Preschool storage and organization

I have been adding to my preschool stash since I started in about 2012. To get me started, Lindsy, the creator of Preschool Alphabet blog and my sister, sent me a photo box and a 2” binder, both full of preschool things I could do with my oldest son, then 2 years old.

She got me hooked and started in the right direction. Now I have drawers and tubs and binders and bookshelves FULL of preschool things, as I now have four kids, two of which are still at home doing preschool with me!

So what do I do with all this stuff?

  • BINDERS
I have since expanded from the one 2” binder I started with into six 2" binders, and can see myself adding more!

SET UP:
    • Dividers for each binder, labeled with a letter of the alphabet
    • After each divider, add sheet protectors for each specific theme for that letter.
*In the sheet protectors I put:
      • laminated or reusable papers
      • Extra copies of printed papers
      • Magazine articles or pictures
      • Extra materials for activities
      • Stickers
      • essentially anything flat that will fit!
    • Label the outside of each binder with the letters/holidays it includes!

  • DRAWERS
I upgraded from the one photo box my sister gave me in the beginning to a few sets of plastic drawers (the kind you find on sale during back-to-school). I use these to store small but still bulkier items that wont fit in a binder.

SET UP:
  • Dividers for each drawer. Nothing fancy here, I use pieces of cardboard with the letters written on them.
  • After each divider, put items like small toys, craft items, or dollar store finds that you use for each theme of that letter.

I have a separate set of drawers just for Holiday and party themes as well.

  • PLASTIC TUBS/BINS
Lots of sizes of plastic tubs!

  • Small Tubs:
    • I use their smaller tubs, about 6 quart, to store crayons, glue, markers, scissors, dot stampers, etc. We pull these out almost daily and it’s easy for set up and clean up.
    • I also use these small bins for sensory play. Fill it 1/4 way with rice, beans, wheat, oatmeal, or sand. Then add themed items, spoons, cars, etc to play with in the bins.
  • Large Tubs:

  • BOOKSHELF
I feel like this one is pretty self explanatory.
  • You need a bookshelf for your binders and for all the fun preschool books you have or borrow from the library!
  • It also helps to put the smaller tubs in one spot on a shelf so the kids can help set up and clean up preschool too!
  • Store other items you use to aid with preschool:

**I have a video of my set up on Instagram (under my story highlights, titled "Get Organized")

What do you do for your preschool storage and organization at home?

Make a Family Post Office

DSC04689 DSC04693blur

We don’t live very close to anyone in our family. We get to see grandmas and grandpas and cousins every now and then, but not nearly enough. My 3-year-old loves writing letters and drawing pictures. She is always asking for an envelope and a stamp so she can send her picture to Grandma or an uncle or cousin.

So, I decided to put together a Family Post Office. It was simple to do and I love that the kids can see their cousins and grandparents and send them letters more easily now! Here’s how we did it…

DSC04689

1. Print a Cover

  • I found a 1” binder we already had and printed out a cover and side thingy Smile
  • I love free printables, so if you’d like to use the same cover and spine label, just click HERE to download!
DSC04691

2. Add a pencil pouch

  • Snap a pencil pouch right inside the front cover.
  • Put big and little envelopes in the pouch.
  • Add several different stamps.

3. Add paper and cards!

  • Fill the left front pocket with blank paper and some different blank cards the kids can pick from.

DSC04692blur DSC04693blur

4. Address Pages

  • Find a picture of each family/person in our family.
  • Add their address on the right side (mine are blurred out, but they’re there!)
  • NOTE: I love that if the address changes, I can update and just print out that one page.
  • Put the pages in plastic page protectors.
DSC04694blur

5. Back Cover

  • On the back cover, I taped an envelope with a “How-To” address the front and where to put the stamp.
  • There’s a little sticky note pad at the bottom … sometimes my 3 or 5-year-old will tell me what they want to say and I’ll write it out for them so they can copy it.

DSC04695

7. That’s it! … For now, it sits on the counter by our tin bucket filled with pencils, little scissors and a stapler. My kids know they can use these anytime they want to. They are quite the little creators.

DSC04642blur

8. Mail your letters!

  • The last thing my kids do after they address the envelope and put a stamp on is to run it out to the mailbox and put the flag up.
  • So exciting! Especially when the mailman brings a letter back to them!

Displaying the Alphabet & Preschool Journals

Since my oldest preschooler will be five in November and this will be my third year doing preschool with him, I wanted to change things up a bit this year. This is what we’ve done for the past several years … and it’s been GREAT!

DSC02555

I wanted a more colorful alphabet strip that didn’t take up so much wall space and I wanted to do our weekly alphabet letters a little differently. So, this is what we are doing this year!

DSC00623DSC00626

This kids love the change and I love how simple and colorful it is. I had been looking for a colorful and simple set of ABC flashcards … and found these at the dollar store of all places.

    1. I just hung two pieces of yarn. One is a little longer and the other is shorter and hung just behind the first.
    2. Then simply clip each letter on with clothespins.
    3. TIP: I did have a little discussion with my boys that the letters are not targets for balls or dart guns. Then again, playing ABC dart practice might be a fun thing to do one of these weeks Smile

DSC00675DSC00676DSC00738

Preschool Journals … we are trying this out this year. So far, so good!

    1. I gave each of my kids their own composition book.
    2. Decorate the front! Just glue blank cardstock to the front and back and let the kids personalize their journals with crayons, markers and stickers.
    3. Each day they grab their preschool box and journal.
    4. We sing our songs, say a prayer, read our book, then open our journals.
      • the kids write their name
      • we practice writing our letter for that week – upper and lowercase
      • copy our theme (animal, ant, apple) from a book we’ve read
      • draw a picture and/or put stickers on the page.
    5. My goals are:
      • letter writing practice
      • an organized & compact way to keep track of our preschool days

So far I’m really pleased. The kids love their journals and enjoy doing their page each day. I love that we can see everything we’ve done, but then can close the book and put them away. Oh … and none of the ABCs have been used for target practice yet Smile

Gearing Up for Preschool 2012! (Checklist)

We have a week and a half of summer left and are going to enjoy every minute of it, but I’m already gearing up for another year of preschool with my kids at home! I’ll be changing things up a little this year because my oldest preschooler will be five soon and he’s ready for more.

While I get things organized, I thought I’d share my checklist to get ready!

  • Place Amazon Order … I just placed an order on Amazon for some fun preschool products I’m excited to use this year. I usually order any other books or stickers or things (like the plastic ants) that we’ll need for the coming weeks.

DSC00276

  • Put together preschool boxes … the kids love starting the year with their own box of preschool supplies. I just get them each their own school box labeled with their name and include:
    1. washable markers
    2. scissors
    3. a glue stick
    4. box of crayons
    5. a pencil or two.
    6. and I usually throw in a surprise treat for the first day.
    7. tIP: There are GREAT sales on school supplies right now! I stock up on crayons, paper, glue sticks and washable markers (trust me, just get the washable kind, even though they’re a little more expensive!)

September

  • Decide on the themes I want each day for A week.
    1. If you need a schedule ready to go, my calendar for A-D (September) last year is here. Calendars for the rest of the year are listed on my sidebar.
    2. Links to all letter ideas here. I stick with one letter each week and one theme each day. Then I try to mix up the activities so we are reading every day and playing, writing, exploring and learning a lot!

DSC00278

  • Go to the library … seriously, one of my favorite places. We are now well-stocked with letter A books Smile Then read, read, read them! By the time A week comes, we’re ready to learn with some of our new favorite books.
  • Put up an alphabet strip … I’m trying to decide where and how I want to put it up this year, but it will be up soon to get the kids excited.

preschoolbook1preschoolbook7.jp

  • Organize preschool activity boxes … this is a whole post itself and I’m still getting my boxes together. I’ll post the details soon.

I try to keep it simple, but organized and fun Smile I’d love to hear how you are getting organized and ready to start a new preschool year!

Preschool Plan for May

We’re down to Y and Z!

Summer fun and more outside time must be on it’s way. May’s calendar is looking a little bare. We have found so many new favorite books this year. That is my favorite part about preschool. I love seeing my kids enjoy good books. Just tonight, my 2-year-old sat down and “read” Little Pea to me almost word for word because she has asked us to read it to her so many times. I love it!

I’m excited for our End of the Alphabet party and can’t wait for the long, lazy days of summer (What am I talking about? My first grader still has two months of school left!)

Preschool Plan for April

We welcomed Spring with a huge snow storm this week. School was canceled for two days and now we’re heading out of town for Spring Break!

Here is our plan for April when we get home! Lots of Easter and Earth Day activities along with letters W and X! You can find more details for each day’s activities by clicking on the ABC Themes tab in the sidebar. Several of these are new for us, so they will be posted in the next couple of weeks.

We also have an Easter tradition starting 8 days before Easter Sunday. So we will be starting that on March 31! Check it out here.

Preschool Plan for March

Whew! Here is our preschool plan for March!

There are several new activities for us this month so I’m excited. The end of the alphabet gets a little tricky … U, V, W, X, Y, Z … not the easiest letters to find a theme for, but we have some fun days planned.

You can find more details for any of the daily activities, by clicking the “ABC Themes” button on the sidebar. If a theme you’re looking for is not listed right now, it’s because it is brand new for us, but I’ll be posting one each day until they’re all there and ready to go!

The last week of March (26-30) is our Spring Break, so we won’t have preschool that week. We’ll start back up again with W in April!

Please let me know if you have any troubles getting these calendars to print. I changed from Scribd to Google Docs so hopefully they’ll download a little easier.

And thank you so much for all of your kind comments and emails. I love getting them! If I don’t get back to you right away, just know that I’m probably changing diapers, making lunches or wiping sticky fingers … sound familiar to anyone?! Smile

Have a great March!

Preschool Plan for February

We’re all set and ready for the next month … finally! I had so much fun getting our calendar ready for February. We will probably spend two days doing Groundhog’s Day activities and take our time doing lots of hearts and Valentine’s Day activities. I decided to just take the last two weeks to do S activities because there are so many fun ones I didn’t want to leave out. Enjoy!

Preschool Plan for December

December snuck up on me! I can’t believe it’s already here next week! Here is our plan for preschool for December. We’ll work on letters K, L and M. There are so many fun M activities, I extended it into the next week too. I tried to make those Christmasy M days too (Mortimer’s Christmas, marshmallow snowmen and M&M cookies).

The rest of the week up until Christmas will be full of Christmas activities. I will start the Christmas Around the World Advent activities with my kids on December 1st and try to do one each day (if you missed it, see the post here).

We will take the last week of Christmas “off” and instead play with grandparents, cousins and hopefully have lots of time to play in the snow and make hot chocolate.

If you download this preschool plan, I’d love it if you’d leave a comment letting me know! I’m hoping they’re helpful to somebody Smile

Preschool Plan for November

This is my preschool plan for the month of November!

To be very honest, if I didn’t have this blog, I would probably start getting lazy with preschool right now. There are so many things going on. So to have this plan ready to go and up on the wall will keep me on track … and keep my little preschoolers happy!

I’m hoping to collect several new Thanksgiving activities and ideas this month. I’ll try to post them as we go along. I’d love to see what you’re doing!! If you have activities you’d like to share, please leave a link in the comments.

The whole week of Thanksgiving we’ll be doing Thanksgiving activities, enjoying the break from school (my first grader), baking and just relaxing at home. I’m planning to run a 5K on Thanksgiving morning and also this virtual 5K on Halloween (such a fun idea and prizes too!) We always hunt for mistletoe on Thanksgiving, watch the Macy’s parade and of course, lots of football.

    1. Click on the calendar below.
    2. Click on the “Print” icon (top left)

You can also find each month over in the right sidebar. Feel free to email with any questions or great ideas you’d like to share! Have a great November!
