Saturday StepXStep

Hi all, Linda back again this week with another Saturday StepXStep and wishing all  my American friends a happy Memorial Day.  I wanted to so something patriotic for this important holiday so I pulled out my Artistic Outpost Hero set.  I was going to use the soldier image but started looking at the collage stamp with Rosie the Riveter on it and decided to go in a more feminine direction.  While she might not have been an enlisted person, the "Rosies" of the WWII era made an important contribution to the war effort and I thought it would be great to recognize that this Memorial Day.
I started thinking about how I could bring in some red and white strips to signify our American flag and decided to stay with the feminine feel by making my stripes a flower.  I cut three flowers out of crinoline with my Tattered Florals die and dyed them with Barn Door distress stain.  If I am dying a large batch of crinoline flowers, I usually make up a dye batch with reinkers, but to dye just a couple of flower layers, pulling out the distress stain is quick and easy.    I dried my flower layers with my heat tool.
The left over ink also got dried with my heat tool so I misted it to rehydrate the ink and then blotted my tag into it.  I dried the first layer and blotted it again.  I ended up doing that three times to create the base layer of my tag.
I wanted the flag stamp on the tag but was in a frame and had other images and a sentiment that I didn't want, so I masked off those areas with masking tape before I inked up my stamp.
The stamp was inked with cobalt archival ink.
The tape was peeled off before stamping.
Stars were added using the Tim Holtz Stars Layering Stencil and white Wendy Vecchi embossing paste. I applied the embossing paste with my finger - I find it gives me much better control over where the paste is applied than using a palette knife.
I added a bit of bling by applying distress glitter directly to the wet embossing paste.
Carrying on with the flag look, I cut banners from red kraft core and white card stock.  The HERO was stamped in Cobalt archival, snipped apart and the edges were inked with Vintage  Photo.  I wanted some sort of blue panel to mount my stars on so I cut a Tattered Banner from blue kraft core, sanded and inked it before adhering the stars with Multi Medium Matte.
To continue with the feminine theme, I gave Rosie a topper cut with the Vintage Lace die and a pretty red crinkle ribbon bow held on with a Gem Clip and topped with another Mirrored Star.
The tag was finished off with a red and white crinoline flower, topped with a white distress glittered star and a blue star button.
Thanks for hanging in with me for this StepXStep.  I wish you all a wonderful weekend wherever you are and a happy and safe holiday weekend to my American friends!

Friday Focus - Crinoline & Venise Lace

Cec here and today it my turn to do the Friday Focus segment and Linda has asked me feature Crinoline and Venise Lace.  Now I often make flowers using the crinoline but I really wanted to think outside the box on this one so I came up with a wedding keepsake for a bride.  By the way, this project was already underway before Linda posted her dress form tag last month so I didn't use her idea but it sure shows that great minds think alike.

I started with a 12" x 12" piece of chipboard that was packaged around a paper order and gave it a couple of coats of gesso.

Next I laid down a stencil from Dyan Reaveley and used some embossing paste to emboss the dots on two opposite corners.

Once the embossing paste was dry, I pounced some Butter Pecan acrylic paint on with a dry baby wipe giving the canvas almost a stone look. The best thing about this technique is that it hides a multitude of sins - not that I am admitting there were any :)

Next I started to make a wedding dress.  I made myself a paper pattern first and then used it to cut a dress from crinoline.  Crinoline is like a woven interfacing used in sewing.  I finished all the edges by turning under a 1/4" hem using double sided tape.  You can see in the photo where I had to clip on an inside curve.  I cut a lining out of an old sheet and added that to the back and made a mannequin out of card stock to mount it on.

Then I started to embellish it.  First I added a tulle skirt and then a band of venise lace below the waist making what I think they call a fit and flare gown.  I took a venise heart and cut the centre out because I thought it would make a nice sweetheart neckline and bodice.  I will use the part I cut away under some ribbon sometime. Then I added pearls to the centre of each of the flowers on the bodice and the waist and dotted the tulle with pearls.

Next I made some crinoline flowers cutting three sizes from the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die and dying them with some Tattered Rose Distress Stain and Antique Linen Distress Ink that I puddled on my craft sheet and diluted with some water.  After they were dry, and scrunched up a bit, I layered them and added some pearls to the centre.

I also made some white crinoline flowers and added some tiny roses to the centre that had a bit of glitter added around the petals.

Then I started to put the canvas together.  First I used my Cameo to cut a big doily from some shimmery card stock and mounted that on the canvas.

Next I tore a piece of Tim Holtz Tissue Wrap and painted the back with some Matte Multi Medium.  Once it was mounted on top of the doily, I added more of the medium to seal it.

The wedding dress came next and then I added my crinoline flowers along with some paper flowers on either side.  I also added some pearl sprays and a big pearl stick pin.

Once I added some pearls to the body of this lovely venise lace butterfly, I added it to the canvas.

Next I created the sentiment on my computer, cut it out with a Spellbinders die and then mounted it on top some more gorgeous venise lace before adding it to the canvas.

Here is the finished project just waiting for the right frame.  I hope you will run right over to The Funkie Junkie Boutique and pick up some crinoline and some venise lace appliques and trims and create something gorgeous.

Friday Focus - Crinoline

Please note:  since The Funkie Junkie Boutique is temporarily closed, the Friday Focus products will not be offered at 15% off.

Hi, thank goodness it's Friday!  It's a really good day today as I've also taken a day's holiday to do some much needed crafting! It's Sue here and today's Friday Focus is all about Crinoline. I absolutely love this fabric, it is so versatile whether you are die cutting, stamping or painting.

I recently bought the Tim Holtz snowflake die and thought it would look great made from Crinoline!

I just used one thickness of the fabric which cut really well.

I then folded it as you would if you'd cut it from paper or card and then took a needle and thread and ran the needle through all of the folds.

The snowflake starts to gather as you pull the thread tight.

Once you reach the end sew the two ends together to complete the base of the snowflake and then I stuck the centre panel with some silicone glue.

Another thing I love to do is stamp onto Crinoline.

I've used Coffee Archival ink and this piece was intended for a background layer so I've used a large stamp.

To be sure the ink has set always heat set it (apologies for the shadow of my heat gun!). This makes sure that if you wanted to paint it as well the ink won't bleed.

Here's how I used the snowflake, I just added a shrink plastic snowflake and a bead  to it.

The background piece, I've used on this birthday card for my niece, it adds a different dimension to your projects.

I hope you've enjoyed today's Friday Focus and you all find some time to craft this weekend!
