Power to the Power Armor!

Posted by Hal'jin in , , ,

Ah, slow news time from my side... But definitely not slow progress! There's going to be a lot of things once I'm done with things here. Sadly I'm not exactly at home, forgot to grab the camera and I don't have anything to work with photos on the laptop right now, so no pictures to show, sorry!

However the local manofactorum is working all days bringing.. .Power Armor. I've spent the last week painting Power Armor. And only that (Well, not counting the distractions of the internet and Civilization IV I recently acquired). I'm going a bit crazy from the ammounts of Space Wolves Grey, but now I'm almost done!

Here's how the painting chart looks now, in this case "started" means "Power Armor fully painted":

Not bad, huh. Still a long way to go, but painting everything else seems... Well, just overally more pleasant. And I succesfully managed to basecoat everything save for 5 Scouts, but I make a bit more elaborate bases for those, so they took a bit longer.

I'll try to get pictures up once I'm done with something, now a few things to perhaps stir some discussion.

Are you aware of ETC? It's the European Team Championship if you haven't heard. Probably the biggest competetive event of the Europe. Now, this year, for the first time ever, there's going to be Team America present there. While I don't play there (Team Poland is actually taken from the top of our national league and considering we're one of the top teams getting there is really hard) I read discussion about it all around the internet. And I have to say I'm really surprised at American opinions, their self-righteousness and knowing-it-all, berating lists and such. Someone's in for a huge surprise. Have you heard about the discussion that's going back and forth? I'm curious what are your opinions.

A hundred readers and the Great Company

Posted by Hal'jin in , ,

Just yesterday I have finally reached the magical 100 followers mark. Wow. Thanks a lot for your continuous support guys!

But there's something entirely different I wanted to show you. I have been thinking for a while, about turnint my Space Wolf army into a full Great Company. A huge task, not to be achieved soon, but oh so tempting.

Expanding the Wolves is just so much easier and more pleasant than the Guard, at least that's what I feel. Should I want to expand the 42nd Cadian's 3rd Company, I would have to add... hundreds of guardsmen, the company being roughly 300 men(6 platoons with 5 squads each). The idea makes me shiver, thinking of all the painting, not to mention the though of the cost of the entire endeavour. Space Wolves on the other hand have roughyl 120 men in each of their Great Company, at least that's what I managed to find (Some other sources mentioned 150 - 1000.. which is quite a huge margin..), which is much easier to achieve (that's less than the guardsmen I already have...)

But to even start on such an ambitious project one needs a good plan. A great idea by Admiral Drax comes to the rescue however! Here it is, the (stolen!) Sven Bloodhowl's Great Company Chart!

It also makes it much easier to track down names of those characters for future background writing reference. The N/A parts are things currently not even planned, but would most likely be included in the full Great Company. Also there would probably be "a bit" more vehicles (But nothing as crazy as the Company described in the codex having 12 Land Raiders...). I don't know if I ever get to the full company though. Perhaps some other new shiny army will come round. And there's the Guard to expand as well.

Let me know what you think and if you have any idea on how a Company should look like! Also, I am working on a similar chart for the 42nd Cadian, should be done soon.

The First Pack - Complete!

Posted by Hal'jin in , , ,

There we go, actual content! The first pack, at long last, is finished, painted, varnished and based! After a long while, fresh pictures! Also, it seems I don't have witty post titles for Wolves. Damned Relic not featuring them in Dawn of War. *cough*

First off, a group shot. Not the best, I realise. Other shots are better. I actually found a way to do those pictures a bit better I think, reduced the way the camera lights them up so much. One picture is slightly too dark I guess, but still everything is perfectly visible. It seems to be a bit more of an issue with Wolves, due to their light armor.

Obviously there's more shots, just click below, as usual!

The first two, He-man and the Melta-man! I like them both quite a bit, though the tattoo on the He-man could've been better (it also isn't really visible in the photo...). He was also painted after slightly too long break, I think it does show in some parts...

The next two. The guy on the left is one I like the least. I somehow feel like I totally screwed up his face, but in the end and in the squad he doesn't look _that_ bad. The right one I actually like a lot, with the highlighting on the helmet.

The next two, left one that you've seen before as the first Wolf painted, and the right one which is the model with Mark of the Wulfen. Quite a bloody model. I found a neat way to paint blood. Might explain it in some future post, though I'd like to expand it myself first and that'll take a few experiments.

And the last two. The left one being a "Pack Leader" (purely a fluff concept, no such thing in rules). I like how the gold turned out on the er... winged...skull...on a stick.. backpack thing. The blood on the right chainsword is painted a bit differently and I think it doesn't look as convincing, but it isn't too bad either I guess.

Now a few closeups on things I found to be interesting. There might be more of those, but oh well. First, my favourite face. Maybe not the best one (they turned out quite evenly decent, of which I'm happy), but I like that tattoo design I stole from Morrowind a lot. I'll more than likely reused it later somewhere, though surely altered slightly.

The best freehand company logo I managed... Which is also the first I made, duh! And yes, the shot is quite ruined by that reflection..

Finally more blood for the... er, Allfather, obviously. After all when his chainsword got so messy, there's no way other bits didn't. Also the chainsword grip looks really nasty... So the Wulfen fella actually got the same idea I did when I first saw it!

Lastly the Wolf Guard! The glowing eyes on the Thunderhammer I wasn't really too sure about, they were hit or miss... and they turned out as an inaccurate hit, I think. Do let me know what you think, but I probably won't repeat that experiment again.

He also knows how to use that Hammer, it's surely not sparkly new.

Aaand that's it for pictures! As usualy I would love to hear your comments. Also, if you have any ideas or perhaps know Nordic mythology and culture so well you know about interesting things (mainly related to fire) that could be used (symbols and such mostly, I've got the names and read up a bit of "dry" descriptions) or serve as inspiration I would really appreciate the help.

Now I just have to come up with names for every Wolf or at least the Wolf Guard. Oh well, Warhammer Fantasy RPG supplement with a table of Norse names is certainly going to help!

As for other things, I'm working on a Vostroyan commision right now, being about 25% done, hopefuly will get more done this week. Also, I finally got the Wolf vehicles, so no longer must the Wolves borrow Chimeras from the 42nd Cadian regiment to ride into battle! I'm in the process of wolf-ifying them, will post up shots when it's done! The Long Fang pack is also put together now, expect some shots soon!

The First Pack

Posted by Hal'jin in , , ,

It's been a while since last update, gosh it's been a quiet November from my side. I figured I sohuld post something and since there's nothing really finished yet I'll post a nice WIP post (duh!)!

I'm nearing the completion of the first Grey Hunter pack, so I figured I'll just toss in a few pictures of those. They're coming along really nicely, love how they turn out in the end, even though a few things could've been done a bit better. But hey, take a look yourselves.

Obviously, there's more if you click below.

The three that are really finished first. Like how all those three turned out. You can see the melta on the right!

The back shows off my favourite element though - wolf furs. I'm painting them along the way described in a WD article and really liking the way they turn out!

Another two, which are next to be finished. You can see what a terrible face the one on the left has... And you can see the He-man on the right! I just couldn't paint his hair any other color..

And the last two. The model on the left is a "pack leader". There isn't anything to support him rules-wise, but he's the guy that'd lead the pack while the Wolf Guard isn't present. If the squad had any power fists or such, he'd be the guy with it. On the right on the other hand you can see the Mark of the Wulfen guy. It took me a while to figure how to make those and came up with this. Looking how fluff-wise pretty much every Grey Hunter should be tatooed I decided to enhance it, with a lil' inspiration from the codex. The MotW model has to have 3 things: A chainsword (The bolter wielding guys won't ever be one!), a wolf skull attached to his belt and his tattoo will be red, unlike the blue ones of the other models. Truth to be said only the last feature is defning, but I'm certainly sticking to all 3 aspects, even though there are plenty other models with chainswords and wolf skulls (though not at the belt), while none has a red tattoo.

And here's the only element done on the Wolf Guard. I take the WG heads out of the terminator box, helps them being truly unique! I'm pondering a lot on that Thunderhammer and how could i put Thunder in it..

And lastly, another WIP, a Dreadnaught conversion I've made. Truth to be said dreads are cool, but somehow I just can't see them pack a whole lot of punch on the tabletop... I guess I'll have to try him one day. He's just going to be a regular Dreadnaught. I shall fight the urge, but I know I shall fail and I'm so going to buythe venerable one that FW is said to be working on now!

And that's it for today. I can share a few other things though. I've played two practice games with my Wolves so far and I really love the army. I was fighting Orks at 1200 points and I had terminators in the list, which are a huge point sink at that point level and yet I managed to triumph once! We haven't finished the second battle, but it was going really well. In first I literally stomped my opponent, having lost only two terminators and getting a single wound on a Rune Priest during the entire game, but that's all thanks to table quarters deployment and Lootas not being able to reach me from the far corner... Perhaps we should've played on a smaller table! :p The second battle started awfully when Lootas decimated the entire Long Fang squad leaving just the brave terminator with a CML who passed like 15 saves! He then proceeded to smash trukks apart, lovely! The tide has turned when a drop pod with terminators arrived aided by scouts later and managed to tear through the Lootas (there were 2x10 of them and a Mek with a SAG). WHen the battle ended I had terminators and Scouts mopping up two remaining Lootas, a single GH squad and two Ork Trukks full of Boyz still in the middle of the table. It could've gone either way, but definitely wasn't as totally lost as I though when my LFs popped.

All in all Wolves are a very fun army. It certainly feels like a relief when you can finally punch someone in the face in combat and not just die horribly no matter what's attacking you! Grey Hunters win the games. If I had picked another GH and LF packs instead of terminators (They are expensive, oh yes...) I would have much easier time dealing with the greenskins.

Oh, and in the other news, I'm thinking about the next "chapter" to the story I've posted in a while. More will be revealed... Let me know if you liked it though! Also I hate how I really want to assemble stuff now. Putting Wolves together was a lot of fun! However I have made a resolution not to buy more minis till the end of the year, and till I paint at least the half of the units I've got... Oh well, I might go back to the Guard a lil' bit and put that third veteran squad together at last, especially since I have a few leftover scout shotguns now!

Also I'm devising another painting tutorial, related to Wolves. I'll have to think it through well however, so not just yet!

That's it for tonight I guess. It seems Wolves post attract less comments than the IG stuff but oh well! ;) Thanks for reading!

Sven Bloodhowl's Great Company

Posted by Hal'jin in , , , , , ,

And so it begins. My Space Wolves are well along the way coming to a nice ammount of a bit over 1000 points now! It's about time to show unveil them and share with all of you!

I have decided to go with an existing Great Company, simply because I didn't really like the idea of modifying fluff to my needs by executing a Wolf Lord and I didn't really feel like some Imperial outcasts that could be classed as the 13th co. Out of those two caught my immidiate attention: Sven Bloodhowl and Kjarl Grimblood. In the end I decided the first one simply sounded cooler and gave me way more flexibility in army building.

I have cooked up a list I'm aiming to collect right now, let me sha... Okay, okay. I know you want to see the minis first, so here goes!

This is a sample Grey Hunter. Truth to be said he's also the only Grey Hunter and the only Wolf painted so far... But I think he turned out reeeeaaally well and if I manage to keep that up across the board the army will be an eyecandy I am intending to make!

Of course that's not the only picture. Click below, as usual, for way more content!

A couple of other shots of the very same Marine.

Here a skulll on his backpack. I'm not entirely the fan of the method it was painted with (I am painting my Wolves exactly as described in a White Dwarf article) so I might modify it a bit later.

A scary freehand of Sven Bloodhowl's Company mark.

And a closeup on the pelt! That element I particularly like, just like the face.

I would love to hear your opinions about the model, its base and everything! But of course, that's not all. Here is the entire pack of the Grey Hunter above!

As you can see I started working on them somewhat... If you look closer at their faces you might see that I am keeping closely to the fluff described in the book...

Here is the second Grey Hunter pack I've got.

And now for something more awesome - the Wolf Guard Terminators! I've seen that a lot of lists is pulling away from those or making them into a min-max squad, but I love those models so much there's no way I'm not going to field them. As you can see they boast twin Frost Blade/Storm Shields and twin Combi-meltas/Power Fists (the grey fella is still missing his combi-weapon - they're extrememly hard to get their hands on!) accompanied by Wolf Guard carrying a Cyclone Missile Launcher and a Wolf Claw. If you followed the blog you might've met him... a while ago..

A small Wolf Scouts pack. Not _that_ interesting, but what's going to be interesting is their bases. Maybe you can make out what's going to be on them from the two middle ones?

And now... Behold, the Wolf Lord Sven Bloodhowl in the flesh... and a suit of Terminator Armor! He might only be assembled from ready elements without pretty much any converting, but the parts were so excellent I simply didn't see the need to do that at all! The paintjob however will have to be special here...

Finally a converted piece - a Rune Priest! I decided that the axe didn't really say "Runic Weapon" to me. The sword from the Wolf Pack sprue however...!

And last, but not the least the only vehicle I currently have - a humble Drop Pod.

Not much there... Though the interior is almost fully painted - just enough to glue it together! Here, have a peek.

There will be much more detailed shots of this later, when the Drop Pod is finished entirely.
Almost forgot about the list, here it is, or rather, they are, for I am unsure which variant will fare better:

The Firstborn Stand!

Posted by Hal'jin in , , , ,

You wanted more Guard? Here you have more Guard! Not Cadians though - Vostroyans! Not quite mine too, it's a commision work. My first, even!

I will keep you updated on the progress of those, of course. Here are some shots.

Of course, as usual, there's more.

As you can see, it's a random bunch of differen Vostroyans. I'll be starting work on them next week, then I'll divide them into painting groups. In all honesty, I can't wait. Those minis are simply awesome! Check those snipers too:

I'm supposed to just paint, no basing or anything more. Still going to be quite a bit to do. What will they look like? "Codex" colours. Check out this one:

It actually is painted by me, since he used to be mine, over a year ago. I bet some of the minis I'm going to paint were once mine too. Won't have any doubt so or problems with those!

But before I start on the commision I have to finally finish my Manticore and Psykers! I'll get to them over the weekend (Yes, yes, I was supposed to have done it ages ago, I know!), expect pictures soon! I've been kept busy by a few other things, including this.

If you haven't read it, go do it! I've only started, but I have to say it's excellent so far! I'll write up som review once I'm done, I think.

That's it for today, thanks for reading!

A little WIP

Posted by Hal'jin in , , , ,

I was supposed to post the twin Vendettas, but I thought they can wait a bit and I'll post a WIP of what I'm currently doing, as I don't really post these too often and I'd love to hear your opinions in this one, so that I could still change some things.

Here he is, the first of the advisors, the one I don't leave home without - the Officer of the Fleet. I only started the work on him, but I'd like to hear your opinons on the blue coat.

There's more, of course!

For those of you who do not have the codex and do not want to look through GW site, here's the shot of an OoF painted by the 'eavy Metal team.

Now, I feel I haven't caught the deepness of the blue. Sadly from blueish paints I only own Regal Blue, Space Wolves Grey and borrown a pot of Asurmen Blue wash from my cousin. If you have any tips, they' be muchly appreciated!

But not to make this post so small, a couple of other WIPs.

The Company Command Squad. The guy in the middle isn't the CO though, he's a sergeant for the 302nd in case I'd like a Power Fist. Or something like that.

And the remaining things waiting for their turn at the brush.

And... that's it. I find it hard to believe, you know. That's all I have left for the Guard. Of course, I still own a few odd models that aren't included here, like the old metal Standard, Master Vox, a plasmagunner, some odd GL guardsmen... Also there's the 303rd coming, and the Chimeras which I'll be buying very soon at last.
But still I'm nearing the point where everything I will field will be fully painted. Gasp.
I did some counting yesterday. With the missing Chimeras I own 2900 pts of Guard. Soon to be fully painted 2900 points of Guard. Wow. Although funnily enough, looking at the ammount of stuff on the shelves it's a bit silly it's only 2.9k. If I had as many Space Marines (or if I spent the entire budget on those SMs) I'd have probably around 4k at least. Silly, silly IG.
Also this is the post no. 49. I suppose I could make the next one somewhat special. Quite fitting now that the army is nearly done, though surely won't be till the time of next post. Stay tuned, perhaps I'll indulge further onto the future of the 42nd!
