Rescue Beauty Lounge The Bloggers' Collection 2.0 Swatches and Review

 The Bloggers' Collection 2.0
 (collection provided for review)

"We’re here to finally celebrate The Bloggers’ Collection 2.0. This hypnotically long voyage started back in January 2012.  Truthfully, I love collaborating with expert lacquer aficionados because I am guaranteed that they will take me on a journey that raises the bar even higher (even though there's the chance that I'll surf and crash hard while riding those high waves of technical difficulties).
Every color has its own destiny, and although it may stray from the original creator’s vision, the bumpy ride is always worth it. Scrangie, Kellie, Pammy, Sam, Rie and I are proud and excited—can you hear our thumping heartbeats? My sincerest gratitude goes out to all of them for sharing their creative globe-trotting, nail polish-making paths—I  had a blast and hope you all did too."

 Rescue Beauty Lounge Scrangie 2.0
Naturally, I tagged Queen Scrangie first, who can forget what we’ve made together already? And, of course, she wanted that elusive nail polish-goliath. A black oil slick with a multifaceted ring visible in low light. I, too, have had this effect on my wish list for as long as I can remember. We tried unconventional raw materials that failed miserably after months of mixing. After six intense months, the end result is a polish that contains isolated oil rings, it is the color of an oil base that floats on water with rainbow sparkles, it shifts from shade to shade depending on the light that is cast on it.

 Rescue Beauty Lounge Kellie Gonzo
Kellie luves her sparkles and glittahs. She wanted a pink-coral happiness that captures her bright, sunny, and bubbly personality; a color that shoots out with her warm-hearted twinkles. At first, I made her the most intense bright coral that we both fell hard for, but then, its legal neon pigments started separating, making the polish a big, hot mess. This color took the longest to color match, it pushes on the edge of bright pink coral without adding any neon pigments— and I can feel Kellie’s smile beaming from the bottle—it’s so her.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Liberty
From the opposite time zone on the other side of the globe, Pammy and I worked together on Facetime to race against the clock. She has a true-blue infatuation with Pizzicato and she demanded   Pizzicato's mint-green sister. Of course, I had to add a pinch of blue shimmer here and there to make it—sister worthy. Our most hilarious and surprising moment came when it was time to name her polish— she actually choked! Yup, our Pammy, one of my favorite authors.  She thought naming the polish would be easy and fun—she now knows my pain. But this name is spot on—I see an image of the majestic Lady Liberty gleaming with reflective glass-flecks, shimmering on a warm, sunny day while I stand on the deck of the Staten Island Ferry, my hair blowing wildly against the wind,     mesmerized by her presence and the symbol for what she represents.

 Rescue Beauty Lounge NailsandNoms
If you’ve read Rie’s blog, you know she’s an orange lover and the  lady wished to have a Turquoise shimmer or glitter mixed into a  bright orange base. However, the vision she had in mind made my     already terrible potty-mouth even filthier. The turquoise glitter/shimmer she requested bled into the base, which turned the  sherbert-like bright orange base into a canned-pumpkin color, which     I do not share kinship with (neither did Rie). Three months into it, I finally got it. Rie loved it and I sent it to the lab. A few weeks later, I was mixing something else and I thought—what the *eek is that?     Well, the blues ran the orange into a muddy imbroglio again, making the pigments unstable. I quickly reworked the game plan, I actually hunted down and brought in the orange sherbet of my childhood,  you know, the kind in a tub with swirls of different colors and added a mélange of periwinkle, pink and orange shimmer to float on the  glaze without loosing the integrity of the bright orange. True story, “Rie” stands for Marie Antoinette, so we say—let them eat sherbet!

Rescue Beauty Lounge Fashion Polish
I’ve never worked with anyone who had actually mixed (frankened) nail polish before. When Sam and I were DM-ing each other, this made me nervous; I was humbled and excited. It was refreshing to  know that she had her own technical challenge. She wanted to incorporate her deep affection for black base nail polish with gold  and red glitters. The black pigment’s weight issue with the floating   glitter ratio was indeed a challenge for me as well. Sam sent me a  photo of a breathtaking sunset that bleeds into the golden sunlight.   Red clouds coattail into the blackest of the night. I mixed six     versions of the color and shipped it to her home in France, ridiculously wishing that I, too, could shrink and sneak into her shipping box and be whisked away to France.

Rescue Beauty Lounge An Accidental Interloper
Who is the nail blogger behind this color? ’Tis I, an interloper who is not a nail blogger--shameless I know. When we were in the beginning stages of mixing Liberty, Pammy mentioned that we needed some kind of silver in our RBL family. For me, making a unique silver color was an obstacle I had yet to solve for many years. I have numerous bottles in my RBL cemetery drawers sitting there like rejected sleeping beauties. Yet, it was impossible to stop my hands and my foolish heart from trying again. I mixed, searched my polish graveyard, reawakened, remixed and re-married pigments to     achieve this silver goddess with an edge faceted by multi-shimmer hues. It's a silver palette I can embrace as a part of the RBL family. Please forgive me??

The formula of these is thicker than the average shimmer-finish polish and it goes on feeling slightly dry.  This is fairly consistent with the texture of Rescue's other shimmer colors, so if you've used them before, you'll know what to expect.  I had the best results when I applied thicker coats, allowing each to self-level and dry for a good five minutes before applying the next.  The dark colors in this collection are completely opaque in two coats, but I preferred the look of three coats on the lighter colors, and that's how I'm wearing them here.  I'm also wearing a thicker than usual coat of topcoat to amplify the level of sparkle and shimmer in the colors.  The glossier the topcoat, the more the sparkle shows through.  Dry time is on the long side of average, same as Rescue's other colors.

I'm so honored to be a part of this amazing collection of colors designed by some truly fantastic people.  With blogs as awesome as theirs, there's no way their colors could be anything short of spectacular.  Each shade in this set has tons of character and lots of little details to discover when you take a closer look.  Everyone made such pretty polishes, I can't even pick a favorite!

I'd also like to thank Ji for giving me the opportunity to design another polish with her, and also for her patience and artistic vision. If you know me, you'll how I'm indecisive, constantly dreaming, and always trying to work on a million different things at once, but Ji handled my Gemini nature like a pro.  Haha! Thank you.  I'm so grateful.

The 48-hour pre-order period for this collection starts June 28th at noon EST.  Be sure to sign up for Rescue Beauty Lounge's mailing list if you need a reminder!

Essie Resort Collection for Spring/Summer 2013 Swatches and Review

I really like Essie's Resort collection this year.  I think I usually like their Resort collections, but I'm just really digging this one a lot right now.  The promo pictures actually make it look boring, but it's so good in real life.

Essie Come Here.  A fairly bright red-coral creme.  Not super bright, but bright enough to make it interesting.  Still has a softness to it that gives it a bit of a sun-bleached effect.

Essie First Timer.  Gorgeous blue-tinged light mint green creme.  Reminds me somewhat of MAC Peppermint Patti.  Creamy and sweet looking, like mint ice cream.

Essie In The Cab-ana.  A light sky blue creme.  In some lights it looks more turquoise than pure blue.  Either way, it's one of the more flattering light blue cremes on my skintone.  They usually give me dead-looking hands (yet I still love them), but this one is a bit warmer-looking.

Essie Under Where?  A light lavender creme.  Sorta pink, sorta purple, and with a really nice finish.  If it was a little more sheer, I'd call it a milky jelly.  It's not a solid chalky creme finish, but it's not quite sheer enough for me to call it a true jelly.  It looks soft and squishy, though.  Not harsh, not stark.  Just... pretty.

The formula on these was flawless.  Smooth, creamy, exactly the right consistency.  No streaking.  No problems at all.  Under Where is thinner than the rest of the colors but applies just as nicely.  I did three coats of each but only Under Where needed the third coat.  Dry time is fast.

Like I said, I really enjoyed this collection.  The colors are bright, fresh and interesting and the formula is perfect.  I'm in love with Essie's creme formula lately.  They seem to have perfected the formula of their creme polishes so that they apply effortlessly, are opaque and non-streaky (for most colors, at least) and dry really quickly.  I also like their small, precise brushes.  Sure, it takes me more strokes to cover my nail, but the small rounded brush makes it harder to get polish on my cuticles.

Plus, the names of these polishes are strangely dirty and that amuses me.

The only negative thing I can think of regarding this collection is that the colors are probably dupe-able.  Though, I think we're at that point in nail polish history where duplicates are inevitable, and as long as they have a good formula, I don't mind so much.

They're back! Rescue Beauty Lounge Coral, Grunge and Moulin Rouge Swatches and Review

Three of Rescue Beauty Lounge's classic but sold out shades have just made their return!  Welcome back Coral, Grunge, and Moulin Rouge!

Rescue Beauty Lounge Coral 2012
Mediun pink-toned coral creme.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Grunge 2012
Dirty pink-tinged taupe/putty/grey with hidden silver shimmer.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Moulin Rouge 2012
Dark chocolate-covered cherry creme.

The formula on these was slightly different than the originals, but still very good.  The main difference is that they're thinner, which also means that they dry faster.  The opacity on all three is excellent, only two coats are needed for complete coverage.

Grunge seems a little different than I remember it- darker, less pink and with added shimmer, but the other two seem to be spot on.  Good to see these classic Rescue shades return!

All three colors are available now on rescuebeauty.com.

Models Own Beetlejuice Collection for Spring/Summer 2012 Swatches and Review

The Models Own Spring Beetlejuice collection is here! The colors are all duochromes like the previous Beetlejuice collection, but this time they're summer colors and they actually made the polishes look like the promo pictures (or perhaps the other way around):

Spring/Summer 2012 Beetlejuice Collection promo picture from Models Own

Models Own Copper Pot

Models Own Copper Pot, four coats. This one starts out as an orangey metallic copper with slight green highlights. Change the angle and it shifts colors entirely to a more neutral bronze with brassy gold highlights. Change the angle more and you get bright green on top of yellow gold. I don't see a whole lot of two-colors-at-once style duochrome effect, but it does change from one color to another pretty quickly.

Models Own Indian Ocean

Models Own Indian Ocean, four coats. This is a sheer baby blue base with glass fleck shimmer that shifts from purple and pink to orange and yellow. There's also some little flecks of gold throughout the polish that are visible even when only the pink side of the duochrome is visible. The yellow flash is shy on camera, but it's very obvious in real life, especially in sunlight. This is a really soft color but it doesn't lack intensity. Love it. Totally worth the four coats.

Models Own Indian Ocean, three coats. The only flaw with this color is that it is sheer. Here's how it looks with three coats. Pretty good, but still a little bit too much visible nail line.

Models Own Indian Ocean, two coats over baby blue creme. I tried layering it over a blue creme similar to the base color of the polish and it looked all right, but I much prefer it by itself, even with some visible nail line.

Models Own Tropical Sun

Models Own Tropical Sun, four coats. This color shifts between a warm gold/yellow/orange to a cooler pink/coral/soft orange. The finish is a gold-based metallic shimmer and it has some awesome silver microglitter scattered throughout. This is another surprisingly soft and light color, but it's not as dramatic of a duochrome as Indian Ocean is. Still, it does change colors and the microglitter is a nice touch.

The formula on these was workable but not perfect. The texture was nicer than the previous set of Beetlejuice colors. A little thinner, a little easier flowing, not as drippy. The colors are all pretty sheer, I did four coats of each and that seemed perfect. If you are going to do multiple coats instead of layering to achieve opacity, you must take your time, do thin coats and wait at least two minutes in between each or you'll experience bubbling and an extended dry time. I know I say that a lot, but I have a tendency to rush my coats and when I do slow down and do thinner coats I always get a better result. Dry time is pretty slow, but not extreme. Just don't forget the quick dry.

Overall, I think this trio of colors is gorgeous and perfectly summery. They're not as intense/as extreme of a duochrome finish as I normally prefer, but they're still fantastic and I don't regret buying them at all. I also like how they're not drastically different from the promo image like the last ones were. Probably why I'm happy with these instead of being disappointed like I was with the last ones. Only real problem with these is that they're sheer, but I don't mind doing an extra coat if the color is cool enough.

I ordered mine from the Models Own website, but, sadly, shipping to the States is £12.95 (about $20.60 USD) no matter how much you order.
