- Moon Craters
- Give the kids a circle cutout to represent the moon (yellow or grey/white).
- Show the kids a book or photos of the moon & point out the craters.
- Lead the kids to notice that their moons do not have craters.
- Glue on several cheerio craters to their moon! They could use the craters to form the first letter of their name or the letter M on their moon.
- Hey Diddle Diddle
- Learn the rhyme "Hey diddle, diddle, the cat & the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed to see such sport & the dish ran away with the spoon"
- Use stick puppets to recite the rhyme. I’ve had a hard time finding “Hey Diddle Diddle” clipart to use for stick puppets. I would check resource books at the library for good reproducibles.
- Make a moon mobile for Hey Diddle Diddle (using the page above).
- Go outside on a clear night and find the moon. If possible, check the moon for several nights and see the shape change.
- Read Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.
- Re-read the story one more time with a collection of clipart from the book on the table (you can use the clipart below or choose your own!)
- As you read, let your preschooler pick out the picture that matches the story.
Snack Ideas:
- Moon Cakes …
- Cut 2 slices of white bread into circles.
- Spread one slice with peanut butter and one slice with jelly. Sandwich together and eat!
- Moon Rockets …
- Peel and cut a banana in half.
- Press 2-3 chocolate chips (windows) point first into the banana near the top, one on top of the other.
- Place a spoonful of whipped cream on a plate.
- Stand the rocket banana upright in the fluffy smoke, cut side down.
- Cut a strawberry Newton in half diagonally and place both on either side of the banana rocket for the wings.
