TV Animation Veteran Andrei Svislotski Passes Away, Aged 62

Animation veteran Andrei Svislotski sadly passed away on Monday, Dec. 19th at age 62. The Russian-Born animator had a rich and colorful career, which he embarked upon after studying architecture and animation in Moscow and working on Russian shows such as Kubik, Doremi and Cat Leopold.

In the 1990s he joined L.A.-based Klasky Csupo studio, working on animated shows such as Edith Anne, Santo Bugito and Duckman as character designer, layout supervisor and animator.

Svislotski was an in-demand animation director for popular Nickelodeon series such as Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Rocket Power, Rugrats and its sequel All Grown Up! He also helmed several Curious George home-video projects. He received a Daytime Emmy nomination for his work on Aaahh!!! Real Monsters in 1995 and another Emmy nom for directing the Curious George series in 2014, an acclaimed 2D show that he worked on for many seasons. He was also character layout supervisor on The Rugrats Movie in 1998 and was animation director on the studio’s adult animated project The Immigrants. He also directed several episodes of Disney Jr.’s Sheriff Callie’s Wild West.

He also worked as a storyboard artist on a wide variety of projects including A Very Pink Christmas, Doc McSuffins, DreamWorks Dragons, Peter Rabbit, Masha and the Bear, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Mission Force One. In addition to Klasky Cuspo, he worked with Nickelodeon, Paramount, Brown Bag Films, Universal, Disney Junior, and DreamWorks Animation TV through the years.

Svislotski’s friends have set up a fundraiser to support his family during this difficult time.

They wrote, “On December 19th, 2022, our dear friend Andrei Svislotski suddenly passed away at work. He was 62 years old. Andrei was a man of enormous talent and a very fun guy to be around. He will be gravely missed by his wife Elena, their son Kirill, and all of his friends and colleagues which are many.”

Legendary Animator Everett Peck Passes Away

Illustrator, cartoonist, animator, writer and teacher Everett Peck — best known for his popular animated series Duckman and Squirrel Boy — died Tuesday, June 14. The sad news was shared on Peck’s Instagram and Facebook feeds. His cause of death was not disclosed.

Credit: Animation Magazine.

Born October 9, 1950 in Taos, New Mexico, Peck’s distinctive illustration style brought colorful, edgy characters to life across the pages of The New Yorker, Playboy and Time, as well as comics, print ads, books and movie posters. As an artist, he has shown work in galleries across the U.S. and as far away as Tokyo. Peck was the subject of a solo art exhibition in 2011 at California’s Oceanside Museum of Art

Peck turned his talents to animation as a character designer/executive design consultant on the late 1980s hit The Real Ghostbusters, creating most of the show’s imaginative ghosts. He returned to the franchise for the 1997 animated series Extreme Ghostbusters.

The Real Ghostbusters

At Klasky-Csupo, Peck wrote for the classic Nickelodeon cartoon, Rugrats (1991-2004).  But his most famous work, Duckman, was already finding fans as a comic book published by Dark Horse in 1990. The concept was adapted into a critically acclaimed adult animated sitcom for USA Network, running for four seasons from 1994 to 1997 and animated at Klasky-Csupo.

Developed by Peck, Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, Ron Osborn and Jeff Reno, Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man voice starred Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) as Duckman — a lewd, self-hating yet egocentric widower and P.I. living in Los Angeles with his equally complex family. The voice cast also featured Gregg Berger, Dweezil Zappa, Dana Hill, Pat Musick, E.G. Daily (Rugrats), Nancy Travis, Frank Welker (The Wild Thornberrys) and Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Wild Thornberrys).

Duckman. Original art by Everett Peck

The series received three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Animated Program, for the episodes “T.V. or Not to Be” (1994), “Noir Gang” (1996) and “Duckman and Cornfed in Haunted Society Plumbers” (1997). Duckman won a CableACE award for Animated Programming in 1996.

Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man

In 2008, Peck told Animation Magazine,  “I came up with Duckman the same way I come up with most of my ideas, by observing people and drawing in my sketchbook. I generally carry my sketchbook around with me were ever I go. I like to sketch in public places like coffee shops and bars. I don’t usually draw exactly what I’m seeing. I’m just looking at all the different types of people and they’re public interactions. If I see something interesting it usually ends up in my sketchbook in one form or another. Sometimes that forms the basis for a character. I used to draw caricatures of people sitting in bars in exchange for drinks. But after a few beers my drawings started looking worse than they usually do and people started getting mad. I almost got in a fight a couple of times so I quit doing that.”

Rugrats

“The basic personality of Duckman and the working relationship with Cornfed is based on a friend of mine and his ex-partner (I emphasize ‘ex’.),” he noted. ” In my earliest sketches I played with putting Duckman in a muscle suit. In one sketch a primeval Cornfed says, ‘Aww Duckman, every time you put that thing on someone gets hurt, and it’s usually you.’ I quickly moved away from the superhero angle. I never really got the whole superhero thing anyway. I mean it’s easy to fight evil when you’re ripped and have a bunch of super powers and a cool suit. Where’s the fun in that? I liked the idea of taking a skinny duck with a big mouth and no genitalia and throwing him up against the world. Now that’s entertainment! I digress. After I got Duckman and Cornfed worked out the other characters fell into place fairly quickly. I lifted King Chicken from a painting I was working on and an old girlfriend inspired Bernice. I started working out stories in comic-strip form, then compiled those with some new material to create the first Duckman comic for Darkhorse Publications. At around the same time I showed Duckman to Gabor Csupo (co-owner of Klasky-Csupo Animation studio). He liked it immediately, so we went into partnership to produce Duckman as an animated property.”

When asked about the reason behind the show’s popularity, Peck responded, “I just went with something that was interesting to me. You can never really judge how people will receive stuff you do, you can drive yourself crazy thinking that way (but now they have some wonderful drugs for that). Of course, I’m happy people do like it. I think one thing people respond to is that Duckman is pretty much the only animated show out there that’s truly an adult show. One thing that I was concerned about initially was retaining the attitude and sexuality of the comic in the animated series. I think we were pretty successful. I didn’t let my kids watch it. I didn’t even mention I was working on Duckman. I told them Daddy had to spend a little time in jail but he’d be home soon.”

Through the 1990s, Peck worked on several favorite series of the decade, including as a visual designer on The Critic, animated by Film Roman for ABC, and as character designer/design consultant on Dragon TalesMen in Black: The SeriesGodzilla: The Series and the Jumanji cartoon. He also animated for Sesame Street

Peck again collaborated with Klasky-Csupo to create the seven-minute TV short Stinky Pierre (2003), which featured Charlie Adler (Rocko's Modern LifeAaahh!!! Real Monsters) as the titular character. The film was directed by Zhenia Delioussine and Andrei Svislotski.

Squirrel Boy

Taking a milder, kid-friendly tone after Duckman, Peck created the Cartoon Network series Squirrel Boy, which aired two seasons and half a dozen shorts from 2006 to 2008. The 2D series produced by Cartoon Network studios centered on an anthropomorphic squirrel named Rodney (voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz, Angry Beavers, Invader ZIM) who was always dragging his human boy BFF Andy (Pamela Adlon, King of the Hill) into his nutty schemes.

Directed by Raymie Muzquiz, the show also featured the voices of Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko's Modern Life), Kurtwood Smith (That '70s Show), Nancy Sullivan (The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh), Billy West (The Ren & Stimpy Show), Jason Spisak (Young Justice), Tom Kenny (Rocko's Modern Life, SpongeBob SquarePants) and Monica Lee Gradischek (KaBlam!'s "Sniz & Fondue", The Fresh Beat Band).

Peck was residing in Oceanside, California at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Helen Vita Peck.

Nicktoons Facts: The Wild Thornberrys was created by Gabor Csupo and Arlene Klasky with Steve Pepoon, David Silverman and Stephen Sustarsic, the third Klasky Csupo collaboration for Nickelodeon. It premiered on September 1, 1998 and ran for 92 episodes over 5 seasons, plus two feature films (The Wild Thornberrys Movie and Rugrats Go Wild) and a TV movie (The Wild Thornberrys: The Origin of Donnie). The Splat Is Back: Klasky Csupo to Launch New 'RoboSplaat' Web Series on Saturday, July 24

Legendary studio Klasky Csupo, creators of such iconic properties as Rugrats, Wild Thornberrys, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man is back on the scene with an all-new digital series, RoboSplaat.

Starting this weekend, all-new episodes of RoboSplaat will premiere on the Klasky Csupo YouTube Channel and Official Instagram page twice per week and continue into early 2021. The series will launch from SDCC 2020. The studio has created over 100 mini episodes of the micro-series for streaming; RoboSplaat will also appear in the new Splaativerse game, where players take a photo, record their voice prompted by a question, and choose from a list of surprise sound effects which are all woven into Splaat's cartoon. The chain story-telling app has 30 stories designed to be played multiple times and will soon be available for download.

Studio co-founder Arlene Klasky initially thought of the idea after Klasky Csupo’s partnership with Nickelodeon came to an end in 2006. While researching online, she realized kids from all over the world were creating mashups of the iconic Klasky Csupo animated logo at the end of Rugrats. This sparked an idea---Klasky, along with designer Sergei Shramkovsky, took the robot and put arms and legs on him. The result was an opportunity to birth a new character and bring him to life in his own online series.

Klasky turned to her longtime friend and collaborator Greg Cipes to voice the character; the actor, musician, and producer has voiced the animated superhero Beast Boy for two decades across Teen Titans, Teen Titans GO!, Young Justice, DC Superhero Girls, and many other DC Superhero franchises. He is also known as the voice of Michelangelo in Nickelodeon’s 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and as Kevin Levin in Ben 10. Cipes voices the RoboSplaat character and hosts TALK CEREAL, a live, weekly interview series, speaking with fellow voice over actors, via the @RoboSplaat Instagram channel.

New episodes of RoboSplaat will drop every Wednesday and Saturday at 9am PST on Instagram (@robosplaat) and YouTube. TALK CEREAL Live with @Gregcipes airs every Monday at 11am PST on Instagram.

Klasky, Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain are all executive producing on ViacomCBS’s Rugrats reboot now in production for broadcast on Nickelodeon from 2021. 26 episodes of the series revival were greenlit back in 2018. A new live-action-3D/CG Rugrats movie, being written by David Goodman, was also announced at that time, with a planned November 13th, 2020 release by Paramount Players, the division of Paramount Pictures that develops and produces co-branded feature films with Viacom’s media networks. After being pushed into 2021, the film has since been pulled from the release schedule entirely; status on the production is unknown.

Founded by Klasky, a graphic designer, and Csupo, a Hungarian-born animator, in a spare room of their apartment in 1981, Klasky Csupo grew to 550 artists, creatives and staff in a state-of-the–art animation facility located in the heart of Hollywood. In 1998, their The Rugrats Movie, was the first non-Disney animated feature to gross in excess of $100,000,000 at the box office.

WHEN:

Premiering from SDCC Saturday, July 24 2020

Starting this weekend, all-new episodes of ROBOSPLAAT will premiere on the Klasky Csupo’s YouTube Channel and Official Instagram page twice per week (Saturdays and Wednesdays 9am PT), and will continue into early 2021.

WHAT:

Klasky Csupo has created over 100 mini episodes of ROBOSPLAAT.

Arlene Klasky initially thought of the idea after Klasky Csupo’s partnership with Nickelodeon came to an end in 2006. While researching online, she realized kids from all over the world were creating mashups of the iconic Klasky Csupo animated logo at the end of Rugrats.

To voice the ROBOSPLAAT character, Klasky turned to her longtime friend and collaborator Greg Cipes (Teen Titans, Teen Titans GO!, Young Justice, DC Superhero Girls, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ben 10, any more).

“The feedback on Instagram from animation fans that grew up on Klasky Csupo shows has been enormous. They seem to be uplifted by Robosplaat’s offbeat personality, humor and nostalgia for their childhood. While Gabor and I were producing our series, we never dreamed the lasting impact our shows would have on those kids,” said Arlene Klasky.

[“It’s so important, now more than ever, that we use our voices to promote uplifting messages of positivity, understanding and friendship,” said Cipes. “This is what Klasky Csupo has always stood for, and I am both humbled and inspired to champion that cause through the mouth of the iconic RoboSplaat.”]

It seemed different yet exactly the same (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

My grass is green

‘Rugrats’ Co-Creator Arlene Klasky Inks with CAA

Arlene Klasky, one half of Klasky Csupo, has signed with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) at a time when her beloved Rugrats franchise is being relaunched.

Nickelodeon is bringing the animated series back with a 26-episode order on which Klasky will serve as Executive Producer, along with Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain . Concurrently, Paramount Players is developing a Rugrats live action/animated hybrid movie with Klasky as a producer.

Klasky won three-time Daytime Emmy Awards for Rugrats, which she co-created, and counts 12 Primetime Emmy nominations overall for the animated series which she executive produced including As Told by Ginger and Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man. Rugrats ran for nine seasons and nearly 200 episodes from 1991 to 2004 and was spun off into a successful film trilogy which grossed close to $300M worldwide. The first Rugrats Movie was the first non-Disney animated film to gross $100 million domestically, while its soundtrack went platinum.

The original series also spawned three spin-off series, All Grown Up!, Angelica and Susie's School Daze and Rugrats: Tales from the Crib.

Throughout its run, Rugrats itself earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids' Choice Awards and its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Klasky went on to co-create other hit shows for Nickelodeon such as Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys (she produced the feature version) and was an executive producer on Aaahh!!! Real Monsters through her production company Klasky Csupo, in which she owned with her ex-husband Gábor Csupó.

Klasky will continue to be managed by Tracy Kramer of Toltec Artists. Her attorney is Phil Daniels of Ginsburg Daniels Kallis LLP.
