‘As Told By Ginger’ Fans Speculate Courtney Was in Love with Ginger

The early 2000s gave viewers Nickelodeon shows such as Rugrats, SpongeBob SquarePants and As Told by Ginger. The latter was written from a teenage girl’s perspective and expressed many of the issues teens faced at the time. Throughout the show’s three seasons, fans got to walk with Ginger Foutley as she battled the awkward junior high school experiences and finding herself.

Although the show wrapped up production more than a decade ago, fans still have speculations about some of the characters, specifically the relationship Courtney Gripling shared with Ginger.

Ginger is the titular character of the show, As Told by Ginger. She is an average girl from the fictional town, Sheltered Shrubs. Ginger has two best friends, Dodie and Macie, who sometimes betray her, and she refuses to trust them.

Ginger’s mother is a nurse who always wants to give her daughter advice regarding her high school situation. However, Ginger hates listening to her advice because she is often embarrassed by it. Her younger brother Carl and his BFF Hoodsey are always trying to use Ginger as a test subject for their schemes.

Not much is known about Ginger’s father, Jonas. However, it was revealed that her father left them when Carl was born, and when she invited him to her school play, he didn’t show up. However, Jonas makes a brief return to the family and occasionally pops in to give Ginger some fatherly advice.

Ginger is a science geek who is very academically minded. She is also a talented writer and is particularly good at poetry and keeping a diary. At the beginning of the show, Ginger wasn’t considered popular until she became friends with the school’s it-girl Courtney.

Courtney is the it-girl at Lucky Jr. High. She is a typical popular girl who is mostly not that bright. She is seen as sophisticated and kind-hearted and always wants to know how the middle-class citizens lived. Courtney’s parents are wealthy, but they end up getting a divorce as the series progresses. She took a liking to Ginger and initially wanted to see how Ginger would handle herself if placed among all the popular kids.

Much to her surprise, Ginger adapts quickly, and Courtney thus became increasingly close to her. Courtney has two friends who are usually portrayed as being her mindless followers, Miranda - who doesn't like Ginger - and Mipsy. She is often jealous of Ginger’s bond with her friends Macie and Dodie. She knows they’ll always stand by her no matter the situation, unlike Miranda and Mipsy.

Miranda hates the budding friendship between Courtney and Ginger and schemes to relegate Ginger back to the nerd she previously was. When Courtney’s mother gets an infection from a facelift injection and has to stay in the hospital, Courtney goes to live with Ginger and her mother.

She instantly forms a connection with Ginger’s mother, Lois, which makes Ginger jealous. Although Courtney is portrayed as a selfish and shallow person, she can be well-spoken and polite. She has also come through for Ginger whenever Miranda and Mipsy conjure up plans to ruin her.

Fans think Courtney was in love with Ginger

Throughout the series, Ginger and Courtney become close and form a bond that can be likened to siblings. Although the two friends had a form of understanding between them, fans on Reddit think that there was probably more to their relationship than meets the eye.

Many fans said that Courtney was in love with Ginger due to her affection and sometimes infatuation toward the titular character.

Although the theories aren’t canon - in the official series finale, "The Wedding Frame," Ginger marries and has a baby her friend Darren - it makes sense why fans would think that way. When the show was airing, sexuality wasn’t an openly talked-about thing on tween shows. Therefore, it would make sense if Courtney loved Ginger but kept it a secret, as fans speculate.

‘Rugrats’ Co-Creator Arlene Klasky Inks with CAA

Arlene Klasky, one half of Klasky Csupo, has signed with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) at a time when her beloved Rugrats franchise is being relaunched.

Credit: Olivia Crawford.

Nickelodeon is bringing the animated series back with a 26-episode order on which Klasky will serve as Executive Producer, along with Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain . Concurrently, Paramount Players is developing a Rugrats live action/animated hybrid movie with Klasky as a producer.

Klasky won three-time Daytime Emmy Awards for Rugrats, which she co-created, and counts 12 Primetime Emmy nominations overall for the animated series which she executive produced including As Told by Ginger and Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man. Rugrats ran for nine seasons and nearly 200 episodes from 1991 to 2004 and was spun off into a successful film trilogy which grossed close to $300M worldwide. The first Rugrats Movie was the first non-Disney animated film to gross $100 million domestically, while its soundtrack went platinum.

The original series also spawned three spin-off series, All Grown Up!, Angelica and Susie's School Daze and Rugrats: Tales from the Crib.

Throughout its run, Rugrats itself earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids' Choice Awards and its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Klasky went on to co-create other hit shows for Nickelodeon such as Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys (she produced the feature version) and was an executive producer on Aaahh!!! Real Monsters through her production company Klasky Csupo, in which she owned with her ex-husband Gábor Csupó.

Klasky will continue to be managed by Tracy Kramer of Toltec Artists. Her attorney is Phil Daniels of Ginsburg Daniels Kallis LLP.

Meet the Voice Behind 'Rugrats' Susie Carmichael | Great Big Story

Cree Summer is a lot of things. She’s a mother, an artist, an actress—and, she’s the voice of your childhood. As the vocal force behind characters, such as Susie Carmichael from Rugrats and All Grown Up!, Miranda on As Told By Ginger, Tiff on My Life as a Teenage Robot, Penny from Inspector Gadget, and Elymyra from Tiny Toon Adventures, Cree has made a career bringing some of your favorite cartoons to life. In an industry that doesn’t boast a lot of diversity on or off screen, characters like Susie Carmichael and people like Cree are especially important. Historically, white voice actors would provide the voices for all characters, regardless of race or background. Today, thanks to the work of Cree and others, cartoons are beginning to better represent the kids that look to them for a little bit of guidance and a whole lot of unadulterated joy.

Great Big Story would like to say thank-you to their guest editor this week, Yvonne Orji. Check her out in Insecure,” Sundays at 10:30 P.M. on HBO.

This story is a part of Great Big Story's Human Condition series. Come along and let them connect you to some of the most peculiar, stirring, extraordinary, and distinctive people in the world!

Emily Kapnek & Monica Tomova | As Told By Ginger | Women's History Month | Nickelodeon Animation

Nickelodeon Animation are continuing their celebration of Women’s History Month with these storyboards by Monica Tomova from the 2000 Nickelodeon show As Told By Ginger, created by Emily Kapnek, who sums up her inspiration for the show: “Why has no one done an animated show that really looks at all of the angst of being that junior high school age [when] you’re so awkward and want to fit in but also want to stand out [and] not knowing how to do both. That was the whole motivation. Plus, just a healthy dose of reality. I didn’t feel there were a lot of cartoons that were really honest and dealt with real issues that kids were dealing with. The plan was to have Ginger clearly grappling with a lot of the milestone stuff that kids deal with, [like] the pressure to fit in, the pressure to look a certain way, shave her legs, etc.”

Arlene Klasky | Women's History Month | Nickelodeon Animation

Nickelodeon Animation are kicking off Women’s History Month with this Tuesday motivation from Arlene Klasky, one of the very first creators of Nick Animation (when Rugrats premiered on August 11th, 1991 on the same day as Ren & Stimpy and Doug), along with behind-the-scenes art of the iconic Nick shows she helped created including Rugrats, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, The Wild Thornberrys, Rocket Power, and As Told By Ginger!
