New Corrado - Design study

Volkswagen Corrado Concept - Miranda Media rendered

Miranda Media has released exclusive concept sketches of own-designed vehicle might look for the series based on the VW Corrado.

Miranda Media specialists were also intrigued by this question, so they have developed four conceptual sketches that represent the impression based on the view of a new sports car in its serial production and tuning versions. “That’s exactly what the new VW Corrado should look like, and no way else”, says Patrick Moczarsky, a professional designer and graphic artist of Miranda Media.

The expensive concept car represents a dynamic blend of the old model and progressive design. The first draft should focus our attention on how the future Volkswagen car can comprise all the features in a compact model with traditional optics. The project has made it absolutely clear that the old VW Corrado must give place to the “New Corrado”, which could be successfully introduced with the motto: it’s time to say goodbye to the old outfit!

Some design features were remained, however, and replaced by ordinary modern parts. The first thing that strikes the eye here is a small rear spoiler that can be pulled out automatically, just as in the old Corrado.

Light alloy wheels (Schmidt Revolution) together with a flat roof and a notably protrudent vehicle body of the tuning version contribute to the revolutionary, truly sport-looking image. The hood lines running up between aggressively styled headlights in a deep curvature make the design even more expressive. Large air holes flank the front side and rear end of the body, thus causing the feeling as if the car merely absorbs the street.

“We realize, of course, that Volkswagen will not present such a car right now, but the flight of imagination is so fascinating that it won’t give us a moment’s rest”, says Patrick Moczarsky from Miranda Media.

Mazda's 2009 LA Design Challenge Entry - Mazda Souga

Mazda Souga

The year is 2030 and 18-year-old Max is off to Mazda's Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM) plant just outside of Los Angeles. It is here where he will pick up his new vehicle - the one that he has been designing with the help of Mazda's "Virtual Designer" Web site. Finally, a car that is as attainable as it is exotic. It is Max's perfect fit in every way from the gorgeous shape to the absolutely perfect packaging.

During the global recession of 2008, Los Angeles, a city already known for its creative industries, began seeing a new movement of young entrepreneurs. With many of the traditional economic engines in crisis, necessity and emerging technology dictated a new economic model. For example, at the turn of the century, the recording industry was turned on its head when technology-enabled youth created records and shared them from their home computers. In similar fashion, Los Angeles became a hub of 16 to 23 year olds creating their own brands and products on desktop 3D manufacturing software. Educational institutions began restructuring their curricula to teach this "micro-manufacturing" model of entrepreneurialism. Never before had there been such a variety of brands and products. The phenomenon soon went global via the virtual Web -- an evolution of the Internet.

Mazda quickly took notice. Recognizing the historically slow pace of the auto manufacturing industry and comparing it to this nimble and youthful movement, Mazda began assembling a new creative outlet for its design and manufacturing activities. A new virtual-reality based Web site - VMazda.com - was created and is now home to an unprecedented level of entrepreneurship and creative expression for young people. VMazda is a design playground that allows young enthusiasts to experiment with, build and share their automotive dreams in a virtual world at no cost. Mazda Design Mentors guide users through several areas of design in order to create successfully branded Mazda vehicles. VMazda acts as a talent pool to identify future Mazda designers and has eliminated the need for customer clinics. Future customers and mass trends are identified simultaneously.

Max has been using VMazda for the past year, slowly creating and refining his dream vehicle with Talvin, one of the Mazda Design Mentors available to him. With Talvin's guidance, Max has created a compact two-seat sports vehicle, placing the driver's seat front and center, tightly wrapping its mesh-like surfaces around the driver's seat. With this new type of rapid manufacturing, Max's vehicle has no limits when it comes to shapes and surface treatment. If Max can dream it, he can build it!

The sustainable composite mesh surfaces provide strength, rigidity, and translucency (for high visibility), while also becoming an aesthetic of Mazda products. Max wants a car that is as thrilling to drive as it is practical for his daily needs. The extra seat is for his girlfriend, and he has opted to add a small storage area for models he carries around for his desktop product-design business. A totally unique asymmetrical layout is created, with a graceful S-curve defining the architectural spaces from plan view. Max now has enough of an income to bring his virtual car into reality and eagerly heads to his nearest DDM plant where his car is rapidly manufactured from sustainable materials grown on-site. Once there, Max watches as his beast is born. The design that Max has created is incorporated into standard Mazda components such as the electric wheels and the energy storage cell, which doubles as the floor.

Max has entered into a contract with Mazda similar to the one with his cell phone. Because manufacturing costs have been drastically reduced, he will pay a low price for his new car (about $2,000 in 2010 dollars). This price pays for the physical property (like an iPhone or Blackberry). During this two-year contract, Max will pay a monthly bill for the energy used to power his car (like AT&T or Sprint). After the two-year period, Max will return to a Mazda DDM plant and "renew" his car if he wishes to do so. All materials in the car will be re-used to create another new vehicle that fits his evolving needs and desires.

Max climbs into his new car -- a minimal, lightweight sports coupe. It is dramatically proportioned and ornately detailed. Most digital communication and information devices are now integrated into clothing and fashion accessories. As a result, Mazda has removed these redundant and costly devices from the interior in favor of driver-focused, lightweight performance. The interior contains only the essentials: seats, steering wheel, throttle controls and a display surface. Every penny spent to manufacture a Mazda vehicle goes into creating a race car-like experience. Max accelerates onto the freeway as acres and acres of sustainable corn and bamboo fields race by...

Auto Design : Saab Fashionista Concept

SAAB Fashionista Concept

GM announced that it will focus on four brands. Unfortunately Saab is not one of the four brands. Very likely Saab will be sold to some Chinese company.

Despite unknown future for Saab, Mayeul Walser, a 4th year design student at Creapole-ESDI has created an interesting concept called Saab Fashionista.

It is a 2+2 sport coupe inspired by the designs of world known names Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel. Saab Fashionista concept is based on the platform of Chevrolet Volt.

So in real life it would have a 40 mile range from the electric engine with a combustion engine that kicks in after that to charge the batteries. As Saab is not GM’s priority anymore we doubt we’ll see anything from Saab that is based on the Volt, but it is always fun to speculate and dream what future models could look like.

SEAT released Ibiza ST Concept Sketch

SEAT Ibiza ST Sketch

MILTON KEYNES, UK : April 03, 2009 - In the week the new Exeo saloon and ST officially launch in UK showrooms, ambitious Spanish motor maker SEAT is underlining its intention to compete in other new sectors of the car market with first details of an exciting addition to the Ibiza line-up.

The forthcoming Ibiza ST, illustrated here with a concept design sketch, is destined for UK showrooms next year and becomes the third distinct body style in the Ibiza model family – joining established big sellers the practical Ibiza 5dr and sporty Ibiza SC.

The unveiling of the attractive ST is, however, not SEAT's first entry into the supermini estate segment: it follows the SEAT Cordoba Vario which debuted in showrooms here in 1998.

This time around, the compact estate offering promises even more style, comfort and practicality thanks to the exceptional creative efforts of SEAT design chief Luc Donckerwolke.

The ex-Lamborghini man, who has introduced SEAT's new trademark Arrow Design concept on cars such as the latest generation Ibiza and new Exeo, is again working to deliver a healthy dose of much-needed sporting SEAT style into a traditionally dowdy market sector.

The rationale behind SEAT's latest new car is as confident as its design. Speaking recently SEAT S.A. President Erich Schmitt said: 'Customers want attractive, top quality vehicles regardless of whether times are good or bad. That is why we are launching ten new models that suit customers' tastes this year, thereby positioning ourselves for better times.

'Next year we will be launching the third variant of our successful Ibiza model, a wagon version, which we will be producing here in Martorell. This will be the Ibiza ST.'

More precise details of the new model will be revealed closer to its launch, although SEAT is confirming that it will include a selection of engines not currently offered in the Ibiza.

Head of SEAT UK, Peter Wyhinny, said: 'The addition of a great-looking, sporty and practical Ibiza ST to our fast-growing range is a very exciting development.

'It will, I'm sure, find significant appeal across a broad spectrum of UK drivers and I'm very much looking forward to its arrival in 2010.'

Audi A’KIMONO LS2.0 Concept

Teodor Kyuchukov, a Bulgarian PhD student at the University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev", Bulgaria, Department of Industrial Design, who developed Audi A’KIMONO LS2.0 Concept based on the original A'kimono Concept which received the third prize at the Desire Design Contest 2007 organized by Domus Academy & Stile Bertone.

On the "Automotive Lighting Sculpture" concept, the exterior surfaces integrate an artifical lighting system which makes the car's silhouette recognizable at night. This system makes use of hidden lighting, where the source is not visible.

The exterior design combines the formal language of the latest Audi models with the lines of the Japanese national costume - the kimono, which is used in the martial arts where it allows optimal movement of the human body.

Design : VOLVO SC90 Concept - Handsome, Powerful and Safe

VOLVO SC90 Concept

The SC90 was designed by Nouphone J. Bansasine during his internship at Volvo in Summer 2007. The brief was to create a new premium product line for the brand.

As Nouphone explains, "My proposal was based on the growing trend for premium 4 door coupes, taking the concept to the extreme by exploring and developing a premium 4 door sportscar for the year 2015."

This sportscar with 4 doors and 4 seats would become Volvo's new flagship model and drive the brand towards a more emotional direction.

The Volvo SC90 would compete in the premium sport sedan segment with such models ad the Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide.

Volvo SC90 ConceptThe main design element of the car is its profile, chracterized by convex and concave surfacing.

This gives the car a classic and simple silhouette with a "more complex and fresh second read."

Seen in side profile the main defining lines and secondary elements are strategically designed by angled profiles from 180 to 90 degree increment.

"Each week I had a status review with VMCC's Vice President, Design Director, Strategic Design Chief, Senior Designers, Business Manager, and Studio Engineers.

About the Designer

Nouphone J. Bansasine has graduated from the Art Center College in the fall of 2007, and is currently employed as a designer for Volvo Car Corps Concept and Monitoring Center (VMCC) in Camarillo, CA.
