Extraterrestrial Survival Guide to Predators, Xenomorphs, Killer Klowns, Blob, Martians, etc

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. The universe's most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biologist can prevent the end of the human race.

The Predator is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by Shane Black and written by Black and Fred Dekker. It is the fourth installment in the Predator film series (the sixth counting the two Alien vs. Predator films), following Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010). It opened this week in Singapore.

Due to the popularity of films on extraterrestrials, the local newspaper decided to publish an Extraterrestrial Survival Guide to all sorts of alien creatures that have graced the big screen, starting with the Predators since the new film opened this week.

Black Panther film inspires celebration of all things Africa with its avant-garde costumes inspired by real-life tribes

As Marvel's latest film Black Panther continues to blow box-office predictions out of the water (see previous toy blog post "‘Black Panther’ Becomes Highest-Grossing MCU Film in First Week!" HERE), the film has also been instrumental in bringing African culture to the fore.

Starring Chadwick Boseman and a stellar cast that includes Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Angela Bassett, the superhero film is an Afrofuturistic vision - where science fiction and fantasy are infused with cultures of the African diaspora.

While the setting of Wakanda is a fictional country, it draws on plenty of real-life influences from African cultures around the continent, from the ritual scarring on Erik Killmonger's ripped body, which originates from tribes in Ethiopia; to the Zulu headdresses predominantly worn in South Africa, seen on Queen Mother Ramonda.

Haul for Christmas 2017: Scarlett Johansson as Major, Netflix Daredevil and The Last Jedi book

Here's wishing everyone who's reading this a very Merry Christmas and glad tidings of great joy :)

Here's my haul for December 2017, just in time for the Christmas holidays. They include Cat Toys CT-006 1/6th scale Female Character set (essentially Scarlett Johansson as Major Mira Killian / Motoko Kusanagi from the 2017 American science fiction action film Ghost in the Shell based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow), Hot Toys Television Masterpiece Series TMS003 Netflix Marvel's Daredevil portrayed by Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi visual dictionary by DK (Dorling Kindersley) Publishing.

In 2017, we finally got to see a live action film of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell manga which was first serialized in 1989 and then animated in 1995. The film had its many critics but for me to be able to see the Major and Section 9 being acted out on the big screen is a dream come true. It was certainly a visual treat and the special effects were not a disappointment. Netflix Marvel's Daredevil web television series was highly successful and led the way for more Marvel superhero characters to debut on television. Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock / Daredevil plays a blind lawyer-by-day who fights crime at night. All episodes of the first season were released on Netflix on April 10, 2015, while the second season was released in its entirety on March 18, 2016. They were met with positive reviews. In July 2016, the series was renewed for a third season; filming for the season began in November 2017, and it is intended to release in 2018.

The Evolution of Spider-Man's Costume over 55 years (1962 - 2017) by HalloweenCostumes.com

Spider-Man has worn many different costumes over the years that he has been appearing in the comic books published by Marvel and the films he has starred in, all the way from his origins in 1962 to 2017 where he makes his most recent foray. There are a wide variety of one-off outfits which distracts from the slightly more subtle changes the web slinger's costume has gone through.

HalloweenCostumes.com has compiled this rather comprehensive infographic which shows the different Spider-Man costumes Peter Parker has worn over the years, including the film versions.

Comparison Pictures of Marvel Movie Super heroes and Villains vs Marvel Comics Characters

I came across these images on the internet comparing Marvel Movie Superheroes and Villains with their Marvel Comics Characters. If you were to tell me back in the 1970s that the comic books I was reading and the characters in them would be played out on the big screen in such a major way, I wouldn't have believed you. Now these characters have become quite a big part in our world of entertainment, raking in all that money for the movie studios. And we are just so eager to see all of them on the movie screens.

The costume is a Superhero's most defining characteristic and once published is usually stuck with the character for a very long time although they do get the occasional makeover and redesign. I really like how the costume designers in the movie universe create the costumes for the screen versions of the comic book characters. While trying to stay faithful to the original costumes because that's how we identify the characters by their costumes, the movie costume designers must make the actors look more real world than in the comic books where bright colors were added to attract readers. Plus the costumes have to be adapted to look like they belong in the world that we live. Gone are the days when there were bright red and blue costumes like those worn by Superman or Spider-Man, not to mention the campy look and style of the 1960s Batman and Robin. Check out the costume comparison pics below.

Let's start with Hawkeye (Clint Barton). Hawkeye is portrayed by Jeremy Renner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hawkeye may be a superhero but he is totally human without any super powers, just like his compatriot Black Widow (Natasha Romanova), portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in the films Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Captain America: Civil War (2016) as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.

DC Superheroes by ToyHaven ᕙ(`▽´)ᕗ

Here's another look at the artwork designed by yours truly for my new place, ToyHaven 3 (shown earlier in my toy blog post HERE). This would go in line with the theme of the house having so many toys, figures and collectibles. I have always wanted to do a comparison of the similar superhero characters from the different universes and this was one of the best platforms to do it on :) click on the pic for a bigger and better view.

The Evolution of Off-Duty Superhero Fashion featuring Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Tony Stark...

All credit to Sunglass Warehouse for this infographic (also related to previous toy blog post)

We don’t usually think of what we wear each day as a costume, but that’s precisely what they are. Those suits we wear every day to the office, or the color coordinated and logo emblazoned shirts we wear to the shop are really costumes – a particular style of dress for an occasion.

Nothing’s more natural to a superhero than to be suited up and in action. It’s when the hero is off hours, trying to blend into the crowd that the real costume is put on. Superman is a prime example of this. Unlike most other superheroes, Superman was not transformed into what he is. He was born that way, and Clark Kent is his alter ego – his costume to blend in with the crowd.

As the decades have passed superheroes still need to stay disguised, but we thought it would be interesting to look at how their off-the-clock outfits have changed from the 70s and 80s. Tony Stark has updated his suits to look more modern and thankfully has gotten rid of his permed mullet. We did find some more stubborn superheroes like Wolverine and Captain America who look slightly dated, but maybe it’s a lower priority when ageing is less of a concern. Bruce Banner, Peter Parker and Tony Stark are featured as well :)

How much would Darth Vader's suit cost?

continued from previous toy blog post...

Darth Vader is arguably the most memorable character from the Star Wars universe, and his suit is one of the most iconic costumes in film history. But how much would that suit cost in real life?

Produced by Shade Station with information gleaned from a variety of sources, this Darth Vader infographic attempts to list the cost of the prosthetic legs and left arm as well as their maintenance plus heart and lung machine built into the suit to aid him in breathing. Darth Vader's helmet would have augmented reality functionality, similar to that of the mounted display of the F-35's helmet, giving him night vision capability as well as navigational capability and advanced targeting. As Imperial space fighter cockpits are nor pressurised, Vader's suit must be airtight and be able to withstand exposure to space. The base suit then would need to be similar to a NASA space suit, which makes him an astronaut as well.

The evolution of Wonder Woman over 75 years from 1941 - 2016: Diana Prince doesn't age at all

After seeing Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman in the most recent Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film, I am certainly eager to see her in her own movie on the big screen (Finally! after all these years). In the meantime, there have been quite a bit of attention going her way even though she only appeared very briefly in the Batman v Superman film. Due to this renewed interest in Wonder Woman, HalloweenCostumes.com has created this nice infographic detailing the evolution of Wonder Woman over 75 years from 1941 - 2016.

The evolution of Wonder Woman from 1941 - 2016. Everyone knows what Wonder Woman looks like. Her costume is instantly recognizable. So much so, in fact, that few actually realize how many times it has changed over the years. This is a summary of every costume Diana Prince has worn as Wonder Woman in the comics and in wider culture (excluding alternate universes and cancelled projects). This infographic by HalloweenCostumes.com gives all the details with source materials from The Art Of Brian Bolland, CBR, DC Comics, Klein Letters, Newsarama, Purse Pundit, The Secret History Of Wonder Woman.

Review: DK Star Wars The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary is GREAT & provides answers

Spoiler Alert! Do not read on if you haven't seen the latest Star Wars The Force Awakens. But if you have already seen the film at least once and want to know more, this Dorling Kindersley (DK) Star Wars The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary is a good resource for some unanswered questions you might have. Plus you get to see more of the details that went into the making of the film. The complete guide to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this visual dictionary reveals all of the characters, creatures, droids, locations and technology.

I enjoyed watching the film and it was quite nostalgic to see Star Wars again on the big screen. It will never be able to repeat the jaw dropping eye popping effect it had on me when I first watched it on the big screen in 1977 but having the familiar faces and characters showing up on the big screen again after so long alongside new and fresh faces who will bring the franchise to a whole new generation and continue the saga that started back in 1977 is certainly well worth the wait. After the movie was over, there were some questions I wanted to ask but no one could give me the answers until I saw this Dorling Kindersley (DK) Star Wars The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary on a rack last Saturday. I already own four of the previous releases by DK so picking this up was a no brainer. This book covers most of the characters seen in the newest Star Wars film and a lot of what we see in a fleeting moment on screen is captured here for us to enjoy once more, especially all the weird and wonderful aliens and creatures that make up the Star Wars universe. Truly a visual treat and feast for the eyes!

DC Heroes Height Comparison by costumecollection.com.au

Pictures / illustration (Infographic) and text courtesy of costumecollection.com.au

Marvel characters have been sized up before but there hasn’t been any way to compare the heights of our favourite DC Comics superheroes. Until now.

By thoroughly researching the DC Wikia database and other sources, we’ve been able to accurately compare 21 different superheros on an infographic hand-drawn in the classic comic book style. And yes, Superman IS taller than Batman. By one inch.

With the upcoming release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Justice League, you can get even more of an insight into the true physicality of these DC Comics superheroes. Some of them might surprise you!

Robin, for instance, is only 4’6” and still in his teens. Our representation of Robin is the latest revision of the character and Bruce Wayne’s biological son, Damian. The first Robin, Dick Grayson, eventually becomes the vigilante superhero Nightwing after outgrowing his status as Batman’s side-kick.

Star Wars Costume Evolution: Stormtroopers

Thanks to Halloween Costumes, we have a fun Star Wars infographic that offers us a look at the evolution of the Stormtroopers costume design. Over the years we've seen several different designs for them, and here they all are conveniently placed for you to look at and perhaps learn a few things you might not have known about them.

Here's the note that came along with the infographic:
When George Lucas conceived of Star Wars, he created an industry -- costumes and animatronics, special effects and digital sound, you name it! Many of the things we take for granted in movies today exists because of Lucas, LucasArts, Skywalker Sound, and Industrial Light & Magic.

Nobody does iconic looks like George Lucas and his creative team, and next to Darth Vader himself, the Stormtroopers have some of the most noticeable and recognizable costumes in the Star Wars universe. While the Stormtrooper and clone trooper armors haven't changed much in their look since the Clone Wars, their helmets have undergone the most drastic changes and had the most amazing variations throughout their use. From the onset of the Clone Wars to 2015's Episode VII: The Force Awakens, check out how the Stormtrooper costume has changed in it's nearly 50-year history!

The Must-Have Toys of the past 25 Years

With less than a week until Christmas, you can be assured that the malls will be packed with procrastinating parents searching for that must-have toy for their kids. Will they grab the last Snow Glo Elsa before she’s officially Ebay only? If this graphic of the past 25 years of must-have toys tells us anything, it’s that instant popularity doesn’t always dictate long-term fandom. While some still pine for TMNT and Pokemon collectables, toys like Easy Bake Oven and Talkboy are probably best left in the past. Created by personalized gifting company Personal Creations—did you make a wish to Santa for any of these childhood toys?

70 years of Batman Evolution: 1939 Batman up to 2012 The Dark Knight - $2.6 billion made

Here's another Batman Evolution chart I came across and this one covers the iconic superhero through the years and the money Batman films have made, grossing over $2.6 billion worldwide.

Batman first appeared in the pages of Detective Comics #27 which was sold for 10 cents. By the 1940s, Batman was a big player in comics and Alfred Pennyworth, The Batsignal, The Batmobile and the Batcave were introduced, as were villains like Dr Hugo Strange and The Joker.

In the 1950s, Batman gradually becomes more science fiction oriented as he fought aliens from outer space. This era showed a more 'sunnier' Batman during the postwar years to reflect the golden age of the 50s. Accusations of Batman being gay rose at this time, and rumored Batman and Robin as romantic lovers LOL.
