Dr. Winship's New lecture.
--We find in the Boston Traveler the condensed report of the topics treated in a new lecture of Dr. Geo. B. Winship, of Massachusetts. He advocated keeping the head up, the chest expanded; sleeping in a room through which there is a draft of air, after getting gradually accustomed to it; exercising with dumb bells, or something similar, every day or two, or three times a week, from twenty to forty minutes a day; avoiding all adulterations, and everything that has come in contact with zinc, lead or other poisonous substances; performing ablutions twice a week, and lifting to strengthen the muscles. The speaker gave an account of progress in lifting until last May, when he succeeded in lifting 1,208 lbs, and by means of harness apparatus he lifted 1,900 lbs. In a few weeks he thinks he will lift 2,000 lbs., his aim being to get so as to lift 3,000 lbs., be fore a great while, thus verifying the prophecy of Sir David Brewster that could be shown to be the weight a medium sized man could raise. After the lecture, Dr. Winship gave some examples of his strength. He lifted 1,032 lbs. dead weight with his hands, raised himself by the little finger of each hand in a leather strap, in one case raising himself up for about a minute. He concluded by lifting a barrel of flour, weighing 215 pounds, direct from the floor and placing it on his shoulder.
