Dolanan songs played in the genjring style by the Langen Sari Group with Imas Masriyah, Kontrak and Kompor. Dolanan songs are songs sung by children while playing games, usually, in a dolanan song there is an element of learning with the choice of words that contain noble values in accordance with local traditions. The songs contain moral teachings such as serving parents by diligently studying, living in harmony and living to preserve the surrounding environment. GET IT HERE Enjoy!

Here's a wonderful cassette with Sintrenan songs played in the genjring style by the Langen Sari Group with Imas Masriyah singing and comedians Kontrak and Kompor also singing, joking and talking and there's a bunch of kids singing too.... Sintrenan songs are songs, part of the mystical tradition, still very much alive in places in West and Central Java like Cirebon (where this cassette is from), Kuningan, Majalengka, Indramayu, Pemalang, Pekalongan, Brebes, Banyumas, Subang and Jatibarang to name a few.... Female dancers, always pure, meaning always virgins, dance and get possesed by angels.... It ties into the stories about the goddess Dewi Lanjar, Queen of the Northern Sea (the goddess Nyai Roro Kidul is the Queen of the Southern Sea)....

Genjring is a form of music and acrobatics that you only find in certain areas around Cirebon, Kuningan and Majalengka. Only women do this type of acrobatics, it started in the 1940's. In the beginning they only accompanied it with a kind of tambourine but through the years more and more instruments were added. It's very close to tarling music.... Before they start with the acrobatics they do a dance first, called the Rudat dance which is very much tied to the propagation of Islam....

Fantastic genjring cassette from Lilis Kasiri and Kontrak with the Genjring Putri Kuda Hidup Group. On other genjring cassettes their group is called the Genjring Kuda Kecil Group, they probably changed the name of the group because those other cassettes were put out with another company.... Genjring is the music that is played while female acrobats do their thing showing off amazing feats of strength, in the Cirebon aera in west-Java.... Totally loving this tape!!!

Great genjring cassette from Kasbullah and his Genjring Kuda Kecil group with Itih S., Lilis Kasiri, Kontrak and Saturi....

In 1964 an artist from Bayalangu, a village close to Cirebon, called Kasbullah started his own genjring group called Genjring Kuda Kecil (Little Horse Genjring) and his daughter, Lilis Kasiri is also singing on this cassette.... Lilis got married with a man named Karyadi and when Kasbullah became too old he took over the group.... I think the group still exists to this day although I'm not sure who's leading it now....

These acrobatics are pretty amazing and some of these women show amazing strength, like this performer, known as Wonder Woman who is able to lift a motor cycle with her feet:
