2010 Cport Stickers

I have procrastinated on publishing this post for a while.  Last Fall I had the pleasure of spending some time in Moscow and while I was there, this is the closest thing I found to trading cards.

These are stickers of players from the Russian Soccer League.  The CPORT in the title of this post is not a misprint.  In Russian the S sound is symbolized by the same character as our letter C.   The P is similar to our lower case n but I didn't carry the transliteration through the remainder of the word.

As I stated in my FC Bayern Munchen post last week, I don't really know anything about Soccer, Futbol or Stickers so this is strictly presented for purposes of folks that know more about those things then myself.

2011 Sport Stickers Wrapper

At the very top of the wrapper you see the word "Cnopt" preceding the capital H.  This is how Sport is spelled in Russian.  Plurals do not end in S so there is no such word as SPORTS in Russian.

The word that begins with the H is the Russian word for Label or Sticker.

Ok enough of the language lesson - onto the stickers:

Martin Kuschev (silver foil-y looking insert)
I will translate the names the best I can.  The Martin part is likely correct here - Kushev is probably correct - sounds Russian.

 Jan Golenda
 Oleg Evanov or Ivanov

Dmitri Kudrachov
Team Zenit half sticker

Zenit is the representative from St Petersburg.  I recognized them here by their uniforms.  Their sponser is the energy company Gazprom which is fairly common in Europe I believe.

The Website for these Panini Stickers is www.sportsticker.ru - However, it is a single page written entirely in Russian.

2011-12 FC Bayern Muchen Stickers

Happy Oktoberfest!

Actually, I think Oktoberfest has officially concluded, but that is only a technicality for this posting.  I got to take in my first Oktoberfest in Munich last week and while I was there I spotted these:

These are Panini stickers for Munich's local squad.  While we were at Oktoberfest, FC Bayern won a pair of games to move to 4-0 in their division which was the top division in whatever league they play in I think.

Unfortunately I know very little about futbol or soccer so this won't be very informative.  And the stickers are not any more informative.  The fronts don't tell you who the player is and the backs are basically identical.

I am not a sticker collector, so maybe this is common but the sticker below is half an image that needs to be matched to another sticker.

Another half photo sticker.  I checked this bottom doesn't match the top above.

There you have it, 5 Stickers of guys that I have no idea who they are - If I was more ambitious I would dig around for a checklist to see if I can figure out who any of these futballers are, but I am to lazy.

Stay tuned, time permitting I anticipate posting some other stickers over the next couple of days.

2002 Bowman Heritage Hobby

This is a pack of 2002 Bowman Heritage Hobby that I picked up at a card show in July. Each pack contains 10 cards and the packs went for $4.50. These cards honor the 1954 Bowman set and I believe this is the 2nd edition of Bowman Heritage - the 2001 Bowman Set was based off of 1948 Bowman.

The Set is 440 cards composed of 324 base cards and 116 short prints. Joe Mauer and David Wright are the key rookies from this set. There are a couple of levels of serially numbered chrome cards as well as Relics and Autos.

#273 Antwon Rollins
#381 Scotty Layfield
#66 Pedro Martinez

#205 Brad Nelson
#274 Bobby Jenks

#10 Adam Roller

#298 Cliff Floyd
#49 Dan Phillips
#365 Dean Palmer

#153 Miguel Tejada
Checklist 1 of 2

The Tejada cards is a Black Box Parallel - these are in every other pack. The other 1 per 2 are short prints.

To get a look an original 1954 Bowman check out this post at Phungo

B-Sides (click to enlarge)

#66 Pedro Martinez (b-side) 1954 Bowman Heritage #214 Ferris Fain (b-side)

I have also presented the B-Side of an original 1954 Bowman for comparison. The #66 Card in the original 54 Bowman Set was of Ted Williams, but the cards was pulled - probably a contractual thing. Jimmy Piersall replaced Williams in the Set. In 2002 Topps Recognized this by putting two current Red Sox on #66, Pedro and Nomar Garciaparra.

I like the look of 1954 Bowman and I am considering building the set after I have completed my 1959 Topps Set. 2002 Bowman Heritage would be an interesting companion set to build with the original.

2010 Topps NFL Football -Retail

This is a retail pack from a Big Store - begins w/ the letter "W". Twelve Card pack, $2.10 including PA Sales Tax.

2010 Topps NFL Football
#365 Larry Johnson
#47 Jacoby Jones
#74 Ernie Sims
#284 Shaun Phillips

A PSU alum, and and a new Eagle.

#231 Julius Jones
Gridiron Lineage #GL-ET John Elway & Tim Tebow
Topps Attax Julius Peppers
#286 Kellen Winslow (damaged)

I am sure many folks will find the Lineage card a bit sacrilege. I didn't notice that the pack had been tampered with but the Winslow card is ripped badly at the center bottom. Doesn't really show up on the scan.

#196 Brian Robiskie
#180 Reggie Wayne
#294 Everson Griffen (rc)
#194 Colt McCoy(rc)

A Viking Rookie Card and Colt McCoy RC. Some of the premier rookies from specify that there are 5 Rookie cards in the set and what number the card is in that set. The McCoy is card 1 of the 5 card Colt McCoy Rookie set.

If there are any Browns Fans out there, I suppose that this pack would make them happy.

1991 Topps "1953" Topps Archives

This almost 20 year old set was a near complete reproduction of the Classic 1953 Topps Set. The Cards are in the current 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch format rather than the slightly larger 2 5/8 x 3 3/4 inches of the originals. This pack was picked up as a bonus pack at a card show with several packs of Allen Ginter and Bowman Heritage. I think it was listed as $1.50 for a 12 card pack.

The Cards (clicking on any group shot will enlarge the scan)

1991 Topps Archives The Ultimate 1953 Set
#309 Leo Durocher
#55 Maurice McDermott
#86 Billy Martin
#33 Bob Kennedy

The Durocher card is not part of the original set and a Photo is used here rather than a painting.
Cards #281 and above of the 337 card set were not issued as part of the original 1953 set.

1991 Topps Archives The Ultimate 1953 Set
#156 Jim Rivera
#24 Ferris Fain
#189 Ray Jablonski
#27 Roy Campanella

1991 Topps Archives The Ultimate 1953 Set
#249 Ed O'Brien
#126 Bill Connelly
#209 Jim Greengrass
#318 Curt Simmons

As with Leo Durocher above, Curt Simmons is a new 1953 card. This was the only Phillies card in the pack, of course I already had it.

The Originals
1953 Topps #22 Howie Fox

The B-Sides

The Howie Fox card along with the B-Sides of Durocher and Campanella. The Durocher card was not part of the original 1953 Set and this is differentiated by having all of the Biographical text at the top in Black. The Originals had either all white text or a White Name followed by the demographic info in black (as it is on the Campanella card). On the Bottom of the Durocher back it is also specifies that the card is a member of "The Cards that Never Were".

It was a fun pack to open - Worth a buck-fiddy I suppose - Lots of star power: Campy, Billy Martin, Fain and Simmons are all good pulls.

1989 Sportflics

A few weeks back I posted a pack of 1988 Sportflics in this space. Today we are going to take a look at a younger sibling, 1989 Sportflics. The 88 pack break was pretty successful with 2 of the three cards in the pack containing Hall of Famers. Unfortunately the 1989 pack was not as good a vintage:

1989 Sportflics
#49 Tim Belcher

#19 Floyd Bannister

#38 Todd Worrell

mini bio Cards

Pretty blah group. Although Belcher and Worrell did both get to play in the World Series, Belcher actually earned a ring with the 1988 Dodgers. Each card feature a head shot and 2 in action photos. All three cards are of pitchers and the two action shots appear to be from the same pitch.

The mini bio cards are a step down from 1988 as they no longer feature a team insignia.

B-Sides

The Two Mini Cards feature Early Wynn and Gabby Hartnett. I think you can make these out if you click and enlarge them. Perhaps someone should hand the Early Wynn card to A-Rod.

It's a Wrap
Pretty similar to the 1988 Wrap, just red rather than Blue.

For the Collector
This pack came out of the 6 packs for $5 bin, and it was probably overpriced. The best cards were the Trivia cards and they don't even have a picture.

Check out Team Phungo for even more mid-summer drivel.

1988 Sportflics

This is a pack that I picked up in a 6 for $5 bin. As you are likely aware these are the cards that have "Triple-Action" photos - or 3 pictures that can be viewed by looking at the card from different angles.

#12 Ryne Sandberg

I am not sure what order the cards came out, but this Sandberg was the pick of the pack. The two additional photos show Ryno swinging the bat.

#221 Vince Coleman - Mark McGwire - Paul Molitor
#26 Tony Fernandez
#147 of 153 Trivia Card (San Francisco Logo)
#76 of 153 Trivia Card (Detroit Logo)

This is the rest of the pack. Molitor and McGwire are both captured swinging w/ the shot of Molitor being the best. I wonder how many people would have picked Molitor has the future HoF player on this card back in 1988.

Each pack comes with 2 trivia cards - hmm - each pack has almost as many inserts as there are base cards - sounds like Topps 2010 Jumbo. The trivia question above is on the back of the Tigers Card.

B-Sides

(click to enlarge - and you check out that stats for Sandberg's wonderous 6 ABs as a Phil)

Wrap

Sportflics is a fun somewhat gimmicky product. At 88 cents for a pack which includes A Hall of Famer plus a shared HOF card is a solid rip.

1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball

In Honor of the Phillies playing the Toronto Blue Jays, who hail from Canada - home of the O-Pee-Chee Brand - we are today presenting a pack of 1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Cards.

The '83 O-Pee-Chee set is basically an abbreviated version (396 cards) of the Topps set (792 cards) of the same year. The cards have identical fronts except for the logo is different. The text on each side of the card is written in both French and English.

The key players that we are looking for out of this pack are #83 Ryne Sandberg (rc) and #143 Tony Gwynn (rc). I do not believe Wade Boggs (Topps #498) is included in the 83 O-Pee-Chee set. The Sandberg and Gwynn cards are #83 and #482 respectively in the Topps Set.

The Wrapper
Yep that right back in 1983 this bad boy went for one Canadian Quarter. I picked this 10 card pack up for $3.99 off the bay. The 83 O-Pee-Chee pack are 10 cards, while the Topps packs from the same year offered 15 cards. Low recent auctions for 83 topps packs came in at $4.49.

The Wrapper (b-side)

There is an offer on the wrapper to get a Ball Strike Out counter for a buck and a quarter. What a bargain!! I wonder if there is an "app for that"

The Cards (click each to enlarge)

#368 Richie Zisk
#56 Reggie Jackson

#36 Super Veteran Rollie Fingers

#62 Jim Gott (A Blue Jay!!)
#57 Tim Blackwell (les Expos)
#340 Larry Gura

#250 Bill Buckner
#213 Tom Burgmeier

#112 Luis Pujols

#386 Rod Carew All-Star
#386 Rod Carew All-Star (b-side w/ Gum firmly attached)

No Sandberg or Gwynn, but a solid pack, Unfortunately one of the better cards has the gum pretty much permanently affixed to the back. As I said this is a pretty good pack 3 Hall of Famers including a super vet insert. Rod Carew was always a childhood favorite of mine, and it is really hard to argue with a Reggie card. Regardless it was a fun to open an 27 year old O-Pee-Chee pack for for $4 and the HOF talent was just a bonus.

Compare
1983 Topps #728 Ron Reed

for comparison sake I have featured Ron Reed's 1983 Topps card above, Gotta love the old powder blue road unis.
1983 O-Pee-Chee #56 Reggie Jackson (b-side)
1983 Topps #43 Bob Dernier
(b-side)

B-sides for comparison - note the Text in French on the Reggie card (click to enlarge).

1983 O-Pee-Chee #36 Super Veteran Rollie Fingers (b-side)
1983 Topps #491 Super Veteran Jim Palme
r (b-side)

And the B-sides of the Super Vets. That is a lot of info to cram on the Rollie card.

As noted above a fun pack to open - I'll be keeping the HOFs and probably the Buckner card. If you don't have an '83 O-Pee-Chee from your favorite team, and you see a care you need here, let me know - we can likely arrange something. My address is on my profile over at Phungo.
