Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer Collection for Summer 2012 Swatches and Review

Haven't seem chrome-finish polishes in a while, have we? I can't remember the last chrome collection that came out. These new Deborah Lippmann mirrored chrome polishes are a little different than the chromes of the past, especially since they have the added perk of being multichromes instead of single-color metallics.

Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer in Private Dancer

Deborah Lippmann Private Dancer. This one is a shape-shifter for sure. In dim lighting, it's a deep yet bright blue-toned purple with a metallic, near-chrome finish. In daylight, it flashes between lighter red-toned purple and the darker blue-toned purple from before, but it also has green and gold duochrome. It looks completely different every time I look at it. I thought it was going to be fairly dark, a Cadbury purple color, but it's lighter on the nail than it looks in the bottle. Also, for once, it's named after a song I like. Tina Turner is bad ass.

Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer in Sugar Daddy

Deborah Lippmann Sugar Daddy. This one was a surprise. I was expecting to like this the least because I thought it would be light and champagne-colored, but it's actually my favorite of the three. It has a warm champagne pink chrome base and some very strong green and gold duochrome. The finish is the closest to true chrome and the duochrome flash is intense. Makes me think of a sheerer, very toned-down version of Nubar Wildlife (gold/pink/green multichrome). I absolutely love this. It's the most unique of the three, and if any of these are worth $18, it's this one. Also, these polishes are usually named after songs, but I'm not sure which Sugar Daddy this is named after. My mind goes either to Tom Jones or Hedwig and the Angry Inch, so....

Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer in Swagga Like Us

Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us. I thought this was going to be a Chanel Péridot dupe and I was starting to regret ordering it, but when it arrived, it turned out not to be, so I was relieved! This is a very warm golden chrome base with orange/gold, green, aqua and blue duochrome. It's warmer and has a different base color than Péridot, but otherwise they're similar duochrome-wise.

A cool tiger-striped pattern formed in my bottle while I was swatching. Thought it was neat.

I did a little side-by-side comparison to show the similarities between Swagga Like Us and Péridot:

Left to right (pinkie to index finger):
Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us (three coats)
Chanel Péridot (three coats)
Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us (three coats)
Chanel Péridot (three coats)

Not duplicates, but pretty similar. One's warmer than the other. Same duochrome colors.

The formula on these was good. Old-style chromes had a tendency to be really watery, but these didn't have that problem. They were very thin and a little runny, but not out of control. They applied smoothly and without pooling as long as I did thin coats. I did need to be mindful of brushstrokes, but the majority of them disappeared as the polish dried. These are pretty sheer and I needed to do three coats for opacity. They dry very quickly and look chrome-like even without topcoat.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with these. I wish the purple was a little darker and more chrome-like, and even though Swagga Like Us isn't an exact copy of Chanel Péridot, I don't know if I'd buy it again knowing just how similar they are. Actually, I'd buy Swagga Like Us over the Chanel if I had the choice, just because it's cheaper and the color is a little more saturated, plus the warmth makes it slightly easier to wear. Sugar Daddy is perfect, wouldn't change anything about it. If I had to choose just one polish from the collection to buy, it would be that one.

I ordered mine directly from Deborah Lippmann's website, but these are also available right now from Neiman Marcus.

Deborah Lippmann Get This Party Started Set Fall 2011

This is an interesting new set from Deborah Lippmann. It contains three polishes- one bottle of the incredibly popular and aptly named multicolored glitter, Happy Birthday, plus two new colors which use the Happy Birthday glitter in different jelly bases.

Left to right: Happy Birthday, Candy Shop, Forget You.

Worth noting: The box that this set comes in is really nice. It's no flimsy cardboard throwaway afterthought of a box, it's very sturdy, quite attractive and can be used for storing the set safely.

Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday. The classic. Different shapes, sizes and colors of birthday party glitter in a clear base. This color has become shockingly popular. Almost every nail enthusiast I've talked to either has this, has a dupe of it or has it on their wishlist. It's a really cute polish, very festive looking. It really is evocative of the fun, happy, confetti-filled "birthday party" image. This glitter is dense enough to wear alone (I have two coats on here) or to layer.

Deborah Lippmann Candy Shop. How great is this?! This is the perfect pink frosted cupcake with sprinkles color. Doesn't it look like sprinkles? It also reminds me of confetti cake. Such a happy color. This is the Happy Birthday glitter in a milky bubblegum pink jelly base. The jelly base gives this color more depth than just layering Happy Birthday on top of pink. I have seen people layer a sheer or jelly polish over Happy Birthday to get this look, but I haven't tried that technique for myself yet. Regardless, this is an amazingly cute polish and it makes me smile when I look at it.

Deborah Lippmann Forget You. Forget You has the Happy Birthday glitter, but this time it's in a black jelly base. I love the way the glitter pieces look suspended in the black jelly; if you enlarge the pictures you can get a better look at what I'm talking about. I much prefer the look of the glitter mixed with the black to the look of glitter layered over black. Happy Birthday and Candy Shop make me think of birthday parties, but Forget You makes me think of New Year's Eve... Or possibly even a bachelorette party.

The formula on this is what I expected from such chunky glitter. Happy Birthday is quite thick but the other two are considerably thinner. Still thick, though. All would benefit from a little polish thinner just to make them go on more smooothly. Still, I didn't have any trouble applying apart from getting the glitter evenly distributed. I did two coats of all and I'm happy with the way they look with only two. Drying time is good and they dry oddly (though not completely) smooth for such huge glitter. I'm wearing topcoat in these pictures but they didn't require more than one coat.

Overall, I love this set. I already had Happy Birthday so I sorta wish there was a third new color in the set instead of Happy Birthday, but maybe that's an invitation to franken mine... Hmmm... And speaking of frankenpolish, I'm sure that Candy Shop and Forget You could be frankened pretty easily using Happy Birthday (or one of its clones), clear polish and pink/black polish. But still, the ones in this set are perfect. I think they look amazing on the nails and I've always loved Lippmann's fancy-looking bottles.

These are sold together as a set; $42 on LippmannCollection.com. Happy Birthday by itself is $18.

Lippmann News (Fall, Winter, Anniversary 2011)

A little preview of upcoming Deborah Lippmann collections, fresh from my inbox!

WARM UP WITH DEBORAH LIPPMANN’S FALL 2011 SHADES

I have worked directly with some of the world’s top fashion designers on everything from ad campaigns to fashion shows. When I set out to select nail looks for the fall 2011 collections, I noticed a common theme among all of my collaborators: warmth. The clothes featured vivid, lush earth tones—think lush greens, rich reds and intense golds.

I wanted to capture a similar heat and earthiness in the accompanying polishes, but with an added punch. BILLIONAIRE, a moody hunter green, BRICK HOUSE, a shimmering rust, and SINGLE LADIES, a flirtatious red, all have warm undertones, which give them a beautiful intensity, but also have a jewel-like quality so they really make nails pop.

SHADE DESCRIPTIONS

Billionaire: moody hunter green (creme)

Brick House: shimmering rust (shimmer)

Single Ladies: flirtatious red (creme)

XOXO,
Deborah

Just in time for the holiday season,
Deborah Lippmann Gets the Party started

Nothing says ‘Party’ like the magnetic sparkle of glitter. So for the biggest party season of the year, I’ve created shades that truly dazzle. Get This Party Started, a set of three glitters, was inspired by the overwhelming demand for my best selling Happy Birthday, a glittery party in a bottle. The set includes Happy Birthday, along with two new variations of the sparkling shade: Forget You and Candy Shop. They’re both packed with the same unique hexagon-shaped glitter that gives Happy Birthday its magnificent glint, only Forget You has a sheer black base and Candy Shop a bubblegum pink.

I love how festive all three look and feel, whether wrapped a round a champagne glass or peeping out of a glamorous pump. But what I truly love the most: how a few coats of any shade instantly transform you into the life of the party.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: a party in a bottle (glitter)
FORGET YOU: party all night (glitter)
CANDY SHOP: bubblegum pink (glitter)

XOXO,
Deborah

SHOW WORTHY

Deborah Lippmann’s new shade, STORMY WEATHER, is a collaboration with fashion
designer Narciso Rodriguez.

Usually Narciso requests a nude nail to complement his minimalist designs, but for fall 2011 around he wanted something bolder—a color with strength and edge to offset both his collection and the softness of the hair and makeup. For the perfect custom finish, I mixed (and mixed) a new shade by hand in just 24 hours. The final product: an edgy granite that emanated power and intensity. The models who walked the show (and who rarely, if ever, comment on the nail color) gushed over the shade. And so STORMY WEATHER was born an edgy granite (crème) for a strong fall statement.

XOXO,
Deborah

Deborah Lippmann Summer 2011 Collection Swatches and Review

This Deborah Lippmann collection surprised me. At first glance, only the blue (I Know What Boys Like) caught my eye and the rest looked nice but nothing special. When I saw them in person, I knew I was totally wrong. They are all special.

Girls Just Want To Have Fun. This is a light, bright pink-toned coral pseudo-jelly. I say pseudo-jelly because it's too opaque to be a true jelly but somehow is still has that squishy jelly-finish look. My skintone makes this pull a little more orange than it looks in the bottle- it seems more pink toned until I put it on. This is really fresh and pretty looking and I love the squishy candy-like look of it.

I Know What Boys Like. This is just an amazing color, I can't even tell you. It's the most fascinating shape-shifting sort of color... In some lights it looks like a dusty deep periwinkle blue, but in other lights it has a distinct purple tone to it. It has a softness, a sort of dusty/muted look that makes it not so bright and in your face as expected, but it's such an unusual shade that it's still an attention grabber.

Lara's Theme. This is an orange creme. It's a medium saturated orange with some warm yellow tones to it, and it's bright but not neon. It looks a little darker on the nail than it does in the bottle. This is the one that really blew me away. I like orange polish to begin with so I knew I was going to like this, but I wasn't expecting it to be this good. For one, it's the perfect year-round orange- it's not obnoxiously neon or too Halloweeny (as much as I love neons and Halloween) so it doesn't seem limited to one season. But the best part is the formula. It's completely opaque in one coat. One-coaters are pretty rare. This is extremely dense and pigmented, and if there ever was an orange worth $16, it's this one.

Yellow Brick Road. This is a sunny yellow jelly. I know what you're thinking.... yellow jelly. That sounds like a disaster. I thought that at first, with images of freaky, stained looking yellow-tinted nails in my head. But, happily (and surprisingly), this polish works. It's fantastic. It's not as sheer as I thought it might be, but it's sheer enough to maintain that squishy, not-quite-opaque jelly depth without visible nail line. The end result is this bright, cheerful custard yellow creme that just makes you want to smile. This is only three coats and you can't see nail through it. Doesn't it look so happy? Like Marshmallow Peeps, or even better, real baby chicks with fluffy yellow feathers.

The formula on these was perfect. Each was different but provided no difficulties in application. Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Yellow Brick Road are three coats, Lara's Theme and I Know What Boys Like are two. All were on the thick side but applied evenly without drips or bubbles. Good dry time, good wear time, zero complaints on the formula.

These were not the plain cremes I thought they would be. The fun, vibrant color combined with the jelly finishes on some and the super creamy density of the others really keeps these from being ordinary. I'm impressed with the formula, the colors and, as always, with the gorgeous bottles. They really feel like a luxury polish. For $16 a piece, they better feel luxurious! These do. I'm impressed.

These are available now at all the various places that sell Deborah Lippmann / Lippmann Collection, or directly from Deborah's website. I do not believe any of these shades are limited edition; feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Deborah Lippmann Spring 2011 Swatches and Review

This year's spring shades from Lippmann are soft and subdued.

Naked. This is a soft, milky neutral beige. You could call it nude, fleshy... Naked, really. It's almost my perfect 'Mannequin Hands' shade, but it's just a touch too tan. It can be worn sheer, but I think it looks best opaque like I'm wearing it here (three coats).

And the star in this spring duo....

Glitter In The Air. What can I even say about this color? I'm totally in love. Yes, I am in love with a sheer polish. It's true. I would have never expected this. Let me describe it. It's a milky, cloudy, gentle baby blue jelly. Very sheer. Sprinkled throughout the blue jelly base are shiny bits of large and small pink and blue glitter. It's not a dense glitter and you won't have full coverage with it, but that's the beauty of it. It reminds me of cotton candy and cupcake sprinkles and magic. It's just so romantic and dreamy looking. I'm wearing three coats and it's really sheer. It looks even better at four thin coats but I didn't get a picture of that. If you prefer a more opaque look (or just hate visible nail line), you can easily layer it over pastel blue or a white creme.

The formula on these was decent. They both start out sheer and can be layered for more coverage. With the texture of the formula on these polishes, it's best to wait a minute or so in between coats so that you don't get that goopiness that some sheer polishes can get when applying. Drying time was a little long, but not horrible.

Naked is nice, but Glitter In The Air is magical. It's a fantasy polish. Sheer polishes, especially sheer glitters, aren't something I usually like, but this one is different. It looks squishy and soft, like candy and marshmallows. And... unicorns!!

Deborah Lippmann Holiday 2010 Shades - Boom Boom Pow and Today Was A Fairy Tale

I know that I'm a little late posting these as it's now a few weeks into the new year, but there's nothing that requires one to love these only during Winter...

Deborah Lippmann has once again created some magnificent glitter shades. I'm loving this. A high end brand who appreciates the glitter.

Boom Boom Pow. This one is said to contain real 24 karat gold. It has large gold hex glitter and some tiny delicate gold sparkles in a clear base. I'm betting that the 24k gold is those little glimmers of gold in the base. While this polish would be great for layering, I personally prefer it when worn alone, like this. Very magical looking.

Today Was A Fairy Tale. Like Boom Boom Pow, this one also contains a fancy ingredient: Virgin Diamond Powder. What is Virgin Diamond Powder? Well, it's an abrasive made of micronized diamonds and it's used for polishing. Is there a benefit to having it in nail polish? Who knows. All I know is it's cool to say, oh, my nail polish has diamonds in it. Anyway, this shade is a sheer grey base with large and small silvery blue glitter. The base tints the glitter a bit and it has a cloudy sky sort of effect. Very pretty. Excellent for layering:

Deborah Lippmann Today Was A Fairytale (one coat) over Zoya Dove. See how the grey base tints the polish a little? It deepens the color and adds a slight blue hue. So pretty.

Deborah Lippmann Today Was A Fairytale (one coat) over Illamasqua Obsess. Over such a bright color like Obsess, it really changes. It deepens and mutes the base polish and it makes the glitter stand out more- more contrast between light and dark.

The formula on these was good. They're sheer glitters so they need at least three coats- I'm wearing three coats in these pictures. They're a little thick so you should wait a few minutes between coats if you can, it will help make a smoother application. Drying time is average and removal isn't too bad for a glitter.

Because of the fancy ingredients like real gold and diamond, these are more expensive than the average Lippmann polish; they're $20 each.

Do you have these? What do you think of them?
