Two years ago, when I had just begun feeding the birds here, I got a picture of a red-bellied woodpecker quite by accident. I was aiming at the feeder to focus, and while I was standing there s/he landed and I got a wonderful picture. Ever since then, the red-bellied woodpecker has been one of my favorite birds (along with the orioles). But they don't come to the feeder as often as the downy and hairy woodpeckers. In fact I hadn't seen one in a while. This morning there was a downy woodpecker on my (new) feeding station and I got my camera out to take a picture. The downy flew away but I happened to look up and see the red-bellied guy way up in a tree. Thanks to my 70-300mm lens and photoshop I got some great pictures.

Awesome!
I know that the birds are probably little consolation for not living in the city anymore, but still, I'm really jealous! I wish I could have a bird feeder (and get something other than pigeons and starlings)!
I'm with you!! I love red-bellied woodpeckers. I need a new camera. Mine doesn't let me get close enough without scaring the birds away. This is a fabulous shot and so is the lighting.
What a great photo!
Fabulous! Amazingly better than the one two years ago!
