We eat Goose at Restoran Wei Kee

DUCK

GOOSE

Wow! I knew a couple of those points but definitely not all of them. (My days of reading the Britannica are long gone la:P)

Anyway, it's funny that just by looking at the diet of the Duck vs. the Goose, you can see why the flesh of the goose should taste better and be superior to that of the duck, no? I mean, the Duck eats the rubbish it swims in.. and the goose feeds on posh, plump grain. No contest.

Anyway.. the answer to the yesterday's blog question is :
(A) is DUCK and (B) is GOOSE.

To test out our theory on the taste of one vs. the other.. we decided to venture into Pudu..
Goose Mecca.

DSC03090
The signs are everywhere..

DSC03091
Duck, Goose.. all living merrily down the same street. Chen Chen BBQ - Read what J2KFM said about the goose.

On the extreme corner end, facing the main-road there is also the famous Beijing Goose place Soon Fatt blogged about by KY SPEAKS. That groovy shack on the road is not appealing to me today as it is blisteringly HOT.

DSC03092
Wei Kee it is then.. shady, cool and near where we found a park.

DSC03102
Look familiar? This is photo- (B)The Goose!
DSC03107
Another profile, (And I could not use this photo because it would give the answer away!) shows you just how solid the meat is and how well fried that plump skin layer is!

So verdict? Well, however good the Goose tastes, let me just say that the price of the bird erased the warm, happy, after-glow, faster than you can say "What the duck?!"...

RM40 for quarter of a bird... HOLY GOOSE! I start to get a little nervous. Eventhough the Goose was yummy, I think blindfolded, I would not be able to tell it apart from the insect ingesting Duck. When we asked how much for a quarter duck the answer was RM15.

RM15! FIFTEEN !! 2.6666 times more than the duck.

Erm, why so expensive you ask? We asked the nice lady director, Ms Yong and she said:
1. Imported from China (apparently the new shipment comes in today so we were lucky to get the tail end of the goose stock. Not so lucky in terms of freshness)
2. Feed is expensive (kindly refer to my top two photos on Duck vs. Goose)
3.Transport/packaging/handling etc. etc..

Call me a PLEBEIAN but I think after this, I will probably opt for the 2.6666 X portion of duck in future. I'll be richer, fuller .. and seeing as my ability to recall a food experience is fading faster these days, ... none the wiser!

What do you think.. Will you still choose the Goose over the Duck? (despite the economic depression ..?!)

Vampires at Cap Square!

DSC03117
CAP-SQUARE.. the latest swanky, wine and dine and hangout place to be.

It's strategic location finds it right at the heart of the matter. A colleague asked me.. where is this place ah, they keep mentioning in the papers. Well, Cap Square (Capital Square) is near Dang Wangi, near Jalan Munshi Abdullah and near Jalan Ampang .. i.e. PRIME location.

DSC03127

Meet the Cap Square Residence. It is a Freehold Condominium and you need to look way up into the blue sky, to see where it ends. This is what we call a ‘super penthouse’ ... super duper 33 floors up in the sky.. I would not mind staying here at all.

FLASHBACK to Uni Days (Daze)....

I remember Bayswater Four Seasons...No matter how much this place is slagged off and condemned, come rain or shine, economic dive or depression, there’ll always be a queue outside Four Seasons Bayswater, with eager diners awaiting their portions of the supposedly legendary roast duck. (Bayswater is an area of west London in the City of Westminster.)

I didn’t eat there as a student because I was always skint:P but that did not stop me walking by that way and laughing at the desperate crowd. What was the big deal anyway.. where I come from .. plenty of Duck to eat.. and I don’t even opt to eat it.. Pfft. (yup, yup.. back then I was young, ignorant and did not appreciate the subtle differences in food. Chicken? Duck? A bird is a bird. Same-same. Obviously now I know better.. being a food blogger and all.. ahem:P)

Anyway, with regards to the crowd, not evident here at all at Four Seasons, Cap square but maybe it’s just a waiting game.. the time will come.. who knows?

Taking off from yesterday's story on the Goose/Duck. Let me just say that I stand by my statement that Goose, for what it is, is overpriced here in Malaysia. Even here at Four season's at Cap Square, a quarter of a duck is priced at around RM18. Extremely affordable! You may like to read what Joe who's Constantly Craving and Masak Masak had to say about the duck at Four seasons Cap Square.

I like taking photos of tall buildings. Makes me feel small and powerless and insignificant. I could be squished into oblivion by the hand of God if he so chooses.. but he doesn't;) I am happy to be alive.

I like taking photos of graffiti. Reminds me that MAN is unique and creative.
Some say Vandalism. I say Art. Expression. Communication.
Cumi: Money & recognition for not-so-struggling Malaysian Spray Paint artist - most come from middle to upper income group.. spray paint bottles aren't cheap..

DSC03147
Anyway cap square is so quiet and boring at the moment. It can do with some color..

DSC03149
By the way, Clark Hatch has opened its latest branch here. How nice! The next time I get caught in KL peak hour, I will work out here instead of doing battle with the Traffic.

DSC03154 DSC03153 DSC03131
Other restaurants and bars at Cap Square. More to spring up eventually. Expensive rent here. I wonder if that's the U/ U-zen jap restaurant?

DSC03135
There is a mini shopping center/cinema/supermarket at Cap Square as well.
Cumi: Those chair designs seem out of place.

DSC03157
Some interesting items we found in the supermarket!
Cumi: An UNDERWORLD society lurks closeby. Where are the Lycan Jams?

Cumi: Dragon Slayers are out of work these days and have turned their business around to sauces..

Indulgence Ipoh

Art gallery in Europe? Nope!

Try Eatery in Ipoh... :)

Indulgence
Definition: luxury; gratification; pampering; excess; binge; splurge

I say AYE.. all of the above !!

That is precisely what happens at this wonderful restaurant called indulgence !

This place is not new.. but it amazes me every time i dine here, just how extensive the menu and different the food is! As most Ipoh folk hardly pay more than RM10 for breakfast out on the weekend, Indulgence is truly up market and in a dining class of is own.

Speaking to the founder and owner, one Ms Julie Song, the cuizine at indulgence is mainly Italian and Australian (hmmm... i didn't realise that Australian was a type of cuizine..?!)
Anyways, the broader classification - western. A lil of something for everyone .. if u like.. Or.. erm... rojak (?)
Also, what was interesting to me was that Indulgence also has hotel facilities (though limited - 6 rooms or so... ) for an amazing sum of like RM500 per night? Wow... Ipoh really needs some new 5 star hotels... and soon.

Anyway, presenting Indulgence.

Gorgeous open gardens and spaces ... makes me want to string a hammock and read a book under the shade of that humongous tree..

Colonial style dining areas.. all white and huge and fabulous..

We were totally psyched for an intense dining experience!

First, they served us bread.

They were oh, so cute.. !

They looked like doughnuts with a cherry tomato in the centre. Like a belly-button !

the lobster bisque was bursting with flavour but on the salty side.

Unfortunately the oysters were totally minuscule... so tiny we couldn't taste them! My colleague said that he would have to eat 50, in order to be any use to his wife... ! hahaha.

i don't remember Australian oysters being this small, to tell you the truth.. hmm...

the "duck foie gras" as the menu put it (got us a little perplexed coz we thought that FG was synonymous with goose.. but never mind) ... was not bad and went well with the orange cream sauce... however, it lacked that rich voluptuousness of goose FG which so often has me quaking at the knees... (or is that my blocked arteries... ??!! )

This was my favourite dish from indulgence ! Belgian mussels with white wine! Reminded me of that BELGO's in London! I love, love, love mussels! I love, love, love white wine! Double the pleasure, double the fun... indeed!

Too bad they didn't have Belgian beer to boot.

The lobster was over-cooked. We were not impressed :(

But dessert was spectacular.

Many customers come to Indulgence for Dinner, but end up having dessert 1st as it looks so tempting, at the front counter !!

the strawberries with chocolate were fantastic...

and the 'BLACK and WHITE" , which is a hot favourite, was tres scrumplitious... !

Totally worth our time...

The total bill for 2 persons was RM370.00. Pretty steep by KL standards, and needless to say, astronomically expensive by Ipoh standards.

However, indulgence has stood the test of time and is still packed every weekend (according to locals).

It just goes to show, expensive, italian-australian cuizine must certainly fills a dining void in Ipoh..

It certainly must.

Goosey Goosey.. Duck

girls with goose
Goosey, goosey, gander,

Whither dost thou wander?
Upstairs and downstairs
And in my lady's chamber.

old man
There I met an old man
Who wouldn't say his prayers;
I took him by the left leg,
And threw him down the stairs.

The On-line Pub and Burt Lancaster...

The minute I walked into the on-line pub....

and saw that lonesome train, on that lonesome track..

and that single, solitary table...

... I knew I was home. It was love at first sight:)

This place has been around a long, long time... not swanky.. not chic.. but it has that magic that makes you wanna stay and stay, and tarry awhile longer...

For a split second, I thought I would see cowboys with their horses bucking and guns ablazing...

hmmm....

Incidentally, I digress for a minute... speaking of guns ablazing.. my fav spaghetti western of all time just has to be, Gunfight at the O.K.Corral... ( I just watched it last week, again, for the 12th time). I never get bored.

I mean like .. WHO does not love Burt Lancaster.. ? Yea, Kirk Douglas is cool too but a far second (in my books anyway).

Look at him... so bloody brooding and sexy right? How come actors do not look like that anymore now a days huh???
Anyway, Marshall Wyatt Earp and Dr. John "Doc" Holiday are just the coolest and my favourite heroic characters of a bygone era...
If I was born in the 20's I would marry Burt Lancaster.. i would.. sigh...

ok... end of digression (and daydream) ... :):)

Anyway... I didn't see any cowboys at the on-line pub that night...

bar at on-line pub

But what i did see, was many friendly faces, and a really laid-back and warm, relaxed atmosphere which made the place feel different from your regular pubs in PJ and KL..

This is refreshing as some places around town can be just so impersonal now a days... its all about clearing tables and selling more beer... mmm... not cool!

Soon we got pretty hungry and decided to order some food.

....

.....

....

....

Let me just say... the menu looked promising...

But the food...

Was bloody awesome!

It is totally non-halal and as porky as they come... so brace yourselves for a carbo and lipid overload !

The luncheon meat was superb... fried to perfection and complemented with chili sauce. It was crispy (but not hard) and to die for...

hokkien mee

The Hokkien Mee can be ordered regular or with extra "chee yau char" (pork lard/fat ... whatever you want to call it.. )

We went with the extra lard, of course, coz we are self-destructive that way.. haha :P

wild boar curry

and we also had the wild boar curry (really, i hardly ever eat this, but have done so twice in the past 3 days.. it must be a sign.. but I am not sure what... )

The curry goes with toast and is out of this world...

And finally, the dish that sends goose bumps down my spine and reminds me of sitting in grandma's kitchen, eating grandma's cooking (sob.. brings a tear to my eye :P)

The corned beef ! Fried with cabbage! Gawd.. it's like i died and went to heaven...

If this is not wow-ing enough for you.. they also do corned mutton! How crazy is that??!

Totally mad! Fantastic!

By the end of the meal, we were left in a not unsimilar state to that of post-coital bliss...

Fully satiated, we were serenaded by the soulful sound, of a solitary voice, on a solitary guitar...

Yes, the last lonesome train, on that lonesome track.. is just about ready to leave town...
