Lay low, keep quiet, and Shoot steady.

Commanders of advanced posts, or guards should imitate the following example, reported by the Savannah Republican

‘ On Friday night last; about half-past 9 o'clock, the pickets of the Alapaha Guards (some 22 men) noticed four barges, containing in all from 75 to 100 of the enemy, approaching Proctor from the direction of Peach Creek. They accordingly laid in wait, arranging themselves along the bluff in ambush, and as the enemy got within fifty yards of them they let them have a volley, which was replied to; and a sharp skirmish kept up for about 15 minutes. "Back water!" was the command on board the barges, and the enemy retired. The moon was shining bright and clear, and it is supposed that the enemy suffered more or less. Our men came off safe and sound. This small band of pickets was under the command of 3d Lieut. Lancaster.
