For those who may not know, my boyfriend Nick is an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist. He'll be the first to admit that he had no social life in high school because he was playing guitar all the time, but that time has paid off into an incredible talent he's been able to hone and perfect. He has taken numerous students under his wing in guitar and continues to teach today, which has become a very fulfilling path.
Currently, Nick has a few private students who come to the apartment studio, but does most of his teaching out of the Music Education Centre (MEC) at Long & McQuade Musical Instruments in Brampton, which has a Jam Band Program for its younger students. Teachers are matched up with a group of students and learn how to flesh out songs together, whether they're originals or their radio favourites. Tracks Pub, where the MEC hosts a Wednesday Night Jam every week, welcomed students, parents, teachers and music fans alike to enjoy an afternoon of live music. Nick's band, whos drummer was a no-show, consisted of Stephanie and Tracy on guitar, Kyle on bass and Nick on drums. Perfoming a Rush medley of Working Man and Bastille Day, In My Life by the Beatles, and a blues and latin jam, they brought the house down, demanding an encore with You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC. Check out the pictures!
Congrats on a great performance!

You're Never Too Old For A Costume!
We had a great time today at Long & McQuade Brampton for Halloween! We were already in the spirit with our window display, so a bunch of us decided to dress up for an exciting work day on Saturday, with some pretty fantastic results! See what me and my workmates were up to!
Here's Shayna's tribute to Sailor Moon!
Will rotated costumes from Rorschach from The Watchmen ...

Happy Halloween from Long & McQuade!
This display has to be one of our favourites by far. I'm looking forward to Halloween (being it on a Saturday!) when the wee ones come in with their cute costumes! I have my Indiana Jones costume all set, just looking for the right things to add into my messenger bag ...
Off to work!

Long & McQuade Field Trip: Cosmic Bowling!
I love where I work; not just because Long & McQuade is a great place to work, it's the people I work with. We consider ourselves like a great big family, and treat each other the same way.
So, picture your family with about 15 or so big brothers, all musicians. Yep. That's my 'family'! And I couldn't ask for a better one. It helps that we all like each other, which makes coming to work that much more fun.
We just came from a recently planned social event, an evening of pizza, beer and Cosmic Bowling! It also just happens to be the day before my birthday! (Of course, wanting to keep this a low-key birthday, I was glad there wasn't a lot of attention brought to it, just a couple of 'Happy Birthday, Cassman!') We had a great time, and a lot of 'goofballs' and 'gutterballs' toboot. Nick won the game on our team, and was primarily behind the lens taking these great pictures. I'm sorry I didn't get any of you in action, honey!

My bowling shoes, burgundy and pink. Oh, the inspirations!
Nick's enjoying the space-age swivel chairs.
Jenna has joined us after her climb up the CN Tower for cancer research! She was just a cheerleader for the evening.

Wordless Wednesday, Issue #7: "And What Do You Do?"
What was that thing that President Obama said about putting lipstick on a pig? It's like putting a musician in a suit and tie.
These are some of the awesome people I work with at Long & McQuade Musical Instruments.

Three Cheers for Glory St. Germain!
I received an email from Glory last week or so, saying that she had ordered me a 'guitar hoodie', and would like my mailing address. You may remember this lady's shining face from the Ultimate Music Theory & Full Voice Workshop at Long & McQuade Brampton, and our visit at the MIAC/PAL 2009 trade show.
Well, to my surprise, look what arrived in the mail today, and I wore proudly to work!
We dress the professional bunch here at Long & McQuade Musical Instruments, with our shirts tucked in and ties presentable ... well, the guys, at least ... sometimes I wear a tie when I feel like it ... anyway, you know, we're professional salespeople and treat it as such. It can also be pretty physical, running around the store, lifting heavy and large instrument cases, so wearing something like this wildly awesome and my new favourite hooded zip-up sweater to end all sweaters! would be absolutely appropriate, instead of the occasional constricting jacket or blazer.
Well, to my surprise, look what arrived in the mail today, and I wore proudly to work!
I guess you've figured out that I absolutely love this guitar hoodie, and will be wearing it faithfully to work, well, every day! Perfect fit and will be a very stylish layer in the chilly winter when they leave the Rental Dept. door open!
Thank you so much, Glory! What a generous gift from a shining star! Look in your mailbox - because I have your mailing address, too!

September Make n' Tell Challenge, Day #7: The Twitter Signs Are Finished!
Whew! Made it for the September Make n' Tell Challenge!
I hope everyone had a great Labour Day weekend! Most of it was suffering through a migraine, and was lucky that it subsided for our trip to the Canadian National Exhibition. I managed to snag some goodies from the Arts & Crafts Building that I'll be showing off soon. I'm returning to work tomorrow, so I wanted to make sure I had finished the Twitter signs for Long & McQuade Brampton to bring in tomorrow. So I hunkered over as soon as I got home and got to work. Yee-haw! They're done!

September Make n' Tell Challenge, Day #3: Brent & His Guitar
Welcome to September Make n' Tell Challenge: Day #3!
This day's Make n' Tell continues with the music theme. I am a musician, because playing, listening, making and living music is what I love to do. I do have a job selling musical instruments during the week, which I love, because I get a chance to help feed people's desire to express themselves through music. I develop a comraderie with them when I help them choose their instruments, recommend books and music to learn, or introduce them to some of our teachers who work at our lesson centre. It's also like a someone who loves cars working in an custom builders; sometimes the really 'sweet rides' come in that are really drool-worthy.
So, on that note, let me re-introduce you to my friend Brent Lindsey, our trusty guitar technician at Long & McQuade Brampton and his favourite - and sexiest - Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar in a white finish with all-gold hardware. You'll remember Brent from his guitar antics in our Led Zeppelin tribute performance with his six guitars and acoustic magic. This guitar is an incredibly stunning instrument, and I was lucky enough to have my camera with me today when he brought it to work to add some final touches.
I took a lot of angular shots of the guitar and took advantage of the pot lights for lighting. I had then duplicated them and played with some effects to change them to black and white photos, or different colour tints. The first picture you see from the pair is the unedited original.

September Make n' Tell Challenge, Day #1: Twitter Signs for Long & McQuade Brampton
Welcome to the first day of the September Make n' Tell Challenge!
I'm appreciative of my "day job" at Long & McQuade, because my managers allow me to set my creativity loose in the store. (Check out the window displays I helped design for the store!) We're always ahead of the game from other stores with new innovative ideas for customer service, promotions, events, our lesson centre ... I could write an entire blog about what we do around the community, but that's not why we're here today!
The latest innovation from our trusty one-shop-musical-stop is ... drum roll ... Twitter! That's right - Long & McQuade Brampton is on Twitter! Musicians tend to get better than their instruments after a while. I've seen many a' soon-to-be rock star come in to buy their first Fender Squier, the typical 'student model' for those introduced into the world of guitar, gazing dreamily at the Gibson Les Paul Standard, with gold top finish, three kickin' double-coil humbucker pickups, silky smooth, 'solid body' mahogany arch top with ebony fretboard, gorgeous mother-of-pearl binding and inlays ... sorry. I tend to get carried away. You can tell what I'm coveting at work at present moment.
Well, the point is, that musicians eventually need something better when their instrument-playing skills get better. You wouldn't use tools you bought at a dollar store if you work as a construction worker, right? You'll get the best, reliable tools that will do the job right. Think of your tools as an artist, the beads, gemstones, findings and colours you select, and how it all comes together into one visual feast. We grow as artists, and eventually learn more skills, better our work, leading to better tools, using better materials in our work ... I assume you know where this leads now! To help L'il Miss Rock Star road from Squier to Gibson, we help her by buying her Squier from her for credit to help go towards something else - something better! - that she can exude her masterful skills upon. Then, when she's playing better than that one, we'll do the same thing all over! And, pray tell, what happens to those instruments that we've bought from her? We resell them at really great deals! We look forward to a lot of these 'trade-ins' because there's usually a list of customers each of us salespeople have when a really good deal comes in we can tell them about. We've stepped up the game and have started announcing these great deals on Twitter, as well!
Where does that leave me in this circus? My manager, Charlie, knows how 'oddly creative' I am. I always wear my own jewelry to work, receiving compliments from my colleagues with every new piece. This may be a common insight, but when you're one of two female salespeople on a staff of approximately 25, I'd like to say the guys I work with have some style. A lot of them have bought a few pieces for their girlfriends and spouses, which always follows with a compliment on my work the next time I see them in the store. I made a friend!
My window displays, visual merchandising and clever eye-catching tactics around the store proved my versatility with what I can do at work. He pulled me in his office, and asked me to make some cash register signs that were, and I quote, "odd, but cute". Yep, I can do that. Just, how do I do it with musical instruments, birds and the internet?
This is a work in progress, which I believe is consistent with Rule #6. I had been working on these last week, and I'm almost finished tonight! I want to finish these as quickly as I can to get them to the store! Take a look!

MIAC/PAL 2009!
It's that time of year again! The MIAC and PAL trade shows at the International Centre, August 23rd and 24th! Everything you need to know about the latest technology in the music and pro-audio industry today. As my daily disguise as a sales associate as Long & McQuade Brampton, it's imperative for me to know about the latest news in the business. This year, MIAC is 130,000 square feet chocked full of "the latest guitars, basses, stringed, percussion and wind instruments, sheet music, and music publications" from "the most reputable manufacturers, distributors, and industry suppliers."
On the PAL side of things, they're brimming with "the latest technologies and emerging trends in professional audio, video and lighting equipment" to better suit fast-growing expectations of a demanding market.
With the declining market recently, MIAC/PAL wanted to focus on economic success when the market starts a rebound, and even tips on what a business can do to take advantage of the downturn. Numerous seminars and luncheon meetings were made available to industry workers and associates.
Nick, Graham and I made our visit, bumping into fellow co-workers, a few familiar (and famous!) faces, and walking out with some pretty cool swag! Take a look at some pictures below! I also have some videos of impromptu performances and jams, so I'll try to upload those later.

Nick found ProMark's new drumstick line ...
... probably more suited for the 'big and tall' players, right, Athol?
Did anyone else get a chance to make it?

MORE Fun Window Merchandising!
To recap, I work at Long & McQuade Musical Instruments where I have a helluva great time doing something that I do well - merchandising! We've got a glorious bay window that gives plenty to the imagination. If you got a chance to check out these window displays I made at work, you'll certainly get a kick out of these!

July: Camping Essentials Everybody at work was talking about camping trips that they've been planning; big bunch of friends going to a cottage, couples retreating for the weekend together, big bonfire parties out in the 'boonies'. Well, what can you put in each of these circumstances to make more fun of your vacation? A musical instrument! I focused on travel-friendly instruments, stuff you wouldn't feel too bad about if it got a little road-worn, and we're not talking the gig-type 'road-worn'. Thanks to my parents for letting us use the tent for the month! Featured gear: Martin Backpacker guitar, Gibson J45 acoustic guitar, Yamaha APX ele/acoustic guitar, Traynor TVM10 battery-powered amplifier, maple Harpsicle, LP cajon, African djembes, Inferno effects light (for campfire), various hand percussion instruments.
