Recovery of a watch from the Battlefield.
--On Thursday last James McConuick, escuted to be a member of the Texas Rangers, was arrested at the instigation of James L. Hicks, of the 6th Alabama regiment, and carried before Assistant Provost Marshal Alexander, charged with purloining a silver lover watch. It appeared from the narration of the complainant that the defendant, after getting the watch, had threatened to cut him with a bowie knife if he followed him to get the money for it. Officer New, of the detective corps, was directed to take the criminal before the Head of Police yesterday morning. After the examination was concluded and that functionary was about to commit McCormick for the larceny, the detective happened to look at the watch, and recognized it as one belonging to his brother, Charles R. New, acting Orderly Sergeant of company H. 1st Virginia regiment, who was killed at the battle of Seven Pines on the 31st of May. Hicks acknowledged that he had obtained the watch from off the body of a dead soldier, and readily gave it up, expressing himself satisfied at being able to restore it to those who could prize it as a memento. McCormick was sent to jail for ten days, during which time the Head of Police will determine the measure of his guilt and the amount of punishment to be allotted to him.
