Tuxedomoon - Holywars

Genere: Rock/Pop.
Styles: Alternative, New Wave, Indie.
Similar Artist: Residents, Cabaret Voltaire, Devo.
Record Year: Cramboy, 1985.

Tuxedomoon is an avant-garde, electronic-oriented collective whose music ranges from new wave pop to jazz fusion to more experimental synthesizer soundscapes (usually including saxophone and violin), which were frequently married in concert to performance-art shows. Tuxedomoon was formed in San Francisco in 1977 by two electronic music students at San Francisco City College, Blaine L. Reininger (keyboards, violin) and Steven Brown (keyboards, other instruments).

Brown's local theater connections supplied equipment and occasional vocalists in Gregory Cruikshank and Victoria Lowe, plus more frequent contributions from singer and performance artist Winston Tong. Punk and new wave were opening up the San Francisco music scene at the time, and Tuxedomoon landed an opening slot for Devo in 1978 at around the same time they cut their first single, "Pinheads on the Move." Lowe quit the band before their first EP, No Tears, which featured off-and-on members Michael Belfer (guitar) and Paul Zahl (drums). Tong and Belfer departed temporarily, and Peter Principle (b. Peter Dachert) joined as a full-time member. Tuxedomoon signed to the Residents' Ralph Records in 1979, which eventually got them overseas exposure.

Feeling that their ideas were more in tune with the European electronic music scene, the band toured Europe after 1980's Half Mute, for which Tong returned with filmmaker and visual artist Bruce Geduldig. After 1981's Desire, the band relocated in an artist's commune in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Within a year though they were forced to leave and moved to Brussels, to find first shelter in the Plan K. (a live p.a. club). Reininger began to branch out as a solo artist. Tuxedomoon was also hired to score a Maurice Bejart ballet, the results of which were released in 1982 as Divine. Reininger left for a solo career in 1983 and was replaced by Frankie Lievaart and horn player Luc Van Lieshout.

In between side projects and scoring, the band sought an international deal for their forthcoming LP Holy Wars; it was eventually released in 1985 and became the band's biggest commercial success. Tong left the group for good that year, leaving Brown and Principle the only remaining San Francisco members; multi-instrumentalist Ivan Georgiev was hired to replenish the group's sound for 1986's Ship of Fools album and tour. Scoring work from past projects has been reissued in Belgium. Reininger, Brown, Principle and Lieshout still record together as Tuxedomoon, whilst Reininger, Brown, Principle and Tong have all recorded as solo artists.

Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels

Genere: Pop/Rock.
Style: Alternative, Indie, Post Punk.
Similar artists: Breathless, Curve, Dif Juz.
Recording year: 4AD, 1983.

A group whose distinctly ethereal and gossamer sound virtually defined the enigmatic image of the record label 4AD, Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland, in 1979. Taking their name from an obscure song from fellow Scots Simple Minds, the Cocteaus were originally formed by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie and later rounded out by Guthrie's girlfriend Elizabeth Fraser, an utterly unique performer whose swooping, operatic vocals relied less on any recognizable language than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions.

In 1982, the trio signed to 4AD, the arty British label then best known as the home of the Birthday Party, whose members helped the Cocteaus win a contract. The group debuted with Garlands, which offered an embryonic taste of their rapidly developing, atmospheric sound, crafted around Guthrie's creative use of distorted guitars, tape loops, and echo boxes and anchored in Heggie's rhythmic bass as well as an omnipresent Roland 808 drum machine. Shortly after the release of the Peppermint Pig EP, Heggie left the group, and Guthrie and Fraser cut 1983's Head Over Heels as a duo; nonetheless, the album largely perfected the Cocteaus' gauzy formula, and established the foundation from which the group would continue to work for the duration of its career.

Head Over Heels. The album introduces a variety of different shadings and approaches to the incipient Cocteaus sound, pointing the band towards the exultant, elegant beauty of later releases. Opening number "When Mama Was Moth" demonstrates the new musical range nicely; Fraser's singing is much more upfront, while Guthrie creates a bewitching mix of dark guitar notes and sparkling keyboard tones, with percussion echoing in the background. Other songs, like the sax-accompanied "Five Ten Fiftyfold" and "The Tinderbox (Of a Heart)" reflect the more elaborate musical melancholy of the group, while still other cuts are downright sprightly. "Multifoiled" in particular is a charm, a jazzily-arranged number that lets Fraser do a bit of scatting (a perfect avenue for her lyrical approach!), while "In the Gold Dust Rush" mixes acoustic guitar drama into Fraser's swooping singing. Perhaps the two strongest numbers of all are: "Sugar Hiccup," mixing the mock choir effect the band would use elsewhere with both a lovely guitar line and singing; and "Musette and Drums," a massive, powerful collision of Guthrie's guitar at its loudest and most powerful and Fraser's singing at its most intense.

The second monicker in the continuing evolution that finally birthed the Cult, Death Cult was formed in 1983 by Ian Astbury, who had recently dissolved Southern Death Cult. He teamed up with guitarist Billy Duffy (ex-Theatre of Hate), bassist Jamie Stewart (ex-Ritual), and drummer Ray Mondo to release an EP on Situation Two in mid-1983. Nigel Preston replaced Mondo in the fall, and another EP appeared later in 1983. By the end of the year, however, Death Cult had become the Cult.

Bel Canto - Birds Of Passage

Genere: Alternative Rock

Similar Artists: Minimal Compact, Delerium, Dead Can Dance

Recording Year: Netwerk, 1989.

The atmospheric, melancholy, somewhat medieval soundscapes of Bel Canto (Italian for "beautiful song") mix an essentially synth-based, chamber-rock sound with a wide range of orchestral and folk instruments and have been compared to the Cocteau Twins. The group hails from Norway and consists of ethereal vocalist Anneli Marian Drecker, plus Nils Johansen and Geir Jenssen. The group claims to draw its inspiration from powerful energy fields, including those of the female and the earth's gravitational pull; additionally, their compositions sometimes draw on world music and the ambient experiments of Brian Eno. Bel Canto released its first album, White-Out Conditions, in 1987. After 1989's Birds of Passage, they recorded 1992's Shimmering, Warm and Bright and 1996's Magic Box.

Beginning the band's second album with something that almost exactly resembled Depeche Mode in 1986 may or may not have been intentional, but when Drecker's vocals slid alongside the music with a quietly desperate lyric, "Intravenous" became much more distinctly Bel Canto. Here, the band's music is a touch -- just a touch -- more upfront, with Drecker's vocals a little more to the fore, if not exactly in one's face. Whether it's due to their increasing confidence in performing or just a decision on the part of the band, the effect has helped Bel Canto become an even more distinct unit. Ironically enough, there are actually many more performers on this record, with six guest musicians fleshing out the sound in a variety of ways, from strings and percussion to "stardust," as co-producer Gilles Martin is amusingly credited with. There are still times on Birds where other bands are called to mind quite strongly, to a higher degree than on White-Out. "The Glassmaker," while energetic and great to listen to, is as close as one can get to the Cocteau Twins, especially with Drecker's wordless singing. All it takes is the next song, "A Shoulder to the Wheel," with its cool synth backing and slightly strident but still lovely main melody, to stay the course, with Drecker's vocals steering their own lovely direction. Johansen takes a vocal turn with Drecker on "Time Without End," which is understated but quite fine, with a striking synth break. Otherwise, he and Jenssen concentrate strictly on the music, sometimes a bit softer at points than on White-Out but often capturing the blend of cool beauty and drama once again, and at points foreshadowing the astonishing later of work of In the Nursery. The group's eclectic roots surface in intriguing ways, as they do on "Oyster," whcih subtly quotes Gary Numan's "Cars," but then transforms into a more openly passionate, orchestrated number.

Nine Inch Nails - Quiet (2009) Not in stores yet!!

Genere: Industrial Metal, Alternative Rock

Similar Artists: Foetus, Pig, KMFDM

Recording Year: The Null Corporation, 2009.

Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience. It isn't really accurate to call NIN a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who always remained solely responsible for NIN's musical direction (he was, however, supported in concert by a regular backing band). Unlike the vast majority of industrial artists, Reznor wrote melodic, traditionally structured songs where lyrics were a focal point. His pop instincts not only made the harsh electronic beats of industrial music easier to digest, but also put a human face on a style that usually tried to sound as mechanical as possible. While Ministry crossed over to heavy metal audiences, NIN built up a large alternative rock fan base right around the time of Nirvana's mainstream breakthrough. As a result, Reznor became a genuine star and his notoriously dark, brooding persona and provocateur instincts made him a Jim Morrison-esque sex symbol for the '90s. A long period of inactivity and writer's block followed, which gave virtually every alternative metal band of the late '90s a chance to rip off elements of NIN's sound. By the time Reznor's five-year hiatus finally ended, he was still a popular figure but his commercial momentum had slowed somewhat.

Michael Trent Reznor was born May 17, 1965, in the small town of Mercer, PA; he went by his middle name to avoid confusion with his father, Michael. At age five, Reznor's parents divorced and he wound up being raised mostly by his maternal grandparents; even so, Reznor stated repeatedly that his childhood was mostly happy. He began playing the piano at age five, studying classical music, and later learned tenor sax and tuba in the school band; he also acted in musicals and became an avid Kiss fan. Reznor spent a year studying music and computers at Allegheny College, but dropped out after a year to pursue music full-time; he soon packed up and moved to Cleveland with high school friend Chris Vrenna. Around the same time, he was discovering new wave and assorted underground music; he was most fascinated with early industrial, since it offered an edgy, aggressive way to use electronic instruments. At age 19, he successfully auditioned to join an AOR band called the Innocent, which released one album, Livin' in the Streets (Reznor's picture does appear on the jacket). He quit the Innocent after just three months and subsequently gigged with local bands; he also worked in a keyboard store and as a janitor in the local Right Track recording studio. Eventually, he became a studio engineer, teaching himself various computer applications and working on his own material during off hours. In 1987, Reznor appeared in the Michael J. Fox/Joan Jett film Light of Day, where he played keyboards with a trio dubbed the Problems during a bar scene.

As Nine Inch Nails, Reznor began recording his own Ministry- and Skinny Puppy-influenced compositions in 1988, playing all the instruments himself. At first, he simply hoped to release a 12" single on a small European label, but when he sent demo tapes to around ten American labels, nearly every one offered him a deal. He wound up signing with TVT, which released NIN's debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, in 1989 (after having rejected an initial effort called Industrial Nation). Reznor quickly assembled a backing band and toured with Skinny Puppy for a short time, but soon tired of playing for strictly industrial artists. With a tighter outfit featuring Chris Vrenna on drums and Richard Patrick on guitar (plus several revolving-door keyboardists), he consciously chose to open for alt-rock acts (including, early on, the Jesus and Mary Chain and Peter Murphy), partly for the challenge of winning over fans who might not have liked industrial music. The strategy helped expand Nine Inch Nails' fan base substantially; the single "Down in It" got some airplay in dance clubs, reaching Billboard's dance and modern rock charts, and MTV later picked up on the video for the more rock-oriented "Head Like a Hole." In 1991, after settling on keyboardist James Woolley, Nine Inch Nails became part of the inaugural Lollapalooza tour, which expanded their fan base by leaps and bounds. Pretty Hate Machine's momentum kept building slowly, and although it never climbed higher than number 75, it spent over two years on the album charts and eventually sold over a million copies -- one of the first indie-label rock albums to do so.

TVT had a massive hit on their hands, and to ensure that Reznor would produce another one, they attempted to take control of the follow-up's creative direction. Enraged by the outside meddling, Reznor tried to secure a release from his contract, leading to a vicious court battle. His only recording outlets were side projects; in 1990, he co-wrote and sang on "Suck," a track on Pigface's debut album, Gub, and also sang on the Al Jourgensen-led 1000 Homo DJs cover of Black Sabbath's "Supernaut." (TVT ordered Reznor's vocals removed from the track, but Jourgensen actually just altered them slightly and said he'd re-recorded it.) Eventually, he was able to sign with Interscope, which helped him set up his own label, the Cleveland-based Nothing imprint. Reznor had been recording new material on the sly, and in 1992 Nothing released the EP Broken as well as a concurrent remix disc titled Fixed. Broken featured more (and heavier) guitars than Pretty Hate Machine, partly in response to NIN's live sound and partly as a sonic evocation of Reznor's boiling frustration in the wake of the legal wars; it also featured two bonus cuts, a version of "Suck" and the Adam Ant cover "(You're So) Physical," a nod to Reznor's new wave roots. Despite many reviews characterizing the EP as a harrowing, difficult listen, Broken -- supported by NIN's now-considerable fan base -- debuted in the Top Ten and the first single/video, "Wish," won a Grammy for Best Heavy Metal Performance. Reznor enhanced his reputation as a provocateur with a widely banned clip for "Happiness in Slavery," which depicted S&M performance artist Bob Flanagan being torn apart by a machine; there was also a long-form clip for Broken that was never released commercially due to its graphic content (a torture victim is dismembered while viewing NIN videos).

Reznor moved to Los Angeles to craft the second full-length NIN album, assembling a studio in the house where actress Sharon Tate was murdered by Charles Manson's associates. The Downward Spiral was a highly ambitious work, a concept album indebted to progressive rock that featured the most detailed, layered studio craft of any NIN release yet. Hugely anticipated, the album debuted at number two and became one of the bleakest multi-platinum albums ever. Richard Patrick had departed the touring band to form Filter, and Reznor revamped the group with drummer Vrenna, keyboardist Woolley, guitarist Robin Finck, and bassist Danny Lohner. NIN caused a sensation at that summer's 25th-anniversary Woodstock concert, performing a ferocious set after horsing around and covering themselves in mud just before hitting the stage. Meanwhile, MTV had put an edited version of the video for "Closer" in heavy rotation and NIN scored one of the year's unlikeliest hits: a song whose chorus began "I want to f*ck you like an animal," which helped make Reznor one of alternative rock's biggest sex symbols. The subdued ballad "Hurt" gained some further airplay, even though it lacked the titillating shock value of "Closer." Later in the year, Reznor assembled the soundtrack of Oliver Stone's controversial Natural Born Killers, editing the songs together to create an innovative collage; he also guested on "Past the Mission," a track on Tori Amos' second album, Under the Pink. In 1995, with new keyboardist Charlie Clouser, Nine Inch Nails hit the road with David Bowie, whose late-'70s albums (along with Pink Floyd) had been a major influence on The Downward Spiral. He also contributed a cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls" to the soundtrack of The Crow and issued the remix album Further Down the Spiral, which nearly reached the Top 20 (a testament to his popularity).

Año de grabación : Metropolis, 2005.

Raymond Watts, who now performs under the name Pig, was one of the forming members of the performance art ensemble, Kein Mehrheit füer die Mitlied, which would later develop a more musical focus and become known as KMFDM. He left that band in its early stages and would later return to play on their Beat by Beat tour and help them record their seventh album, Nihil. As Pig, he released a number of albums, the first few on the WaxTrax! label, including the 1988 single, "Never for Fun," and his debut lp, A Poke in the Eye...With a Sharp Stick, which also came out in 1988. The early albums represented the influences that he was under while living in Germany and doing work for bands like Einstruzende Neubaten. He soon would form a relationship with the A&R guy at Alfa Entertainment, who released his albums The Swining and Red, Raw & Sore. When the A&R moved to Victor, Watts followed and issued several albums through them, including the 1995 full-length, Sinsation. The music featured on Watts albums has evolved over the years to become increasingly complex, incorporating German, British and Japanese pop music elements and a variety of electronic idioms. His albums often incorporate three or four styles within the context of each song, alternating with works that are much more straightforward and listenable. In 1999, Cleopatra records re-released the two Alfa albums, The Swining and Red, Raw & Sore, as a single volume, resurrecting one of the strongest periods in his career. No One Gets Out of Her Alive followed in 2000.

The punk prohibited the psychedelic rock, but " Furs" , fleeing from the limitations, they did not discard it. The result was a music that approached more to pop than to punk, a combination of guitars and sax, with an intense and balanced rythmical section, and the complement of a singular voice, sometimes warm and others heartbraking, of the leader of the band, singer and person in charge of the letters, Richard Butler. Love And Rockets

Género: Rock alternativo, Neo Psicodélia

Artistas similares: Sex Gang Children, New Order, Public Image Ltd.

The name of the band was taken from the comic magazine made by Jaime and Gilberto Hernandez.

In spite of the status that they had like gothic band, Love and Rockets changed of musical style, and demonstrated with its first smaller success ' Ball of Confusion' (a cover of Motown) that had future like band. His second production of 1986 ' Express' continued by the same road, unlike ' Earth, Sun and Moon' in 1987 where they gave a radical turn to have a - folk- sound.

In 1989 take out the market his homonymous disc that presents what AOR is denominated (Oriented Album Rock = tendency very near to the programmers of radio stations). The simple second of an old T. Rex album, ' So alive' became one of his more known songs .

A record for the genere, definitively a -Must Have-.

Artistas similares: Cranes, Lush, The smashing pumpkins

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - The firstborn is dead

Género: Alternative rock, Spoken word

Artistas similares: The the, PJ harvey, Peter murphy
