Hong Kong to trial-run BYD 3DM plug-in hybrid

SHANGHAI : June 12,- 2009 Hong Hong's environment bureau top official today (June 12) participated in a promotional activity on clean fuel vehicles in neighboring southern Chinese city of Shenzhen to mark the launch of a trial on BYD's dual mode (DM) hybrid vehicles, webnewswire.com reported.


The Environment Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has joined with the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Shenzhen Municipal Government to promote the use of clean-fuel vehicles, and launched the trial scheme together. "The scheme will enhance our understanding of this new generation of dual mode hybrid vehicles," said Ms Anissa Wong, Permanent Secretary for HK Environment.

Shenzhen was among the 13 pilot cities in mainland China to showcase and promote energy-saving vehicles powered by new types of fuel. Ms Wong expressed the wish that Hong Kong and Shenzhen could make the best use of their experiences in developing energy-saving transportation and step up communication and knowledge sharing on research, supply and use of environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Hong Kong will commence the trial of two BYD dual mode plug-in hybrid vehicles "3DM" starting from this July. The trial will not only provide the local government with useful information for assessing the use of this type of vehicle in territory, but will also encourage the public to learn more about this new type of vehicle.

Hong Kong has identified the promotion of electric vehicles as a key measure to promote a green economy. The local government has set up a steering committee to recommend strategy and specific measures to promote electric vehicles. Hong Kong began a trial on an electric vehicle in mid-May.

Chinese BYD to sell electric cars in Israel by 2009

SHANGHAI, August 7,2008 China's BYD Automobile Co.,Ltd. said Tuesday that it will start to sell rechargeable electric cars in Israel by 2009, then in other European markets in the following years, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

"BYD plans to sell BYD E6 Electric and Plug-in Hybrid F6DM in Israel, a country that strongly supports environmental technologies," a BYD executive in charge of the company's export operations said.

The Israeli government announced early this year an ambitious plan to install the world's first electric car network in Israel by 2011. Moreover, the country offers big tax cuts for electric cars.

BYD's E6 electric vehicles, set for sale in 2009 in Israel, will be a 5-seater with an acceleration of 0 to 100 kph in around 10 seconds. Its top speed should be160 kph (100 mph), and the battery pack, which is located under the rear passenger seats, will be based on BYD's own lithium-ion iron phosphate technology.

The F6DM hybrid is a mid-sized sedan to be launched in China later this year. It has a top speed of 100 mph (160 kph), with a range of 62 miles (100 km) in the all-electric mode and 267 miles (430 km) total after the gas engine kicks in. A fully electric version called the F6E is planned for 2009 debut.

BYD to Europe is starting!

Chinese auto makers have seen Europe as the holy grail of car sales, quite the opposite to US and Euro car producers who see China as their make it or break it market. Some Chinese marques have already made it to Europe but found themselves on the receiving end of an entirely negative market, especially once their crash test results were aired all over the world.

BYD have reportedly selected a Dutch automotive dealer to be the sole importer for The Netherlands, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Slovenia and Hungary, all of which are due to be getting BYD automobiles once sales start around 2010. BYD claim that by 2009, they will have passed European crash safety standards, and emission standards.

The first models for Europe from BYD are likely to be plug-in hybrid models, such as the BYD F6e, or the BYD F3Re, petrol models are likely to follow later.

This unconvential entry into the European market may well win BYD a few plus points in the traditionally agressive market. Where Brilliance and Landwind failed with their petrol models, perhaps BYD will win an advantage. Oil prices seem to increase at the forecourt daily, and the chance of owning a cheap Chinese hybrid automobile may well be the answer for many European families who see the family car as a transportation tool, rather than a status symbol.
