Wilkinson's send in The Crane 30 Jan 2011
If you are wondering what's in the sky over Kenilworth today - it's The Wilkinson Crane. Recruitment for the new store ended yesterday, wiK are waiting for an update to see if applications for Jobs are still open. For any kids (or adults) who want to know all about Cranes, visit Dewsbury and Proud. Update: It seems the crane was gone as soon as it came.

Wilkinson in Station Road
NEW STORE OPENING on or around Tuesday 19 April 2011
Wilkinson, Station Road, CV8 1JD
www.wilkinsonplus.com www.wilko.co.uk
Work started a few days ago to refit the new Wilkinson Store in Station Road. Wilkinson were unable to provide any information about this new store on 22 December 2010, but another email has been sent for an update. In the meantime, the building today is just an empty shell, so it will be a few months before opening. Will update when I know. UPDATE: wiK has been told by Wilkinson to see the Job Centre for any recruitment for this store - no specific dates or vacancies details were given by Wilkinson.Wilkinson, Station Road, CV8 1JD

Wilko is coming to Station Road - what do you think?

NEWS STORE OPENING on or around Tuesday 19 April 2011

So, it appears that Wilkinsons have put in two planning applications (App One and App Two) to occupy the old Budgens Store in Station Road. So what does this mean for Kenilworth?

So, it appears that Wilkinsons have put in two planning applications (App One and App Two) to occupy the old Budgens Store in Station Road. So what does this mean for Kenilworth?
Budgens closed it's doors in March 2005, the building has stood empty ever since. So how will this affect the neighbouring businesses? We have Buyrite opposite, Robert Dyas in the old Woolworths building, WH Smith and The Handyman Centre all within a two minute walk.
For me, it comes down to seeing if Wilko sell anything that existing Kenilworth Businesses do not already sell. Of course, getting the right product at the right price is always a consideration in these hard times. wiK is a digital first, so comments are always welcome - and being open and honest about it, wiK has many many readers now and NOT enough writers. So, new media like social media is a conversation, so let's have one. If you were the owner of Buyrite (or the others) - would you be pleased or worried that Wilko are setting up shop?

I am the owner of The Little Clothes Horse children's store in Warwick Road. I think there are positives and negatives to Wilkinsons coming to Kenilworth. Another empty unit being filled in the town has got to be a good thing hasn't it?
Kenilworth should be very proud of the number of empty retail units it has in town, as compared to other neighbouring shopping destinations we have very few. We are a bustling town with a variety of shops that offer a wide range of products. There have been several new businesses open in town since we opened in October last year and I think that is fantastic!
Wilkinsons may offer some duplicated products to what some retailers may already sell, my own store in fact, but I think that the quality products that I sell and the good customer service that we provide will be enough to convince people to continue shopping with us. Small independent retailers often offer a personal shopping service and products different to main retailers and that is what makes then successful. Customers appreciate the quality service and are often very supportive of independent retailers.

The Kenilworth Chamber of Trade
What's in Kenilworth? became whatsinKenilworth and then became wiK - shortened name, but the aim is just the same - to answer the question What is in Kenilworth?.
So here goes for whatsin The Kenilworth Chamber of Trade - they have a website and a twitter page, they say (from their website) they have been established for 15 years and are the voice of business owners and retail traders in Kenilworth. Their aims are to: Promote all businesses within Kenilworth, Communicate local business opinion to decision making bodies and Provide networking opportunities for their members.
Sounds great, so how many members do they have? Well, I took a walk from the clock tower Abbey End down Warwick Road, into Station Road, Talisman Square and then back to Warwick Road ending at St John's Church - I counted 163 walk in businesses alone - shops, pubs and the odd guest house. Then I searched The Chamber of Trade's website directory and came up with just 53 businesses - I thought there would be more members than that. wiK has 270 listings already.
If you want to see for the Chamber of Trade list yourself, here it is (if they are errors, please email the chamber of trade or info@whatsinkenilworth.com:

Louise Want from The Feldon Veterinary Centre, Warwickshire, was awarded the prestigious title of ‘Vet Nurse of the Year 2010’ at the Petplan Veterinary Awards - the Oscars of the veterinary profession.
Louise managed to gain the winning edge over her competitors by being an excellent role model for her team of nurses, and through the constant support that she provides to her colleagues and clients. The independent panel of judges also found Louise to be a great inspiration to all and having worked in the veterinary profession for 30 years, she is as passionate and dedicated, as when she first started.
“I’m completely shocked! It’s fabulous to win, I’ve been in the industry for 30 years this year and it’s such a special way to celebrate it. In fact it may have been the reason why I was nominated. It’s an amazing award, and great to be acknowledged.”
Alison Andrew, Petplan’s Marketing Manager, said she was thrilled by the number and quality of nominations they received for this category and that Louise was a very deserving winner.
