O Christmas Tree!

After delaying getting a Christmas tree for several weeks we finally decided that we HAD to get one if we were going to have one for Christmas morning. So, we went out looking and found what we thought to be an 'okay' tree. The only problem was...we had waited for so long that the tree (which had been sitting in an outdoor lot) was covered in snow which had frozen solid to many of the branches. We decided that wasn't going to deter us and so we bought it, shoved it into the back of Scott's SUV and drove the 3 blocks home.

When we arrived we carefully placed a tarp in the middle of our living room with the tree stand in the center. Scott carefully brought the tree in and instantly the temperature in our house dropped 10 degrees. That tree was FREEZING! Scott's poor hands were going to fall off from carrying the frozen trunk. We finally got it into the stand so it would start to settle and as we were cleaning up residual needles we began to hear it start to rain...well, what we thought to be rain. In fact, it was the snow beginning to melt and drip on the tarp. We covered the tarp with towels in hopes of soaking up all of the water and avoiding a flood. Surprisingly, it worked! Within 2 days we had a tree that now looked 'pretty good' and was ready to be decorated.

{finishing the lights}

We realized that because it was already the 13th we needed to get the tree completely decorated in one night (something that was impossible last year seeing we put about 35 strands of lights on). This year we went a little more mellow with the lights but it actually looked 'good' by the time we were done.

{Aspen is not allowed in the living room so this is where she sat during the entire process. She slowly slid her two front paws onto the forbidden carpet to lay her head on them in her official pouting stance.}

Lastly we put on all of the ornaments. Scott's family had a traditon growing up that his mom would buy each of the kids a Steinbach ornament every year. She would then write their name and the year on it. When they got married, each child got to take their ornaments to start their own tree. Scott and I have decided to continue doing this tradition and still get one ornament every year to share. Since we should be together from now through eternity, we are thinking our tree would be pretty full if we got one each every year. ;) When kiddos come along we will get each of them their own.

{adding the star!}

After all of the ornaments were placed, the floor was vaccummed and the star was placed on top. The tree skirt was added and presents followed.

{a celebration kiss}

And well, in my opinion, the tree turned out 'great'! What do you think?

Goodbye, Champ.

Today is a sad day for me and my family. This morning my childhood dog, Champ, was put to sleep at the age of 12 1/2. We bought Champ when he was only a few weeks old. My brother and I had been begging for a dog for years and my parents finally thought it was the right time. I will never forget the day that they brought him home. They told us they were going grocery shopping and when they returned home they asked if we would come help to unload the groceries. When we walked to the back of the car there he was. A tiny puppy in what appeared to be a large box (actually the size of an orange box). He was shaking and scared. We immediately went to the pet store to pick out all of the things we would need. As we drove we battled about what we would call him. I can't remember all of the proposals but we finally decided upon Champ...or officially...Little Champ Chocka Boy.

Some of the things I will remember most about Champ are...

-For the first couple of weeks he wouldn't go on a walk like a normal dog. He was too scared. We would put his leash on him, pick him up and walk with him. Occasionally we would set him down to see if he needed to go to the bathroom or would be okay to walk next to us. Nope. All he wanted to do was be held.
-Champ squatted like a girl dog when going to the bathroom for the longest time! We were a little concerned...
-After quickly getting over the whole 'no walking on walks' thing, he broke about 3 leashes from pulling so hard. I can't tell you how many times that leash was ripped from my hand as he took off after a cat, child or plastic bottle lying in the road.
-The boards my dad had to put up when he was a puppy because he was so small he could fit between the house and his kennel.
-In order to get all of Champ's energy out my dad would take us to the end of our street (which was a very long road) and take off running as fast as he could. Champ would follow and Patrick or I would be holding the leash while strapped into our roller blades. We loved it! Once my mom found out that is what we were doing she put an end to it... :)
-Patrick and I giving Champ a bath in the front yard using my mom's shampoo
-Champ sneaking over to the elementary school to play with all of the kids during recess
-'Dancing' with Champ
-Looking for Champ time and time again when he would run away to go explore the neighborhood.
-Jumping on the tramp with Champ underneath us or watching him steal a green pepper from the garden.
-Him being smart enough to learn how to lift up the latch to his kennel gate.
-Dressing Champ up in clothes to take pictures of him with Patrick's missionary tag. (We sent those to Patrick on his mission)
-Long walks with Dad & Champ where we talked about everything.
-Trips to 'the hollow' where Champ sniffed everything in sight and played in the water.
-Being greeted every day after I walked home from elementary, got off the bus in jr. high, pulled in from high school...or when I came home from college.
-Running around with Aspen and playing together for hours.

We will miss you, Champ. But, we will also never forget all of the fun times we had with you and for the times that you brought us together as a family. Love, Hydee

The Hap, Hap, Happiest Christmas Since Bing Crosby Danced With...

Christmas celebrations are now in full force around here. Though it did take us awhile to get a tree and put up decorations, we are finally on a countdown to the day when Jolly Ole' Saint Nick will be breaking and entering to do some reverse thievery. Some of the things we have done so far are:

*Attended the First Presidency Christmas Devotional with Hydee's family.
*Enjoyed the first real snow of the season despite it being freezing cold and having to drive to work extra early
*Put beautiful icicle lights on the outside of our house and wrapped our railings with the colored ones
*Attended my work Christmas party
*Picked out, purchased and set up a real snow covered Christmas tree.
*Attended the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert with guests Natalie Cole and David McCullough (author of 1776 and John Adams)

*Decorated gingerbread houses with Tyler, Chelsea, Henry, Jack, Ella & Cole

{finished products}
*Addressed Christmas cards (still haven't quite sent them)
*Put up decorations--even though several of them broke as I lost my balance and dropped the cheap Sterilite container
*Finished putting up decorations once I had cooled off
*Bought scented pine cones which make everything smell oh so nice

*Attended Henry's Christmas program

We are still looking forward to other of our favorite traditions in the next couple of weeks...
*Watching Elf and Christmas Vacation
*Playing Monopoly on Christmas day
*Reading Christmas stories
*Going to see the Christmas lights on Temple Square
*Bundling up to go sledding
*Snuggling up by the fire and drinking hot chocolate made from the Cocoa-motion machine (a necessity for every cold winter's night)
*Putting ornaments on the Christmas tree
*Laying our stockings out for Santa to come
*Putting out carrots for reindeer & gluten-free cookies for Santa...what if he has Celiac's too? Better safe than sorry...
*Attending our family Christmas party (which is always entertaining in one way or another)
*Reading Luke 2 together on Christmas Eve

Whirlwind Update

We have had so much going on that updating the blog has been pushed to the back burner. At the end of this lovely 5 day weekend I am finally getting around to updating the details of the last few weeks of our lives...enjoy!

The first week of November we had a fun visit from Scott's sister (Ashley) and our niece (Ava) who flew in from Houston to sit in at Mom and Dad's farewell. Wednesday afternoon Ashley, Ava, Mom and I enjoyed a fun afternoon shopping and chatting before meeting up with the rest of the crew for a lovely dinner at Trios in celebration of the November birthdays in the family...yeah, there are 4 of them. Unfortunately the North Carolinians couldn't be there to join in on the fun.

Sunday the 8th we had the chance to attend Mom and Dad's mission farewell. They both did a fabulous job and dazzled us with their sweet French skills. It was a sweet experience for them and I think it was touching to them to see the love and support of many family members and friends who were in attendance. After the meeting we all went over to their home for dinner which was delicous as usual.

Friday the 13th we headed up to Kaysville to celebrate the birthdays of my Dad (13th) and Patrick (14th). We all met up at Fiesta Guadalajara and followed dinner up with a trip to the Kaysville Theater to see Love Happens.

Sunday the 15th we were able to go to the setting apart of Mom & Dad. Once again it was a wondeful experience for us and we were so glad that we had the opportunity to attend. Cute Henry vocalized his desire to leave with Nana and Papa and I think we all were feeling the same way.

Mom & Dad spent a week in the MTC and then left the following Monday. Sunday the 22nd (the night before they left) we all got together to say our final goodbyes and do a video conference with the entire family.

Thanksgiving Day we worked around the house in the morning and then went up to Kaysville to spend the day with everyone on my side. All of the food was great and the company was even better. Scott and I crashed for about 2 1/2 hours after the meal with full stomachs and happy hearts.

Yesterday we had the chance to go into my mom's office to watch the BYU vs. Utah football game. Though there were undoubtedly some missed calls it was still a fun game to watch and the outcome was exactly what we expected with BYU coming up with the win. :)

SYTYCD Concert

Last weekend my mom and I tagged along with the cousins to go support Randi at the SYTYCD concert. We all started with dinner at Texas Roadhouse and then off for a bit of shopping. I got the most amazing hat which I am stoked about wearing sometime soon as well as a new pair of jeans...yeah, finally decided to try out the skinny jeans trend. My ankles are still feeling just a big claustrophobic but hopefully I'll soon get over that.

We got to the E Center for the big show just before it started and found our seats on the floor just a few rows back. As usual, all of the dancers did awesome and it was so much fun watching them in person. Randi and Evan did the 'butt dance' which is a personal favorite and it was fun to go crazy with the rest of the family while she was up there. :)

After the show we were all able to go backstage to meet all the dancers. It is amazing to think that just a few months ago each of them were living a relatively normal life and are now submerged into the world of celebrities. I loved watching all of the teenage girls (and some adult males) scream when they saw Kopono or jump up and down excitedly when they talked to Brandon. Since all of us were wearing our "Vote for Randi" t-shirts, the dancers could easily identify all friends and family of Randi and were really sweet to us. I was lucky enough to get pictures with all of the top 10 and the 2 guests they brought on tour (Phillip & Caitlyn).

{with Evan}

{with Janette}

{with Jason}

{with Jeanine}

Thanks, Mom for buying my ticket and being my date for the evening! As usual, I'm glad we got to party together. :)

Look What I Can Do...

Last Christmas Scott and I were walking around doing some Christmas shopping when I complained to him that I didn't have an apron. We decided to stop at a kiosk in University Mall to take a peek at how much they were. Wow...25 bucks just so I don't spill on myself. "What a joke!" I said. "I can definitely make one for less than that! Plus, I may as well just buy a new shirt because that is less than these aprons would be!" (Yeah, hold your comments on me being a cheapskate...) Scott encouraged me to "Just get one..." while I threw a minor tantrum on how expensive a stupid apron is.

Fast forward to 1 month ago. My mom calls me up and says, "Hey, for my ward's super Saturday we are going to make aprons. I thought it would be fun if you came up and we made them together." Sweet. The perfect opportunity to prove that I could make one of those dinky things and save myself some moo-lah.

So, of course I waited until the night before to go to the fabric store. I had my little supply list in hand and knew exactly the type of fabric I wanted. I walked in, looked around and ah, alas, found exactly what I was looking for. Scott and I walked to the counter to have them cut me 3 yards and woah....$33.00 later I was walking out of the store. So much for saving moo-lah. Scott chuckled at me under his breath but knew better than to bring up the fact that we actually could have saved money by me getting a pre-made one.

The next day I drove to Kaysville to get my sewing on. I cut out the pattern, simple enough...and started sewing straight lines. Easy right? Well, it turns out that we were making flouncy aprons. (Who needs flouce anyway?!) The frustration began to set in when we started sewing around the curves and people around me started saying things like, "Okay, so you are going to want to unpick that." and "You need to take a fold in the fabric." Part of me wanted to stand up and yell, "Speak English you sewing Nazi or focus on your own project!" while the other part of me wanted to lie at their feet and beg, "Please, for the love of Pete, help my sewing incompetence!" After about 5 hours of solid work we finally finished. Here are the final products...

Despite the imperfections in the final product, I think it turned out pretty cute. I've decided I'm totally going to get back on the horse and make another one but definitely not in one sitting.

BTH's road trip, A's wedding, Peanut Butter Pancakes & PVC Pipe

Last weekend me and my girls crammed (thanks to Brielle's suitcase...haha) into the Anderson 4 Runner for a 9 hour drive to Elk Grove. The occasion...to see Ashley get hitched of course! We left on Thursday night and stopped at a hotel to sleep at about the halfway point. While the "Val U Motel" was less than ideal, we did get a kick out of the fact that when our door would not shut the lady at the front desk said, "Oh, okay. Well let me go and grab the drill...All of these locks were installed at the same time and so this happens!" Oh, but that wasn't after her saying, "Well, have you tried putting the card in and then turning the handle while you close it?" Hmmm...I wonder how you do that from the inside. :)

After a short sleep we got up and hit the road again. We arrived in Elk Grove around 10:30 and after some serious issues with the GPS finally made it to 0.0 miles and arrived at our destination. We had all heard so much about Ashley's house that it was surreal to be there. We saw the pond, the bridge, the backyard pool and the infamous picture hanging above the computer desk. Gotta love it all.

We all took quick showers and changed into some presentable clothing before hitting the town. Our first stop was to In-N-Out but not before driving by some of Ashley's other hot spots. Elk Grove High School, the spot where Ashley ran over a piece of scrap metal, the "White House" and of course numerous soccer fields which Ashley played on. Lunch was followed by waxing/nails. (Ashley waxed, I had my nails done, Tara & Bri were our cheerleaders) By this time they needed us back at the house to help with reception preparations. The 4 of us had quite the time moving a pile of PVC irrigation pipes while trying not to run into a large pile of firewood or tree trunks. Eventually we took care of it and went next door to meet the Schmokels (the family we were going to be staying with).

A bachelorette party for Ashley was thrown at a restaurant in downtown Sacramento on Friday night. All of the girlies enjoyed getting to know each other a little better and sharing in Ashley's anticipation and excitement. The parking ticket we found on the car when we finished eating was no damper to our moods. On our way home from dinner we stopped to get earrings to coordinate with our sassy red bridesmaids dresses. We enjoyed the time together laughing and reminiscing about past experiences.

Before going to bed we had several preparations to take care of--ironing our dresses, painting, toenails, gathering all of Ashley's things and practicing our infamous dance. We were shocked when Ashley's younger brother, Tanner, started bustin' out the dance moves himself. I don't think any of us have laughed that hard in a long time.

Saturday morning...wedding day...we woke up around 6:00 and head over to grab Ashley so we could take her to her hair appointment. We all did our own hair and make up in the living room of Ashley's stylist so we would be ready to take her to the mall at 9:00 to get her make-up done. Ashley looked absolutely stunning with her hair pinned to perfection and her make-up just right. She definitely had the look of a glowing bride.

On the way to the temple there were moments when one or all of us would suddenly burst into tears. Whether it was during a love song or talking about how happy we were for soon-to-be Mrs. Petersen, emotions were definitely close to the surface. It is strange how much like sisters we have become. I like to think of my BATH girls as the sisters I never had. :)

We arrived in front of the beautiful Sacramento Temple at 10:00 a.m....just in time. Ashley and I went inside by ourselves and left our other half outside to wait. (I really just feel bad for whoever gets married last and has to wait outside the temple alone!)

{they are available fellas...}
The ceremony was beautiful. Ashley and David have truly never looked happier. I feel so honored to have been able to be there for their sealing and to share in their special day.

After the ceremony we took pictures outside the temple and then ran to get a couple of pictures developed to display at the reception. We made a quick stop at the luncheon to get a quick bite to eat and then left to prepare for the reception. Everything turned out to be so beautiful. The food was delicious, the weather was perfect, there were lots of guests, and dancing...yeah, the dancing...

Traditional wedding practices of cutting the cake, tossing the bouquet, throwing the garter, the 'first dance' and father/daughter-mother/son dances were followed by our very own tradition of dancing the 'Bye, Bye, Bye" dance. Ashley rocked her wedding gown as us girls did our best to remember all the steps. As usual, Tara led the pack when it came to remembering. Luckily we were able to get the whole thing on video (something we didn't do at my wedding)....I'll try to figure out how to post it when I get it off of Tara's camera. We also added our own little twist to the end which turned out pretty cute.

As the bride and groom left the reception we lined the driveway with sparklers to send them off. It was the perfect close to their perfect day.

Being exhausted we decided to go over to the Schmokels to hit the hay early. When we got over there the doors were locked and there was no answer at their door. We were certain we had offended them...long story about not eating their peanut butter pancakes...but eventually they came home and we were able to get in. Oh, but not after going back to the Darm's and hearing
Ashley's parents tell us about their own wedding night...those 2 crack me up.

Sunday morning we went to a 9 a.m. sacrament meeting and then started back to Utah. In the car we read Jack Weyland's new book, slept, talked, sang and...drove. A little after 8:00 p.m. I walked in the door with just enough time to relax for a bit and snuggle up with hubby before finishing up my busy weekend.

Keep your eyes peeled for details about Scott's eventful weekend as a bachelor... ;)
