Jean Michael Jarre - Images (Best of)

Genere: Progressive, New Age, Avant Garde

Similar Artists: Yanni, Tomita, Vangelis

Recording Year: Epic, 1991.

Celebrated as the European electronic music community's premier ambassador, composer Jean-Michel Jarre elevated the synthesizer to new peaks of popularity during the 1970s, in the process emerging as an international superstar renowned for his dazzling concert spectacles. The son of the famed film composer Maurice Jarre, he was born August 24, 1948, in Lyon, France, and began studying piano at the age of five. Abandoning classical music as a youth, Jarre became enamored of jazz before forming a rock band called Mystere IV; in 1968, he became a pupil of the musique concrète pioneer Pierre Schaeffer, joining Groupe de Recherches Musicales. His early experiments in electro-acoustic music yielded the 1971 single "La Cage"; the full-length Deserted Palace followed a year later.

Jarre's early works were largely unsuccessful, and gave little indication of the work to follow. As he struggled to find his own voice, he wrote for a variety of singers, including Françoise Hardy, and also composed for films. Seeking to push electronic music away from its minimalist foundations as well as the formal abstractions of its most experimental practitioners, he slowly developed the orchestrated melodicism of his 1977 breakthrough effort, Oxygène, an enormous commercial hit that reached the number two spot on the U.K. pop charts. The follow-up, 1978's Equinoxe, was also a smash, and a year later Jarre held the first in a series of massive open-air concerts at the Place de la Concorde in Paris, the estimated one million spectators on hand earning him a place in The Guinness Book of World Records.

Only in the wake of 1981's Les Chants Magnétiques (Magnetic Fields) did Jarre mount a proper tour, traveling to China with a staggering amount of stage equipment in tow; the five performances, performed backed by some 35 traditional instrumentalists, later generated the LP Concerts in China. Released in 1983, Music for Supermarkets instantly became one of the most collectible albums in history -- recorded for an art exhibit, only one copy was ever pressed, selling at a charity auction for close to $10,000. The master was then incinerated, guaranteeing the record's rarity. Jarre's next proper release was 1984's Zoolook, which failed to connect with audiences with the same success as its predecessors.

A two-year hiatus followed before he resurfaced on April 5, 1986, with an extravagant live performance in Houston celebrating NASA's silver anniversary; in addition to the over one million in attendance, it was also broadcast on global television. Rendez-Vous appeared a few weeks later, and after another highly visual live date in Lyon, France, Jarre assembled the best material from the two events as the 1987 concert LP Cities in Concert: Houston/Lyon. Revolutions, featuring the legendary Shadows guitarist Hank B. Marvin, followed in 1988, and a year later a third concert LP, dubbed simply Jarre Live, hit stores. After 1990's En Attendant Cousteau (Waiting for Cousteau), Jarre mounted his biggest live experience yet, with an attendance of over two and a half million fans converging on Paris to see him perform in honor of Bastille Day.

The decade to follow proved surprisingly quiet, however, and apart from the occasional live appearance Jarre was largely removed from the limelight; finally, in 1997 he issued Oxygène 7-13, updating his concepts for a new musical era. At the turn of the millennium, he recorded Metamorphoses and then took a break from the studio as a flurry of reissues and remixes followed, including Sessions 2000, Les Granges Brulees, and Odyssey Through O2. In 2007, after a seven-year hiatus from recording, Jarre released a new dance single, "Teo and Tea," a surprisingly strong return to electro, and followed it with a trancey, angular album also titled Teo and Tea.

Texas - Mothers Heaven

Genere: Indie Rock, Adult contemporary, Brit Pop.

Similar Artists: Everything but the girl, Aztec Camera, Ry Cooder.

Recording Year: Mercury, 1991.

Despite taking their name from one of the 50 United States of America and adopting several American-sounding musical styles, the Scottish pop/rock band Texas found nearly all its success in Europe starting in the late '80s, including the multi-million selling albums Southside, White on Blonde, and The Hush, and a series of hit singles such as "Say What You Want," "In Our Lifetime," and "Summer Son."

Bass player Johnny McElhone (born April 21, 1963, Glasgow, Scotland) organized the band in Glasgow in 1986. McElhone, a veteran of the bands Altered Images and Hipsway, brought in singer and rhythm guitarist Sharleen Spiteri (born November 7, 1967, Glasgow, Scotland), lead guitarist Ally McErlaine (born October 31, 1968, Glasgow, Scotland), and drummer Stuart Kerr (born March 16, 1963, Glasgow, Scotland). The group took its name from the film Paris, Texas, which had boasted a score by Ry Cooder, whose slide guitar playing heavily influenced McErlaine, and Spiteri sang without any discernible Scottish accent, giving the band a distinctly American sound. Texas made its concert debut in March 1988 at Dundee University in Scotland. McElhone's previous connection with Mercury Records through Hipsway led to the label's signing the band, which initially tried to record with Bernard Edwards of Chic as producer before settling on Tim Palmer instead. The first result of this association was the single "I Don't Want a Lover," the initial effort of the writing team of Spiteri and McElhone, which Mercury released in the U.K. in January 1989. On March 4, it peaked at number eight. Southside (the title referring to a neighborhood of Glasgow), the debut album, was released in March and peaked at number three at the end of the month. As Texas toured the U.K. and Europe, three more singles were released from the album, but failed to reach the Top 40; nevertheless, Southside eventually sold more than two million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, Mercury released "I Don't Want a Lover" and Southside in the U.S. in July. The single broke into Billboard's Album Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks radio charts before finally entering the Hot 100, where it peaked at number 77 on September 30; the album peaked at number 88 a week later.

Texas continued to tour Europe in 1990 before beginning work on their second album. Kerr left and was replaced on the drums by Richard Hynd (born June 17, 1965, Aberdeen, Scotland), and keyboard player Eddie Campbell (born July 6, 1965, Glasgow, Scotland), who had been playing with them live, became an official member of the band. Mothers Heaven was released in September 1991 and proved to be a commercial disappointment, peaking at number 32 in the U.K. on October 5. In the U.S., the track "In My Heart" reached the Modern Rock Tracks chart as Texas made its first visit to the country in November, but the album failed to chart. "Alone with You," the album's third single, returned them to the British Top 40, reaching number 32 on February 15, 1992, but their first substantial hit single since "I Don't Want a Lover" was a one-off cover of Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone," which peaked at number 19 on May 9.

Anne Clark - Joined up writing

Genere: Electronic, Post Punk, Alternative

Similar Artists: Eyeless in Gaza

Recording Year: Beehive Trading Ltd, 1991.

Anne Clark (born 14 May 1960, Croydon, London, England) is an English poet and songwriter. Her first recording was The Sitting Room in 1982, and she has released over a dozen albums since then. Her experimental music occupies a region bounded roughly by electronic, dance (techno applies on occasion) and possibly avant-garde genres, with varying hard as well as romantic and orchestral styles. Clark is mainly a spoken word artist, but she also plays piano and occasionally accompanies herself, with piano and voice mixing in a somewhat atypical New Wave style. Many of her lyrics deal critically with the imperfections of humanity, everyday life, and politics. Especially in her early works she has created a gloomy, melancholy kind of atmosphere bordering on weltschmerz.

Recognized in America for the 1987 modern rock radio curio "Hope Road," Anne Clark's contributions to the alternative genre are often ignored; or perhaps she's too obscure to receive the proper credit. Clark made her debut in 1982 with the album The Sitting Room. A poetic songwriter and gifted pianist, Clark gained a devout legion of fans during the '80s, although commercial success was never within reach. Because of her experiments with both dance music and more elaborate orchestral pieces, Clark won the approval of club denizens and indie purists. However, "Hope Road" was the closest she came to a pop hit. The track is often resurrected by modern rock radio DJs who want to break the monotony of Top 40 new wave on flashback programs, but it doesn't truly reflect Clark's personal, idiosyncratic body of work. In 1994, Beehive released The Best of Anne Clark, a retrospective that, oddly enough, didn't include "Hope Road."

Shadow Project - Shadow Project

Genere: Goth Rock

Similar artists: Christian Death, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy

Recording year : Triple X Entertainment, 1991.

Shadow Project is a goth band formed in the early 1990s with Rozz Williams and Eva O. The band's (self titled) first album included bassist Jill Emery and drummer Thomas Morgan.

William Faith and Stevyn Grey joined the line-up for the Dreams For The Dying tour and recording albums. They mixed a blend of different styles ranging from punk to metal to Roxy Music and David Bowie.

The band first began in 1987 in San Francisco. The band was named after a study of the effects of nuclear bombs in Hiroshima. The whole purpose behind its formation was for Rozz and Eva to make something for themselves. Rozz had realized that not much was happening in the United States when it came to the deathrock scene. No matter where it was he and Eva had gone to, be it Los Angeles or San Francisco, there was still nothing happening "In their eyes" so they had formed Shadow Project to create something for themselves.

Front 242 - Tyranny for you

Género: Industrial, electro industrial

Artistas similares: Meat Beat Manifesto, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb

Group formed in Brussels, in 1981, when the programmers Patrick Codenys and Dirk Bergen were united to record and to send the Principles disc. A year later, the programmer Daniel Bressanutti (alias Daniel B. Prothese) and the singer Jean-Light De Meyer include to the formation. The name of Front 242 is, according to some explanations, gived to the group by political reasons, based on a resolution of the UN, the 242, in which Israel had to retire of the occupied territories of Palestine. Thus its name comes to be something as well as the Front 242 that retires to Israel of Palestine, or interpreted according to the ideology of the group, would be the advance of the weak one on the fort. The quartet appeared for the first time in 1982 with the simple U-Men and the Geography album, engraving for Red Rhino Europe Records (RRE). Front 242 live initiated its presentations shortly after that same year. Finally the percussionist Geoff Bellingham was added that soon was replaced by an ex- assistant, Richard 23 (Richard Jonckheere). The key of its success was the combination of technological influences already used by groups in Germany, but with a touch of aggressiveness that would give beginning to a entirely new style, worked later by groupings like Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps. Skinny Puppy, Frontline Assembly, among others.
