For the third time this year, Peter Capaldi graces the cover of the Radio Times as The Doctor. (He previously appeared back in May and again at the launch of series 8 in August).

It’s a curious photoshoot - not sure what those red and black hemispheres are all about!
But the picture does confirm something for me about the construction of his coat - something I had suspected and can now confirm.

Like they did with the August edition, this week’s iPad version of the Radio Times has some exclusive bonus material in the form of a 30 page special.

It plunders the extensive Radio Times archive of special photoshoots, so has some choice images on offer.

Doctor Who is back on our tv screens this coming weekend, so it goes without saying that Peter Capaldi is on the cover of the Radio Times, out today.

The Radio Times has a long tradition of commissioning its own special photoshoots when The Doctor graces its cover, and this is no exception.

The publication has recently launched a digital edition for tablets and mobile phones, so this week’s edition is a perfect hook to get subscribers to go for the digital edition over the newsstand one as it has some brilliant bonus features. More on some of that later.

The newsstand edition has a pretty pedestrian cover portrait of Peter (see above) but the digital one is animated, pulling in the cog motif from the new-look opening titles.

They have done a series of photoshoots, the main one accompanying the article depicts Peter in full costume inside a blue box - get it?

The three images here appear in the newsstand edition.

The digital editions of the Radio Times are priced at £1.99 each, but as a special offer the Doctor Who issue is just 99p!

Finally there is one more bonus gallery of images showing Peter reading the famous 1973 Radio Times Anniversary Special, which he personally praised in a letter to the Radio Times that year. His letter is reprinted to prove it!

Tagged onto the end of this gallery is the ENTIRE 1973 special - the first time I can recall it being officially available digitally.

This makes the introductory offer of 99p for the issue incredible valve for money!!!!

Last week we had The Sunday Times Magazine running a cover story interview with Peter Capaldi. This week it is the turn on the US entertainment press to get kick off their coverage.

Though it’s not for the week for the start of series eight, Doctor Who has grabbed a coveted front page of the US Entertainment Weekly.

With a special photo shoot done on 18th June 2014, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are seen on the slightly redecorated console room set.

Jenna’s costume seems to be from Time Heist, though it is not consistent with Peter’s shirt for that episode.

Press coverage - Empire magazine September 2014

Last week we had The Sunday Times Magazine running a cover story interview with Peter Capaldi. This week it is the turn on the film magazine, Empire to get kick off their coverage.

On sale from 31st July, the September issue has a nice article and photo shoot.

Sadly Doctor Who doesn’t make the cover - that goes to some film called The Hobbit.

Personally this is the most engaging photo shoot to date.

The Sunday Times was quite low-key; and Entertainment Weekly was a bit brief - but this has a bit more fun with the two lead stars.



Taken by David Venni, the photoshoot was on 17th June 2014.

Empire have released images of how the article appears, along with some alternatives and out-takes from the shoot.

There’s a fun set of three images, showing The Doctor on the empty set...

...then the TARDIS starts to appear...






...until it is near fully revealed.

As the broadcast dates for season eight draw near, there have been a number of magazine articles in anticipation of Peter Capaldi’s debut as The Doctor.

A few have special exclusive photoshoots of Peter in costume, and although they are not official BBC costume portraits, I feel they are worthy of a look.

The Sunday Times Magazine carries what it claims is the first interview with Peter Capaldi ahead of his debut as the Twelfth Doctor.

A similar interview appeared in the Telegraph Magazine just before Matt Smith began his era.

It goes without saying that The Doctor’s costume comes under scrutiny and there is a wonderful portrait shot of it on a mannequin stand.

There also features a shot of Peter putting on his Budd shirt.
I’ve taken a copy of the magazine along to the guys at Budds and they are thrilled to see their shirt so prominently displayed!

Finally Peter ties the laces to his Loakes, and he’s ready for action!

Space Oddity

Today’s Sunday Express has an interesting article, giving some apparent insight into the inspiration behind Peter Capaldi’s new costume.

Since it is the sunday tabloid press it should be taken with a pinch of salt, but if true it certainly gives some depth to a relatively simple outfit.
