major Richard" in the last post, now official pictures have been released of Soldier Story's next offering - a 1:6 scale 12-inch United States Army 101st Airborne Division paratrooper as he would have been equipped at Bastogne in December 1944 during the Second World War.

He looks to be from the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during the siege of Bastogne. The two-buckle boots look to be outstanding and the M-1928 Haversack is closely associated with the 327th GIR.

DID 2nd Bn, 506th P.I.R. "Major Richard" Preview

"Band of Brothers" is a 2001 ten-part television World War II miniseries based on the book of the same title written by historian and biographer Stephen Ambrose. The executive producers were Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who had collaborated on the World War II film "Saving Private Ryan (1998)". The narrative centers on the experiences of "E" Company ("Easy Company") of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. [source: wiki]

The main character of the show is arguably Major Richard Winters (1918–), played by Damian Lewis, who leads the cast for most of the episodes and is the main subject of the episodes "Day of Days", "Crossroads" and the final episode, "Points".

And now from DiD comes news that they will be releasing another World War II US Army Paratrooper, "Major Richard" of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, United States Army. Major Richard will come complete with his full set of attire, equipment and gear plus parachute (main and reserve) all ready to do battle in Europe!

Soldier Story WWII 101st Airborne: Jake McNiece Preview

Soldier Story has announced their next boxed figure set, the D-Day 66th Anniversary Set, WWII 101st Airborne: Jack McNiece from the "Filthy 13" (ETA July 2010) - the original person who inspired the Mohawk look in modern warfare.

The Filthy Thirteen was the name given to a sub-unit of the regimental headquarters of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, of the United States Army, which fought in the European campaign in World War II. This unit was selected and trained to demolish enemy targets behind the lines. They were assigned to destroy a bridge over the Douve River during the Normandy Invasion of Europe in June 1944, a mission that cost the lives of most of these men. The group was airdropped for the mission by aircraft of the 440th Troop Carrier Group of the U.S. Army Air Force.

Soldier Story 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division Ardennes 1944 Preview

If you'd missed out on all the Dragon 1/6 scale Fallschirmjägers in the past, this is a great way to start. Soldier Story will be releasing their version of a 1/6 scale 12-inch World War II 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division German Paratrooper from Ardennes, 1944.

Who does the head sculpt resemble? There's a bit of Peter Weller's likeness from RoboCop fame, Viggo Mortensen (the enigmatic Command Master Chief John Urgayle from "G.I. Jane") and the exceptional Christoph Waltz, best known for his portrayal of SS Standartenführer (Colonel) Hans Landa in the 2009 film "Inglourious Basterds", for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010, the second Austrian actor to receive an Oscar.

The 1/6 Luger P08 pistol is amazing. Certainly the first of its kind.

He also comes with a captured G.I. weapon, the M1 Carbine. Spoils of war.

Group Action Joe Israeli Paratrooper

Group Action Joe or Action Joe for short was the French license for G.I. Joe, action figures for boys. The line was developed in 1976 and lasted till 1981. The French versions updated new features and lots of outfits were created. Some of them like the French Republican Guard are very sought after nowadays.

One of the unique figures was this Group Action Joe Israeli Paratrooper

The 1/6 scale Group Action Joe Israeli Paratrooper outfit set came with paratrooper's helmet, green jacket and trousers, scarf, webbing with ammo pouches, canteen and holder, first aid pouch, Uzi sub-machine gun, grenades, radio and black ankle boots.

Before there was Enterbay's movable eyes system ("Ball-Eye System" or BES) or Hot Toys P.E.R.S. (Parallel Eyeball Rolling System), there was the "Eagle Eyes" introduced in 1976 for Action Man 12-inch figures. Let's not forget the first innovation for Action Man was a form of flocking giving the effect of a short "fuzzy" hairstyle in 1970.

Perhaps the earliest 1/6 scale Uzi sub-machine gun ever produced. The first Uzi (Hebrew: עוזי‎, officially cased as UZI) submachine gun was designed by Major Uziel Gal in the late 1940s. The prototype was finished in 1950; first introduced to IDF special forces in 1954, the weapon was placed into general issue two years later. The Uzi has found use as a personal defense weapon by rear-echelon troops, officers, artillery troops and tankers, as well as a frontline weapon by elite light infantry assault forces.

Group Action Joe 1:6 scale 12-inch Israeli Paratrooper gripping his radio and communicating with it (this 1/6 scale radio walkie-talkie was similar to the ones issued for G.I. Joe and Action Man UK)

Note the gripping hands which were introduced by Palitoy, the U.K. licensee for G.I. Joe (the figures were named Action Man) in 1973; the hard moulded hands of the original were replaced by rubber "Kung Fu grip" hands with the ability to grip and hold onto the weapons and accessories.

Armoury 1/6 scale Israeli IDF Paratrooper

This Armoury 1:6 scale 12-inch Modern Israeli IDF Paratrooper was released in 2001 and came equipped with Paratrooper's helmet, OD Green Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) consisting of shirt and pants. He has on him his flak jacket with Ephod Harness Vest with two (2) Water Canteens in carriers, four (4) 35-round rifle magazines in their magazine pouches, four (4) utility / grenade pouches, bayonet in scabbard, butt pack and backpack plus brown combat jump boots. He is armed with the Galil 5.56mm SAR (Standard Assault Rifle) with folding stock.

I didn't like the original 1:6 figure Armoury provided and switched to this shorter Medicom figure instead. I felt that the original Armoury figure was too tall and had too long legs.

I decided to post pictures of this 12-inch tall military figure after coming to know a fellow blogger yesterday. DoubleTapper is a true-blue Israeli military guy, the real deal and he has even trained our local troops. Even his name hints at his profession. The term "double tap" is used to describe the technique of firing two rounds quickly and accurately to disable an opponent. The tactic is used by firearms handlers, police tactical teams, military personnel, counter-terrorist combat units and other special forces personnel.

So do drop by his blog site as he blogs from Israel on guns, self defense and whatever else he feels like blogging about :)

The IDF paratroopers have earned a hard-won reputation for strict discipline, courage, initiative, dedication to duty and the highest standards of performance. They have consistently been at the forefront of the IDF and have set behavioral and operational norms for others to emulate.

The IDF Paratrooper Brigade (Hebrew: חֲטִיבַת הַצַּנְחָנִים‎, Hativat HaTzanhanim), also known as the 35th Brigade, is a unit of paratroopers within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and forms a major part of the Infantry Corps. It has a history of carrying out special forces-style missions dating back to the 1950s. [source: DoubleTapper]

Serving in the brigade is voluntary and requires passing a one and a half day physical test in order to be to join the brigade.

Soldiers of the IDF Paratroopers Brigade are distinguished by their maroon beret, paratrooper jump wings, brown leather jump boots and the paratroopers tunic, which is slightly different from the regular ground forces service dress in that it has 4 pockets and is worn outside the pants.

A closer look at the 1:6 scale flak jacket with Ephod Harness Vest and its accompanying magazine and grenade / utility pouches

Here's a close-up shot of the Galil 5.56mm SAR (Standard Assault Rifle) with folding stock. The Galil’s design is optimized for operation in arid conditions and is based on the Finnish RK 62, which itself was derived from the Soviet AK-47 assault rifle. It was selected as the winner of a competition for the Israel Defense Forces that included many other rival designs (among them, the M16A1, Stoner 63, AK-47 and HK33) and was formally accepted into service in 1972, replacing the dust-sensitive FN FAL. [source: wiki]

UPDATED April 17, 2010: DoubleTapper's has contributed these comments which I think are very noteworthy - "The paratrooper is from the 1980's as the Galil rifle has not been standard issue in the IDF since then. IDF Paratroops are now issued the M4. His rifle should always be slung, either over the neck or over the right shoulder and neck and hung across the back. The IDF helmet used is the old style cover as well. The boots are the old toe capped style too. The Jacket used was never issued in the IDF as field gear. Unfortunately we never got jackets with a pocket on the sleeve. Also the IDF Paratrooper is much too old. You need a much younger head. The IDF is made up of conscripts drafted at 18 and released at 21. We have virtually no combat NCO corps so the action figure looks out of place. Alternatively you can add a Lt Col (age 32) or Col (age 40) ranks to his shoulder boards.

If you put the Bruce Willis head on you can say that it is DoubleTapper in the IDF Reserve paratroops circa 1980's :) "

Toys City Fallschirmjäger Oberst, Ardennen 1944 Preview

1:6 scale 12-inch Fallschirmjägers and Germans have been done to death since Dragon started releasing their first WWII German NCO "Hans" (full review HERE) in 1999. Most recently, there was DID 1/6 scale 12-inch Ultimate Edition World War II Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger (German Air Force Paratrooper) "Dirk Kluge" from Victory to Defeat 1942-1945 (previewed HERE) and now Toys City has announced that they too will be releasing Stefan Hofmann, a 1:6 scale Fallschirmjäger Oberst (Ardennes, 1944)

Talk is that this head sculpt resembles British actor, Ray Stevenson who was most recently Frank Castle aka The Punisher in "Punisher: War Zone (2008)".

Interestingly, he has a rope burn scar on his neck like that of Lieutenant Aldo Raine, "Aldo the Apache" from the 2009 war film "Inglourious Basterds" written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt as Aldo. Hot Toys will be releasing a 1:6 scale Lieutenant Aldo Raine pretty soon (preview pictures of the prototype HERE)

It looks like they started to do an Aldo Raine sculpt, but someone said it looked like Ray Stevenson so the sculptor switched gears mid-sculpt and took it the other direction. It resembles both but looks like neither. Pretty funny ;D

Toys City Fallschirmjäger Oberst, Ardennen 1944 will come with: Realistic headsculpt, T2.0B body, Brown gloved hands. His Gear: Luftwaffe peaked cap, Fallschirmjäger Oberst (FJ officer) uniform, Luftwaffe-Sumpfuster "Field Div. Smock", FJ trousers, Officer's leather belt, Brown P-38 holster leader, German FJ boots (side-laced), M38 helmet, Telescope, Goggles, Six-pocket MP40 ammunition pouch. Weapons: FG42II assault rifle, MP40 submachine gun, Walther P-38. Insignia: Paratrooper Badge, WWII German 1939 Iron Cross First Class Medal, Silver German Close Combat War Badge

Embroidered Major collar-rank and chest eagles

German FJ smock with the 'pocket' was for holding the flare pistol (not included). Carrier for the MP40 submachine gun.

Nicely painted 2nd model FG42 assault rifle

1:6 WWII German Pleather side-laced jump boots

There are enough new stuff produced for this set to justify getting it, at least not re-hashed stuff thrown together.
