Necessity of vigilance.

It is to be hoped that the wonderful success of our troops in the late grand battle will not reduce the dangerous result of leading to any relaxation of vigilance or any such contempt of the enemy as will induce us to omit a single precautionary measure which may be necessary against a most artful, subtle and malignant foe. The glorious result should inspire every Southern soldier with the most entire and perfect confidence; but that confidence should be allied to the most unslacking vigilance and the most untiring energy in preparing for another encounter. To the Providence of God. blessing our own efforts and bringing up at the very nick of time the reinforcements that turned the tide of battle, is due our whole success, and upon that, with our own best efforts, should be our whole reliance.
