Let's see if you can figure what's that going to be!

I Hate Right Hands - Part II - The Dark Box of Wonders

Posted by Hal'jin in , , , , , , , ,

Time for another insatllement from the IHRH series! This time I'll cover good sources of obtaining useful bits and pieces and talk a bit about maintaining your bits box.

After the huge wall of text that the last part was, this time it will be hopefuly shorter!

To the point. First of all, what's a bits box? It's some kind of a container (or containers) in which you hold all your spare bits, unused parts of kits and various random items that one day might come in handy when making a mini. Here're my boxes:

First, the biggest box (it used to hold Cadian HQ), I sorted my bits in it to make it easier to find the thing I need. The big slot on top holds all the heavy weapons and huge parts. The the right we've got small and large accessories and on the bottom the weapons in the bigger one and body parts in the smaller.

The second thing is a Forge World pouch, in which I keep the few remaining parts of the original contents and all my green stuff press-molds and contraptions.

And the last is the box which holds all the remaining Cadian bodies I got once upon a time, that still didn't get a use (Though they will very soon!), spare bases and some cable that might come in handy.

There's one more, that I haven't taken a shot of, a Hellhound box in which I keep all the vehicle accessory sprues, spare tracks and most the bits coming from vehicles.

As you can see there's loads of stuff in there. Guard kits tend to produce a lots of spare parts (though of course, never enough torsos/legs!). It's a good thing, as some of these parts are usable by other (Not neccessarily Guard players - Inquisition and Space Marines can find the most use, though other armies could still use some parts, for example for bases) so you could trade them for more interesting stuff.

Before moving on, I'd like to show you some oddities I found in my box, and I actually have no clue of their origin (Well, one is a SoB Laud Hailer or however that's spelt). I acquired them when I made a huge trade of all my 35 Vostroyans for a bucket of Cadians. (I intended to collect Vostroyans first, though I decided that the price would be too big for the first army, and it'd be a long time till I'd be able to play). Here they are:

And the second very important thing every 40k player should have. Neodymium magnets:

They have so many uses that it's impossible to name them all.

And now a list of good sources of bits.

ForgeWorld stuff
Namely the three kits:

They have tons of useful and awesome looking bits. I'd reccomend at least one of either the first or second to personalize your veterans with! The third is losing a bit of appeal with the new codex, since you only get pieces for 5 vets. You could see several items from the first pack on my veterans and you could see them on my platoon command posted a while back (And now I wish I put those on vets, heh..).

Games-Workshop kits:
I will list kits I found to have useful things and write a short list of useful bits within each of them.

  • Space Marines Tactical Squad

    • Purity Seals

    • Litany parchments

    • Bolter scopes

    • Small ammo pouches

    • Bolt pistols
    • Combat Knives

    • Meltaguns and plasma guns

  • Space Marines Assault Squad

    • Plasma Pistols
    • Melta Bombs

  • Space Marines Terminators

    • Purity Seals

  • Imperial Guard Cadian Command HQ and Catachan Command HQ
    The new kit, of course.

    • Everything, pretty much!
      Check the parts list here

  • Imperial Guard Catachan kits
A couple of things from both regular squads and heavy weapons that are useful for _pure_ Cadian veterans

    • Lasguns

    • Vox-caster

    • Heads
    • Pouches

    • Backpacks

  • Chaos Space Marines Squad

    • Plasma Gun (With trimmed spikes!)
    • Plasma Pustols (as above)
    • Combat Knives

    • Pouches

  • Kroot Carnivores

    • Accessories - there's some bits that could pass as demolition charge

  • WFB Empire Pistolliers

    • Bags, Pouches, Bottles, Bedrolls

    • A bit off-topic, but Horses are great for converted Rough Riders...

  • WFB Empire State Troops

    • Bottles

    • Some heads can be used after slight adjustements

Alright, that's it. Hope you find some inspiration within this and it'll help you a bit! Next time, a more inspirational thing - Green Stuff tutorial!

Platoon Command online!

Posted by Hal'jin in , ,

Not _that_ much today, but still. The Command Squad is now fully finished!

I'm quite proud of the guys, turned out quite well. There are of course flaws which annoy me (although I do find flaws immidiately in every single piece of my work, not matter what people say of it ;)), but all in all they turned out great. Especially the officer, let me re-iterate how much I love this model.

Clicky below for more pics of the rest of the squad!

And so the entire first platoon is ready for combat, fully converted, painted and based! The first platoon is supposed to be a special weapon platoon, armed with the Imperium's and Regiment's best equipment, hence the plasma guns and the Lascannons every squad has.

I was thinking for the new codex I'll probably move Lascannons into squad (and maybe double the ammount) on their own and add a second plasma to ever of those squads and/or add a squad with meltas. That'd make exactly for adding a vox fella and second plasma into each squad, but I'm not bothering with glueing anything, just in case those rumours weren't that accurate or I end up with a different vision.

Now the second platoon which is armed with more mundane weaponry. Namely Grenade Launchers all the way with some Autocannons and Missle Launchers! Even though flamers seem to be much more effective I just love grenade launchers. Maybe it comes a bit from DoW, where Grenades rock (DoW II rocks as well if you're wondering), but whatever. Maybe I'll swap out some guys with flamers in new codex or make 2xgrenade 2x flamer squads.

For now I'm pretty much painting the guys and not marking their squad assigments yet, till the new codex and new army list.

Little tidbits.

Posted by Hal'jin in , , ,

As I promised. 42nd Cadian log is back in business! Starting off with some showcase work I've done, just because I love the model. Then, we move on from 42nd machine park onto the nearly done platoon! Here we go.

Lord Marshal Graf Harazahn sees you! Fight in the Emperor's name!

And more shots of the Graf!

Now a sneak peak of an update to come. 42nd machine park, including Demolisher, LRBT, Basilisk, Hellhound and two recon Sentinels. More shots to come soon!

Finally a nearly finished (just basing) 1st Platoon, fully equipped with Plasma Guns and Lascannons! It took me really long to finally finish them, painting all those uniforms turned out really annoying the way I do it, so I had to force myself a bit.

More of the platoon, a WIP command squad which I'm working on as we speak. I decided to order a Cadian Upgrade pack from Forge World (I wrote about it a.. while ago). And as I decided, I did! Command squads are now showing off awesome parts from FW. I particularly love the officer pose. I'll pose up more once they're finished!

With the new IG codex coming up fairly soon I decided it's about time to stop slacking and get to work! I hope to paint everything I got left (Entire second platoon consisting of 4 squads...) before May, when I'll get my hands busy on some Valkiries, psykers and most likely even more guardsmen! Bear with me as there's still a long way to go.

That's it for today. Requests for closeups? Post 'em! Also, tell your friends that 42nd is back in business, ready to smack the enemies of the Imperium!

Also as the closing words, thanks for those comments in previous post. I honestly though everyone just forgot about this, it's nice to see I have some support. :)

First Guardsmen!

Posted by Hal'jin in ,

That's how the first of the Guardsmen looks like. He's also the only painted Guardsmen so far. :p He's slightly converted, if you see the white rag on the gun and the additional bag.

Generally in the 42nd I paint everything according to that color scheme. The conscripts are just guardsmen straight out of the box, of course with the obligatory white stripe on the helmet. The regular guardsmen are getting slight conversions, while the veteran are painted in a camo scheme and each one of them is unique (I almost finished converting them! :)) The command squad guardsmen (bodyguards of the Junior Officers and the Senior one) are going to be just regular Guardsmen... At least till I get enough money to buy this.
