FINALLY Peter get to wear his new velvet coat.
I am loving the silhouette of the coat, and above all the fabric used.

The velvet coat also seems to be bringing us back to a more tailored style of dressing, with the return of the Budd white shirt and a fitted waistcoat.

There looks to be some pretty weird stuff in this episode.

BBC promo pictures - The Girl Who Died

This week’s episode of Doctor Who will mark the first appearance this season of Game Of Thrones star Massie Williams, and she features prominently in the main publicity image for the episode.

We can see The Doctor continues to wear his dark Cromie coat, with the All Saints hoodie underneath.

Below this is the first outing for the Label Lab Negative Flowers design t-shirt, as well as some new trousers in a bold light check on dark navy.

This promo image is also the cover of this week’s Radio Times magazine.

If you look closely you’ll notice as well as knocking back the trees in the background, the two co-stars have been cut out and moved slightly closer to Peter to make a more compact composition.

Last week we had the carefully composited pack-shot representing Under The Lake, so I guess they decided not to do one for this week’s second part.

With less than a week to go before season 9 opens with a bang, the BBC have released a clutch of promo images from the first episode, The Magician’s Apprentice.

Having seen the episode they don’t give much away, and understandably steer away from the big spoilers that will melt the internet on Saturday night!

Series 9 - promo images IMPLEMENTED!!!

I always find it interesting how designers at magazine publishers can take the standard issue promo images and fashion them into eye catching covers that grab your attention on the newsstand.

So I thought I’d take a little time to compare the composited covers with their source images.

You can always rely on Doctor Who Magazine to come up with the goods when there’s some great images to use.

They cleverly created the classic back-to-back pose from two solo photocalls of The Doctor and Missy. You’d never know they weren’t in front of the camera together.

SFX Magazine on the other hand went for one of Peter Capaldi’s trademark attack eyebrows poses, cropping in tight for maximum impact.

The Big Issue opted to use the more melancholy stare of The Doctor in his sombre navy crombie ensemble, curiously doing their best to obscure the casual Label Lab t-shirt.

The latest batch of promo images for series 9 have been issued today, and we finally get to see some his new velvet coat in some detail.

Today the BBC released the first proper publicity still for the series nine opening adventure, The Magician’s Apprentice.

These things tend to creep up on you, but it’s only a few weeks until series nine hits our screens (working on the basis it will debut around the August Bank Holiday weekend).

Slowly the BBC publicity drive is creaking into action, with the announcement this week that Peter Capaldi, Jenna Colman and Steven Moffat will be at San Diego’s Comic Con - only a week or so away.

To publicise the announcement (i.e. publicise the publicity) Peter gave his first official interview about series nine to Entertainment Weekly.

Alongside the interview, they released the very first official publicity photo of the Twelfth Doctor in action.

And today the BBC released a second, very similar image via its YouTube channel, Doctor Who: The Fan Show.

It all looks very mood and mysterious.

BBC promo pics - Last Christmas

After the teaser picture a couple of weeks ago, the BBC have issued a full set of official promo pictures and portraits.

Here are the images The Doctor appears in.

With exactly one month to go until the Christmas Special, the BBC have released the episode’s title - Last Christmas - and a teaser picture showing the lead players in costume.

The Doctor wears a hoodie, possibly the same one as seen in Time Heist.

In the final set of promo pics for series 8, we get another good selection of reference pictures.

So, until the Christmas special, that’s it for BBC promo pictures for 2015.

BBC promo pics - Dark Water

I can’t believe we are already at the start of the season finale, which means it’s time to see the publicity still that accompany its screening.

There’s the usual fare of sanitised photoshopping, accompanied by a host of images from the London filming around St Paul’s Cathedral.

These scenes were shot on what proved to be the hottest day of 2014, so you gotta feel for those poor guys in the Cybermen suits - they must have been a stone or two lighter by the end of the shoot.

Being a hot sunny day, it means the lighting pulls out a lot of detail on The Doctor’s costume, where it would normal fall into a black mush of shadows.

For once you can clearly see the colour difference between the dark navy blue of the coat and the black of the waistcoat over the charcoal navy colour of his trousers.

You also get a tiny glimpse of the coat’s lining, which isn’t a consistent bright red you might think, but has a slight iridescent quality.

If you know what you are looking for, these are superb reference pictures.
