Lets give it up for the talented Lakshmi! wait, i am not tom-tom-ing about self! I am referring to the talented needle works artist Lakshmi from SADALAS!

Before we get started with the interview, i would like to wish my dear MIL a very Happy Birthday and many happy returns of the day! What i have sewn for her on her b'day , stay tuned for more updates! Also please do not forget to add the link to your latest craft posts in the Linky at the end of this interview!

Without further Adieu, lets welcome Lakshmi!

So glad to have you here! Embroidery seems like your favorite hobby. How and from when did you develop interest in it?

Well Lakshmi, first of all thank you for featuring me in your blog. My mom used to do many crafts and she always used to encourage me to do crafts.  As in every south Indian home, my mom also taught me to do many crafts like crochet works, making bags with wires, tying flowers, rangolis etc. She herself is good in tatting and crocheting and bead works. Coming to embroidery I learnt it only after my marriage.

I learnt few basic stitches from my friends , I started doing embroidery for my daughter's dresses when she was 5 years old(now she is 20). At that time I was not  much interested in embroidery and was busy in taking care of my children. Later we shifted to Madanapalle and it was the peak time when Embroidery was in vogue and women were very talented there doing many embroidery works.   I got new friends and I learnt few stitches from my neighbors and friends. And one fine day I happened to meet a talented lady named Roja and I was totally dumbstruck seeing her embroidery works. She taught me some more stitches and since then I took embroidery seriously and was totally involved in it.  Roja was a great inspiration behind all my earlier projects. I learnt many stitches from newspapers, magazines, and from net as-well.

What is your favorite type of embroidery?

Surface embroidery is my favorite. I prefer simple works like thread works.  I mean I don't prefer to add glitters like beads, sequins, kundans, stones, but considering my daughter's likes and dislikes, I have to add some glitters to bring the bling, in order to please her. Of late, I took fancy in Brazilian embroidery. Since the threads used for this type of embroidery are not available in India,  I used cone threads for doing the Brazilian stitches and it is called dimensional embroidery. But My favorite is always Indian embroidery.

When did you start blogging and how the idea of having the blog happened?

I started blogging in February 2009. It was my online friends (from Orkut,Indus Ladies) who  suggested me to start a blog. They used to encourage me to start my own blog saying my embroidery works were unique. To be honest, I didn't know what a blog could be. After seeing few blogs I thought that it was impossible to me as my vocabulary was poor.  Neither I was  aware of the stitch name, type of embroidery nor its history. I was just doing embroidery to beautify my daughters dresses. One day while going through some of the blogs,  I felt that my ideas in embroidery were taken and posted in those blogs with wrong information.  I felt bad that if I could have documented properly this might have not happened. On that day  I made up my mind to start  my own blog to give the right information. At least I thought it was my responsibility . Thus my blog Sadalas was born. Now the responsibility is more as I got many readers from other parts of the world.

Your tutorials are so clear and easy to understand, thanks a lot for them. Do you take private classes as well in person?

For 2 years I used to transfer the designs on to the fabric and teach  one stitch per design . Later we shifted to Tirupathi and  I stopped doing for commercials. I don't take any classes now but teach  my friends and relatives

How do you balance family life and make time for the needle art, since it is more time-consuming?

Time management was not a big problem for me as we are only four in the family and  I am a house wife and more over I am a home bird. I don't prefer  watching TV or interested in going out with friends and partying. Moreover I used to have lot of time for myself after kids leave to school. Initially no one in the family liked me doing embroidery. They were more concerned about my health saying my eyesight might get damaged.  I explained to my hubby how much leisure time I will get and how  difficult it was for me to kill the time after kids go to school.  He understood  and from then on wards they didn't complain.  As kids are grown up now they started encouraging me and they all are very supportive. In fact my hubby brings me embroidery materials whenever he visits other cities.

Doing embroidery is like meditation to me.I feel it is food for my soul.Whenever I get tensed I just pic up my needle and keep on stitching silently  which brings peace to me. It has become a part of my life.

Well said Lakshmi, any art form which we love is truly therapeutic, isn't it. Where do you draw inspiration from for your embroidery designs?

Lot of things inspires me. Whenever I learn a new stitch,  I used to search for designs which are suitable for the stitch. In the process I  collected lot of designs from various sources like newspapers, magazines. I bought many books and also  collected them from internet.  Whenever I see a design my mind starts to think what all stitches I can incorporate on the design. Secondly the need. I liked to stitch  for my daughter and  see  how good she looks with my embroidery works. The happiness of seeing her smile on  wearing those dresses is not explainable. And again the money they charge outside for doing embroidery is more than 1000 bucks for simple work. By doing embroidery myself , I can save the money too..:)

As one can infer from your blog, that so many followers of your blog are from abroad, how does it feel to be able to share Indian needle art forms with people from other countries and also learn embroidery forms originating from their respective countries

You are true, I have many friends from abroad who appreciate my embroidery works. It is a great feeling that Indian needle art forms are being noticed and appreciated. Actually Indian women are very talented which goes unnoticed many a time. I feel that I am representing them through my blog. In this journey  I met  many embroiders  from other parts of  the world and got to know about various forms and types of embroidery.  I learnt many stitches from them . Brazillian embroidery is one among them.

What are the things that we can expect from your blog in near future?

Many ideas are there to do many embroidery projects and other craft works as well. Definitely I will blog about what all projects I do. I am also thinking to  give some more tutorials.  As you know embroidery is very time taking it is not so easy to complete them all in time.

Thank you Lakshmi
"Please convey mt regards and Birthday wishes to your mom-in-law."

Thanks for being here and also for your kind wishes to my MIL. So sweet of you and will surely convey your wishes to her.

Creative Blog Hop - Lets Welcome Neha from Steps Towards Crafting

 Welcome to

Creating Success around the World

The worldwide blog hop tour, that introduces you to creative people from all corners of the globe.

Hosts are :

All this month of January, Adithis Amma Sews will be hosting this Blog Hop for the Asia Region!  So be prepared to meet talented, crafty, interesting personalities every Wednesday!

Now it's our turn to meet Neha from Steps Towards Crafting, who excels in the field of Paper Crafts.

Hi Neha, I would like to extend you a warm welcome to our Creative Blog Hop. I am so glad to have you here. As one can see from you blog, you have a 'special place in your heart' for Paper Crafts, don't you, so share with us as to how it all started?

I love paper craft...Before past 7 months i used to make simple cards mostly having doodling on it....sometimes i tried pop ups and other shapes the attempts just led to wastage....from March/April 2010 when i joined my first office and i was free so in free time i starting searching handmade cards and card making techniques and the journey begin :) which is really never ending.

Which is your favorite out of all the paper crafts?

I love card making....and Paper quilling as technique most. i want to try many other techniques as well like Distressing, Punch craft, Stamping, Embossing but i havent yet bought all tools for them

Quilling is my favourtie too, though i am no way near to what you make :) What other new craft would like to add to your crafting Armour?

Trousseau packing, Making Bead Flowers, Soft Toys

What inspires your creations?

Hmm...my mood, the occasions and my fellow crafters :)

You already had an exhibition of your creations at your office. How was the response?

The response was amazing. It was first of its kind of exhibition ever in Aricent Gropu. The main thing is that seeing my efforts for exhibition many of my collegues and employees asked me about how i think of exhibition in office, how i initialted, to whom i talked and take permission from.

What's up in future? more such exhibitions, online store, what are your plans?
Exhibitions are there in the spectrum  for sure. I am not interested in opening online store as there are already many people and fellow crafters who are doing that. so i think if all will start selling then where will be the buyers :) My friends who love my craft suggest (or i should say force) me to open my own brand like Archie but i am not yet ready for it as ii will need a good investment and risks. So i am not yet prepared

Wish you all the best for your business proposals when the time is right for you. BTW do you have some exciting tutorials to share with our readers regarding the paper crafts on your blog?

Yes! i shared tutorial on making Photoframe on my blog. and people really liked it

Do you take personalized craft orders?
Yes i do take orders.

Do you have any craft item as memorabilia of your crafting days during childhood?

Hmm..my drawings...sply cartoons of Micky Minny Donald etc. and some handmade crafts like Fabric flowers and some recycled crafts like decorated rubber ball :)

Wow cartoon characters are every child's favourite, aren't they?! Whom do you draw inspiration from in the blog land as well as real world?

From my fellow crafters, from things around me, etc. :)

You can view all of my works @ - Steps Towards Crafting
[ As i am not able to select best among them :) ]

Thanks Neha, for your time and answers all our queries, it was indeed so nice to have you here, and i am sure, readers are off to check your blog by now.

Dear Readers, Stay tuned for an exciting finish to the Creative Blog Hop this month , as we have another talented craftswomen joining us next week to share their artistic sojourn!

Mindful Meanderings is truly addictive and from starting off as window to share her creative sojourns with darling daughter, it has grown to be a space where readers can share their creations, categorized as per the theme / flavor of the month.  Before we get started with the interview, i would like to let you know, that you can link up your latest projects in the LINKY at the end of the interview!

Lets get on with the interview, shall we ...

Warm welcome Shruthi. * Drum roll please * Thanks for being here @ Adithis Amma Sews
Shruthi, I am really happy to have you here on Adithis Amma Sews as part of Worldwide Creative Blog Hop. Welcome!

Over to Shruthi now ...

Thank you Lakshmi for inviting me to this Blog hop and introducing me to all your friends here..

Hello Everyone,
I'm Shruti, a software professional by day and an avid crafter by night. I blog over at Mindful Meanderings where I write about my family, our travel tales and all the crafty stuff I make.  I stay at Bangalore - the software hub in India with My Husband and my 5 year old daughter - Lil P.

Grab this button

What made you start a blog? Your inspiration?
Way back in 2009, I noticed that quite a few of my friends had taken to blogging about their kids.. My daughter, Lil p was also at an age when I felt the need to jot down her growing antics. It was also a time when my love for arts and crafts was reviving.. I took to blogging as a means to share the fun stuff with friends and family.

Did you expect Mindful Meanderings to be so popular when you started off?
Actually, no. It started off as an online diary and when people started commenting and appreciating some of the crafts that I made with Lil P, I was inspired to try some more crafts. The monthly Artsy-Craftsy challenge was born. Its been 2 years since and there has been no looking back.

Your blog shares your bond with your daughter as much as it shows your artistic sojourns! How does it feel to be looked upon as 'Ideal mum' who dons multiple hats, successful employee at an MNC, doting mom, avid artist, How do you manage time to pursue your crafting passion along side a full-time job + doting mom + caring wife!
I don’t sound to be preachy, but I truly believe each mom is an ideal mom.. an ideal mom for her kids. I do have my off days when nothing works as planned, but most days are good. I blog once my daughter sleeps and also use the scheduling facility of blogger a lot. At office I’m deeply passionate about the work I do there and once I am home, we unwind the day with a lot of kiddie crafts. I’m lucky to have good support staff - a good cook and a maid who help me focus on the things I love.

Your childhood crafts/hobbies?
My mom and grandmom both have artistic inclinations.. My mother used to paint elaborate bedsheets and curtains and many a times paint her own sarees.. So I guess it runs in the family. Further, my parents were both working professionals and every holiday they would enroll me into camps, art classes and music classes. More so because they wanted me out of their hair, I guess.* Laughs* After sometime,  I also developed an interest for it.. I won a few drawing competitions, Gave some drawing exams where I learnt techniques.. These days I love using Charcoal and Acrylics on canvas

Crafts which you would love to learn in future?
I have always wanted to try my hand at sewing and pottery.. J

How can one help their child to bring their creative talents to the fore, What is your tip to all those moms n dads out there ?
Keep trying new stuff with them, Give them a dedicated space and time for their creative endeavors. Make cards, let them get their hands dirty, use stuff lying around the house  - make a potato stamp , or paint a stone from your backyard and make it fun. Art can also be used to teach kids about our culture and Folk crafts.  It is equally important to display the crafts once your child has made them. Frame it, Print it, hang it where everyone can see it. Appreciation and creative freedom is the key to develop a child’s interest.

I know this is a tough one to choose, your personal favourite among your creations?
Ohh this is a tough one.. My personal favorite will have to be Lil P’s painting of us as a family for its sentimental value.. then the rainbow fish &thumbprint aquarium remains to be a family’s favorite.. I also love the Madhubani bookmarks & sock gnome key chains that I made for friends.

How has blogging helped you evolve as a person, what do you love the most about blogs?
I have definitely become more patient and my planning skills have improved a lot. As a mom, this blog has improved my relationship with my daughter. We have so much fun crafting together and creating our masterpieces. I also love the creative ideas that fellow mommy bloggers come up with. Its like an extended family :)

What is in store for Mindful Meanderings in future?
This year we have three challenges running...

Artsy-Craftsy Challenge Yummy Tummy Book-Nook

We have the monthly Artsy-Craftsy that focuses on a theme – This month’s theme is Create your own Van Gogh. The focus is to introduce children to the famous artists of the world.  The Yummy Tummy series featuring food stories and user submitted kiddie recipes every Wednesday & then the BookWorm Fridays  where we review a set of Childrens books every Friday.  Maybe another series that focuses on décor later this year. In short, I'm very excited about this and hope that you all will drop by at my blog  or FB page and come be a part of the Mindful Meanderings family.
