31DC2014: Day 2

Day 2 of the 31 Day Challenge is one of my least favorite days because I just don't like orange. I try and try... But nope.
But on the bright side, this prompt means I get to post the other design I did for PP Blog Fest but chose not to post on that day. Hooray for recycling!

Can you tell what inspired me? ORANGE CHOCOLATE. A true love of mine.
It has come to my attention previously that some of you poor American folk (and likely Europeans also) have not experienced the joy that is a Terry's Chocolate Orange, and I feel truly sorry for you. I would like to personally send you all one, or at least a piece of one.

The orange polish I used is Picture Polish - Totes. It's citrus-y and not pumpkin-y, so this shade is one I find more wearable than others.
The chocolate is Picture Polish - Malt Teaser.

As I said, I was creating this for Blog Fest, so I was experimenting with nail vinyls. That's what I used for the lines creating the orange wedge.
This manicure is still not my favorite but I enjoyed playing with the vinyls!

Now take a walk down memory lane and check out my previous Day 2 designs:

31DC2013 - day 29

Need I tell you how excited I am that after today there are only two days left of this 31 Day Challenge? Haha! Don't get me wrong, I love doing the challenge, it just came around at a bad time for me... Heh. I need some relaxation time, my nails included!

Today's theme is Inspired By The Supernatural and most people may think of ghosts or aliens but I think of my very favorite television show, Supernatural, which premieres its new season next week! I am so stoked.
Of course I'm doing nails inspired by the show again... But in a somewhat different way.

Inspired by a Supernatural shirt! (Okay, I don't think the shirt is actually licensed to have anything to do with the show, but it says Supernatural, it has skulls, and studs, I had to have it, duh.)

I used rhinestones to emulate the patterns of big and small studs on the sleeves, and using some tape I added black triangles with some gray shading at the tip. I think it matches the shirt wonderfully!

When I thought of this idea, I was wondering if I would have the right color for the job.
I looked to my nail table, and BAM, Color Club - In Theory was already out and waiting for me.
It was polish-fate!

I used Color Club - Where's The Soiree? for the black and some Zoya - Dove with a sponge for the smoky shading.

The stones were from Cheeky Beauty.

Do you guys like these Supernatural (kinda) nails? I love how they look!
Any more Supernatural lovers in the house? Hope so! Wonder what's gonna happen in the new season... Yay!

31DC2013 - day 2

31 Day Challenge Day 2 let's go!
Today's theme is Orange.

If you know me, you know I really don't like orange. At all. Never.
I try to wear it and like it but every time I do I just cannot get into it.

How do you make orange likeable? You add pizza...

I'm actually loving this mani. Pizza nails!!!
It's not the most precise, but lets just say that's the gooey melty cheese? Yeah.

My friends and I have eaten a lot of Pizza Hut buffet this summer, so it is an extremely fitting manicure for me. If only I was wearing it while I was at the buffet on Sunday. HA.

The base color here is piCture pOlish - Citrus.

This mani is based around an image from the Cheeky plate CH-41. I tried stamping it in beige, I tried stamping it in yellow, but nothing worked. So I ended up stamping it in white and filling in the colors of the pizza. It didn't take long though because I was able to be semi-messy without it showing too much. I mixed some custom colors for the pizza colors and don't really remember what I used.

I'm really happy with the results!

I am so pleased that I was able to do a mani I actually like for orange day!
Anyone else addicted to pizza buffet? I'm hungry...

piCture pOlish blog fest 2013! the year of the blogger!

Hello everyone and Happy Blogfest! That's right - I am once again participating in piCture pOlish's annual Blog Fest celebration.
This year's theme is the Year of the Blogger. "This year it’s all about you and celebrating what you do!"
And what's even more interesting is this year, we all have to create a wonderful nail art manicure using three shades sent to us by the very generous girls ar piCture pOlish. There is going to be an overwhelming amount of amazing manis today guys!
Being that I am in Newfoundland, North America's most easterly point, my post will be one of the first from this continent! Woo! (Everyone is posting at 7pm local time.)
I'm sure you all have seen the fantastic blogger collaboration polishes that PP has been releasing... And the three winners this year will get to create their own shades!
The voting will happen on the special Blog Fest Pinterest board
here.

Without further ado... Here's my manicure.

The colors chosen for me were Marine, Mad Magenta, and Citrus. I was so happy to get three great creme shades!

piCture pOlish - Marine
This is a beautiful teal creme polish with a great formula. 2 coats, no issues. And no staining! I've worn this like three times since receiving it a few weeks ago... Haha!
piCture pOlish - Mad Magenta
This is a shade I always wanted from PP so I was so happy to find it in my package! Again, two easy coats. This has been on my toes ever since the day I got it! Great toe color.

piCture pOlish - Citrus
This is my least favorite of the three, just because it is orange. Not an orange fan. But it works for me in nail art with other colors! Just as with the other two, two coats, no issues.
So... What kind of art did I do? I'll give you one guess...

Leopard print!!!
I struggled for a long time with whether or not I wanted to do leopard print. I've done it a lot and I know a lot of people would be going all-out with intense, new designs. But in the end I decided hey, it is so me, I should just go for it!

Another part of this year's Blog Fest is that we also have to do tutorials! So here's how I created this manicure.

First of all, you're gonna need a small dotting tool, your clean-up brush (and polish remover) and a makeup sponge. (Don't forget that you can use the same sponge over and over by cutting off the used parts! The one I've used here looks like it has helped me in many manis! Haha!)

The first thing you need to do is the gradient. I like to use two techniques together to create the most flawless gradient.
First, apply your base color (Citrus) and allow it to dry almost completely.
Next, blob some Mad Magenta onto your work surface (scrap paper, wax paper, stamping plate, whatever). Using a small edge of the sponge, begin to build the color onto the tip and fading down into the nail. For a more detailed tutorial of this technique, check out this post I did ages and ages ago when I was still a newbie! (Even though the pictures aren't up to my current standard, the post still has lots of great tips.)

To blend the gradient even more and perfect the fade, I use the second gradient technique. There is a great tutorial for this by The Nailasaurus
Basically, you paint lines of the two colors on your work surface, swirl it a little in the middle, and then dip the sponge in/around it to pick up the two colors and the blended part in the middle.
You sponge this onto your entire nail all at once, dabbing several times to continue to blend the colors.
You'll need to do this a couple times to get enough polish in the sponge to be able to do all your nails.

The reason I like to do both techniques at once is because I find the first technique doesn't create the smoothest gradient, and the second one on its own requires too many coats to build the second color if you don't already have some on the nail. So do both. Got it?

Get yo' clean up on, girrrrrrl. The sponging techniques can leave a big mess. Use your clean up brush (and optionally some Q-tips first) to get all the polish off of your skin.

Once you're all clean, add the first step of your leopard print with Marine. I just do those blobs irregularly with the brush from the polish itself. It does not need to be perfect or neat at all! All leopards are different, right?

Then you have to add the black detail with a black polish and your small dotting tool. Again, don't stress about being neat and perfect. Just make random shapes like C shapes and O shapes and dots and lines and whatever you think looks right.
You can do it big, small, on your full nail, just in some areas - however you feel!

You add topcoat and tada! You're done! Aren't they pretty?
I'm happy I decided to go with the leopard print because I just love the way it looks. I think I'll wear this manicure for a week at least.

Thank you so much to the girls at piCture pOlish for letting me participate in this great tradition once again! And happy Blog Fest to all!

neon skittles!

Hey guys! Short post from me tonight with a cute skittle mani.

As I've said before, I cannot stop wearing my Sunsational Collection from China Glaze! If you missed the swatches, check them out here.
These three shades were calling to me one day, and they look great together!

The pinky and index finger are China Glaze - Sun of a Peach.
The thumb and ring finger are China Glaze - Neon & On & On.
The middle finger is China Glaze - Bottoms Up.
I mixed the colors differently on my other hand.

I was planning to stamp something on top of these, but ended up just leaving it alone because I liked the colors so much!

I almost feel like I need backups of all the cremes from this collection... But I'll resist. Maybe.

Girly Bits - Sailor's Delight

Good morning and happy Monday! I'm starting this week off right with a beautiful polish!

Girly Bits - Sailor's Delight
I'm not usually a ran of reds, oranges, or red-oranges, but the shimmer and shine of this one just pull me in.

Pam from Girly Bits told me that this polish is one of her faves because it was from her very first collection!

You can get away with two coats but I did three for the pictures. The formula is great and glides on smooth. It's jelly-like and packed with great shimmer.
And don't you just love Pam's bottles?! So cute!

I can't believe this and Jini Goes Indie were my first Girly Bits polishes. After these great experiences, I'll definitely be grabbin' some more! (And also because she is a fellow Canadian! Gotta support my ladies.)

You can purchase Girly Bits on their site or on several other international distributors. Sailor's Delight (and most other polishes) retail for $10 CAD.
Don't forget to check 'em out on Facebook!

China Glaze Sunsational Collection - swatches and review!

Hey everyone! Happy Thursday.
Today I'm finally showing you swatches of all 12 of the beauties in the China Glaze Sunsational Collection for Summer 2013.

I don't often do this, but I splurged and bought the entire collection. All the colors were just so me...

The collection is split into two halves - the cremes and the jellies.
For those of you not familiar with those terms, cremes are opaque polishes with no shimmer, and jelly polishes are semi-translucent with a "squishy" look to them.

Several early reviews complained a lot about the formulas and that made me sad because I wanted them so desperately and I wanted them to be perfect. Despite the bad reviews I bought them anyway - and I was happily surprised. I'll comment on that as we go.

What I love about the colors in this collection is that they are mega vibrant, but without that extreme neon quality that some polishes have, which tends to look horrific on very fair-skinned ladies like me.
And neons are notoriously hard to photograph but I think I did a pretty good job!

I'm going to start with the cremes because I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

seeing stars

Aloha! Time for another summery mani using the China Glaze Sunsational Collection for Summer 2013.
By the way - I finally have all 12 of them swatched and I will be posting my full review tomorrow!

Since I bought this collection a few weeks ago, I truly have not stopped wearing them.

The base color here is China Glaze - Shell-O and I added OPI - Yule Love This Silver on top for some added sparkle. And then some stamping!
The image I used is from plate Mash-49, and I stamped using Konad Black special polish which is my all-time faaaave black for stamping (duh.)

This manicure was so bright and in-your-face with the neon color and the huge stars. I loved it!

Now... Can you contain your excitement to see all the swatches tomorrow?! HA!
Toodles!

Color Club Kaleidoscope Collection

Heeeeeey everyone! Exciting post today, a brand new collection from Color Club!

This is the new summer collection, Kaleidoscope. I found this set at Winners for just $9.99! It was just released so I was really surprised to find it there already! Score.
There are some seriously awesome polishes in this set, so scroll on for the swatches!

Color Club - Evolution
This is a nice & bright sky blue creme. The formula is not amazing but not bad. Three coats. I think it is a bit more vibrant than other similar blues I have.

Color Club - In Theory
This is a great orange/peach/coral shade. I did two coats for my swatch, which was opaque in person, but the photos show streaks. The formula was nice, super glossy! This is just the right shade of orange for me, I think.

Color Club - Endless
My Hello Kitty pajama pants made it into the first shot... Hehe. I thought it was cute. This is a nice light pink creme, nothing original about it, but it's cute and the formula is nice - 2 coats, super glossy.

Color Club - Abyss
Hot damn, I love this one! A gorgeous, rich, blue-toned green. The formula is great too, super pigmented, and needs just two thin coats. It does dry a little flat, so you'll want topcoat with this one. I love it! A+.

Color Club - Bright Night
Another big winner! This is blue polish perfection. Super pigmented, great formula, covers in two thin coats. It is a touch less vibrant than it appears in the photos. This one also dries a bit flat so adding topcoat would make it really shine.
I wore this for 24 hours, without basecoat, and had absolutely NO staining! Didn't even stain my skin upon removal. Doesn't get better than that.

Color Club - Pearl-spective (over Bright Night)
This is a great shimmery topcoat. It's got large shimmer particles that flash pink, and in some lights it flashes orange and green. It was really hard to capture, but the pink shimmer is really strong. It looks so good over the blue, and it would probably look great over anything!

Overall, I am totally impressed with this collection from Color Club! If you spot this collection, definitely pick it up! You won't be disappointed.
The blue and green are fantastic, the shimmer is gorgeous, and the other cremes are lovely too. No complaints!
