Vintage Sinful Colors Medusa

Here's one from the archives. Remember when Sinful Colors used to come in this round type of bottle? I had a whole bunch of them back in the day, and maybe I'm just biased because this is how they looked when I first started buying them, but I prefer the old-style bottle and logo. The new bottle is just so... odd. And bulbous.

Sinful Colors Nail Enamel in Medusa. Medusa is a super rich dark mahogany brown. It has red, brown and gold shimmer that glows and smolders like embers within the blackened brown base. This is one of those colors that looks dark on the edges and light and glowing in the center.

I'm kinda obsessed with this type of finish. It's just so fascinating to me. Red, brown, blue, purple, doesn't matter what color it is. If it has this finish, I want it!

Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear Pumpkin Spice

My first Halloween polish of the year! I'm so excited!

Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear in Pumpkin Spice. This is the polish all by itself, four coats. It is very sheer, good for layering, but looks just fine by itself. It's a shiny pumpkin orange glitter suspended in a murky green-grey base. It's sort of similar to China Glaze Ick-A-Body:

But not a dupe. China Glaze Ick-A-Body has a greener base and a lot more glitter.

Here it is layered (two coats) over my existing Finger Paints Cordur-Orange mani. Looks great over orange.

This is one coat of Pumpkin Spice over Sinful Medusa. Medusa is a rich brown shimmer and it really brings out the orange-ness of the glitter.

Then I had to try it over OPI Black Tie Optional (thanks for the layering suggestion, Anne-Marie!), which is a dark purple/grey duochrome color and it looks really nice with little glints of purple shining through.

Sure, it's a little sheer, but it doesn't bother me. It's called PUMPKIN SPICE!! And I have this thing about pumpkins.

Speaking of pumpkins, you'll never guess what I have. Okay, well, I suppose I gave it away by saying "speaking of pumpkins," but... I still have a pumpkin from last Halloween! I know, I can't believe it lasted this long. It was the Halloween pumpkin... Then it was the Christmas pumpkin... The Valentine's pumpkin... The St. Patrick's pumpkin, the Easter pumpkin and even the 4th of July pumpkin... And just this morning I noticed it starting to get its first soft spot... Doesn't look like it'll make it to another Halloween, but wow... I bought that thing in mid-October 2010 and here we are, end of July 2011...

"New" Sinful Colors Glitters for Fall 2009

I say "new" in quotations like that because even though they were just added to the displays, I feel like I've seen these before. Some of these might have been renamed, or maybe re-released from the old Sinful days when all the colors were awesome and came in round bottles and not this weird onion shape... Anyway, here are the ones I picked up- not sure if this is all of them or not!

All About You. A really fascinating gold combination- it has very small, fine warm gold glitter and then some slightly larger sized coppery gold glitter. Really gorgeous in the bottle. It looks cool on the nail, too, but it seems to lose some depth. I think this is four coats, Sinfuls are usually really sheer.

Call You Later. Light, yellowy-golden green glitter and larger medium grass green glitter. I love this! Green glitter! This is a great layering glitter because it's not too dense to cover the base color. My friend loved this one over purple on me. I prefer it alone, but there are so many layering possibilities. This is four coats, it is sheer.

Frenzy. A red-toned purple and blue glitter combination. This is similar to a lot of other polishes, but this one also has its own distinct features. Frenzy is an even mixture of the two colors and the two glitters are also the same size. This is three coats, it's slightly less sheer than the others.

I Love You. Sweet merciful crap. PURPLE GLITTER. Real purple glitter!!!! With slight duochrome!!! This is a color I've been waiting for for a long time. This is very fine, shiny purple glitter with slight gold duochrome in a deep purple jelly base. So many "purple glitter" polishes I buy end up being gross grey-lavender glitter in a murky grey base (LA Girl and Nubar come to mind first) but this one is all purple. It is glorious. We're best friends now. Three coats.

I Miss You. Small silver glitter and a sprinkling of larger holographic glitter in a mauve-purple jelly base. This one isn't purple enough for me but I still like it. I'll never reject a glitter! I bleed glitter. Anyway, this one is also probably better suited for layering as it is rather sheer. I think this is three or four coats. I did these swatches a while ago and my memory isn't what it used to be.

Nail Junkie. Turquoise-aqua sheer base with fine silver glitter and a touch of larger holographic glitter. It's so beautiful. Like sparkling ocean water. I just love to pick up the bottle and stare at it. Why yes, I am easily amused! But seriously. This is awesome. It looks great layered over pretty much everything, and if you can stand having visible nail line it looks good on its own as well. This is four coats.

I'm really not a fan of Sinful's formula, but I put up with it because they have such great colors. I've always been a Sinful fan- I used to have a huge stockpile of Sinful in the 90s. I miss the 90s. Anyway, the formula. It's a little on the thick side and also sheer for these shades so it can be a tricky combination. Let each coat dry for at least a minute before the next coat to avoid that weird gloppy smudgy thing that happens when you try to apply too much thick polish. These also take quite a while to dry. They set pretty quickly with quick dry topcoat but are still dentable for over an hour. When layering, these polishes have no formula problems. One coat will dry quickly and be a good texture. It all depends on how you plan to wear these.

Another score for Sinful. Anyone who gives me glitter gets a gold star in my book.

Sinful Colors

Another drugstore brand that I really like is Sinful Colors. I used to have a lot of Sinful polishes in the 90's, so I have a soft spot for Sinful. Especially Sinful in the old bottle.

I haven't been able to swatch much of my Sinful collection yet, but I did take some bottle pictures which show the colors very accurately.

Before I post the pictures, I'd like to say one thing about Sinful...

The formula is TERRIBLE. It's not just that they're either too thick and globby or too thin and runny, they're all very sheer. It's very hard to apply these polishes. Sheer polishes with bad formula are especially difficult because you have to figure out a way to do enough coats to build opacity without making a gigantic clumpy streaky mess.

There are a few of them that don't give me any trouble- Dream On, Tucson, San Francisco. The rest are a pain in the rear.

However, the colors are so lovely and unique, the trouble is usually worth it.

I am missing a few bottles... They are in my house somewhere, but hell if I know where they are...

Please click the images to enlarge. These are much better in full size.

Sparkle, Heartache, Broadway Star, Treasure Island, Pearl Harbor, Kansas

Hottie, UFO, Pinky Glitter, Pink 4 Ever, Pink 4 Ever (version 2), Green Ocean

LOL, you didn't think I was serious, did you? Me, the Queen of Chemicals???

Well, one thing I *am* going to do is post pictures of green polish. There are not enough green polishes in the world, but I've rounded up the greens from my collection and I'm going to post them here for all to admire.
