Guest Blogger - The Crafeteria - Fabric Covered Decorative Letters

Hi Someday Crafts readers! I'm Tal from The Crafeteria and I'm so excited to be here today! I'm 30+ years old (but still a kid at heart), a mother to three little ones. We live in a small village not far from Tel Aviv, Israel's cultural capital (and one of my favorite cities in the world!). We moved here about 4 years ago, after 8 years in Taiwan & China.

When we moved to our new place, the wall above my daughter's bed seemed empty. I wanted to hang something there, but didn't know what. That was when I saw cute decorative letters, and decided to make those for her. It's pretty simple, and I prepared an easy tutorial so that you can make them too!

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

You can use store bought wooden or paper mache letters for this project, but it's so much fun to make these yourself, so I'll teach you how to do that.

For the letters you'll need -
A piece of cardboard
Empty toilet rolls
Scissors
X-Acto knife
Glue Gun

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Using the cardboard, trace your chosen letters, twice of each, and cut them.

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Draw parallel lines on your empty paper roll, about 2.5 cm (1") apart, then cut.

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Using hot glue, glue your circles onto one of the letters.

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Then apply glue to the other side of the circles and place the other letter on top. The hot glue dries quickly, so work fast and gradually.
Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Cut a few strips of cardboard (if you're using regular cardboard box, make sure to cut the cardboard perpendicular to the waves).

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Using these strips and glue gun, finish your letter. It doesn't have to be very accurate, as we're going to cover it with batting.
Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Let it dry for a few minutes, then you can move on to the next step - cover your letter with fabric!
For that, you'll need -
Your letter (obviously...)
Fabric
Some sort of batting
Scissors
Spray adhesive
Piece of felt

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Cut the fabric and batting to match the shape of the letter. As we're going to work with curves and corners, make sure you leave enough fabric for mistakes. Place the batting on the letter and the fabric on the batting. Using the spray adhesive, glue the fabric to the back of the letter. This part can be kind of tricky - each letter and its own problems...

A few words about working with spray adhesive - Spray from a distance of 20-30 cm (8"-12") on wrong side of the fabric and on the back of the letter, wait 10-30 seconds and carefully apply fabric onto letter. If you have wrinkles, lift fabric and apply again.

Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

Now to the back of the letter - cut a piece of felt a bit smaller than your letter, then use the spray adhesive to apply onto the back of the letter.
Fabric Covered Letters Tutorial

That's it! You can now hang your letter or word on the wall. Since they're made of cardboard, they're super light, so it shouldn't be a problem. You can glue a loop of yarn to the back or just use double stick tape.

Twig Letters

How novel is this idea?   Take regular twigs and turn them into letters!   Totally cute!  I especially love the idea of spelling the word "Spring" with them.   Bliss Bloom Blog has the secret for doing this.

Stairs That Talk

I want stairs that "talk" like these. Wouldn't it be awesome for teenagers to read these phrases and others every day as they walk up and down the stairs? It would be a great reminder to me too! See some of the other phrases that were put on the stairs at JayDee Crafts.

Wedding Gift Galore!

With all the upcoming wedding this month, we all need ideas to give as gifts. Here are a few that I think any bride and groom would love! Link up your wedding gifts ideas at the bottom.

Anything with the couple's new last name makes newlyweds happy! It will be displayed for years (or at least until a new baby comes)! The Creative Crate created this personalized name blocks HERE.

His and Hers gifts are very fun! Make something like this for the bathroom or closet or maybe even a key rack. Lots of ideas for his/hers gifts. This idea is from All Things Beautiful!

Be the guest who gets the most compliments by making a wedding towel cake for a wedding gift. Can you hear the ooohs and aaaahs? The Pretty Policy made this cute You can also make some for the kitchen with kitchen towels or dishtowels, adding gadgets with long handles, like utensils, garden hand tools or anything else long and skinny! Way to cool!

I love these alphabet art photos. They would be great wedding gifts for anyone (especially if you created one with the newlyweds last name)! Read this post at Reinvented by Little Lizard King. She shares how to make these photo words by yourself (with the help of the internet.) See the fun idea HERE.

Monograms on the newlyweds initials with a big ampersand make a great gift! Who wouldn't love something like this hanging on a wall? Are We There Yet? shows how to make these gifts. (via Creative Crate.)
You've seen the fun gifts and signs with words or names spelled from objects. Take that idea one step farther by making a "date" sign or gift using various mismatched numbers. Perfect for a wedding/anniversary! Wouldn't that be fun with the person's first or last name written above or to the side of the numbers? I see this starting a new wedding gift trend. Learn how to make these at Hope Studios. Go HERE.

If the couple is LDS, anything with a temple on it makes a great gift. See how to make these personalized temple blocks HERE at Oopsey Daisy.

I personally think this is a grand idea for a wedding gift. No bride wants to go without knowing the in-laws important dates (namely birthdates). You may need to explain what it is and how to use it in a card, but it will be well-accepted. Learn how to make perpetual birthday calendars for yourself and as gifts for others on Nannygoat.

What wedding gifts can you add?

Please join your crafty post if, and only if, it corresponds with the category and theme of WEDDING GIFTS. (If it doesn't fit in this category, please link it up to Whatever Goes Wednesday.) Link up crafts, decor, sewing projects, food, tips, etc, that has to do with WEDDING GIFTS. If you have joined a WEDDING GIFTS project to a party on my blog before, feel free to add it to this show too! If you have a lot of mirror projects, please choose your favorites. (Please no more than 4 posts per blog). Link to the specific posts, not to your main blog page.

Let's see what you have created (either recently or in the past)!
You can paste the "Categorically Crafting" button onto your blog post. I would love to see these floating around so more people can post their themed projects. I will leave this linky post open until next CC Show. Keep checking back for more ideas!!!
The next 3 Categorically Crafting Shows are as follows
:
August 13 - Back To School

August 20 - Beach

August 27 - Lamps

And don't forget that this coming week is the Back 2 School Bash here at Someday Crafts. I am still accepting tips, traditions, crafts and giveaways for the week. Please email me at somedaycrafts@gmail.com to participate or submit an idea!

Some Fun Ideas Out There!

I love old stuff!!  Well usually I like new stuff that looks old but look at this CAUTE census art:

I saw THIS over at Sleeping In An Unmade Bed

And how fun is this giant letter??  I think I could actually use this and it wouldn't cost us a dime, since it is all recycled (How Green!!)  Christy's Creative Chaos made this, so make sure you check out THIS project and more over there!!

And don't forget about Whatever Goes Wednesdays starting in a few hours...I can hardly wait!!
