Brandon Rossel, Mirabelle Lee & Piper Juhan Once Filmed a Nickelodeon Pilot Titled 'Sit and Stay Pet Café'

It was recently revealed that Nickelodeon once filmed a pilot for a potential new preschool series titled Sit and Stay Pet Café!

Instagram /@brandon_rossel

The pilot starred young actors Brandon Rossel (The Outsiders Club) and Mirabelle Lee (Veep), one half of the Lee twins, and Piper Juhan, who were aged 12, nine and nine, respectively when the episode was filmed.

The pilot also featured actor Scott Farley (Hamlet... A Puppet Epic!) as the voice of principal character Slick.

Co-created and co-produced by Heather Tilert, Sit and Stay Pet Café was set to be a narrative live-action preschool series featuring kids and live animals. The pilot episode was 22-minutes long and produced by Nickelodeon, Sinking Ship Entertainment / J.J. Johnson. The pilot was filmed in Canada, including in the Chedoke-Cootes (Ward 1) area of the City of Hamilton between Sep 07, 2016 - Sep 13, 2016.

Prior to serving as the co-creator and co-producer of Sit and Stay Pet Café, Tilert served as Manager, Digital Content Development; Director, Digital Content Development; Senior Director, Digital Content Development; and Executive In Charge of Production at Nickelodeon.

For the pilot, Courtney Goldman (Dino Dana, Odd Squad, Annedroids, The Next Step) served as editor, Brian Rocafort (Odd Squad) served as First Assistant Camera Operator, and Joan Hug-Valeriote served as the on-set tutor for the child actors.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Nickelodeon greenlit Sit & Stay Pet Café to series, with the trademark for the show expiring due to "abandonment" in February 2018.

Since filming the pilot, Brandon, Mirabelle, Piper and Scott have gone on to film other projects. Brandon will be starring in Disney Channel's upcoming comedy Fast Layne, Piper was featured in an episode of Good Behavior in 2017, Scott featured in the television series The Handmaid's Tale, and Mirabelle starred alongside her twin sister, Anais in a season one episode of Nickelodeon's Lip Sync Battle Shorties! In the episode, the duo performed “I Love It” by Icona Pop.

In fact, Mirabelle and Anais Lee are no strangers to Nickelodeon viewers. They've also appeared in commercials for Nick Jr.'s Shimmer and Shine, and have also voiced characters in Nick Jr.'s Bubble Guppies!

Talking about filming the pilot of Sit and Stay Pet Café, Anais revealed that Mirabelle made her #1 best friend when filming a Nickelodeon pilot, and that they've been best friends ever since!

Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., 'The Loud House', 'Hunter Street', 'Top Wing', 'I Am Frankie' & 'LSB: Shorties' Receive Honors in Spring 2019 Edition of Parents' Choice Awards

Nickelodeon has won a raft of prestigious awards in Television category of the Spring 2019 edition of the Parents' Choice Awards!

Presented by the non-profit Parents' Choice Foundation, the Parents' Choice Awards recognize the very best products and media for children of different ages and backgrounds, and of varied skill and interest levels.

Below is a list of awards (along with reviews, where available) that Nickelodeon has been awarded in TV category of the Spring 2019 edition of the Parents' Choice Awards. A full list of winners can be found at parents-choice.org. Congratulations Nickelodeon!

Nick Jr. Super Sonic Science: Tree
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice Recommended Seal

Those clever kids at Nick Jr are at it again. Here, they've mixed Claymation with hip-hop and layered 2D animated show mascots (Top Wing, Blaze, Shimmer and Shine, Paw Patrol and Team Umi Zoomi) into a science music video that demonstrates how a seed becomes a tree. Caution: lyrics can be contagious.

Hunter Street
Ages: 6 - 11 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice Recommended Seal

Consider Hunter Street a kind of mystery series wrapped in light-hearted family humor. Teenager Max is the new kid in a foster family with four other children, and one morning they awake to an alarming development: Foster parents Erik and Kate are nowhere to be found.

Encoded maps, secret rooms, ancient artifacts, a menacing bad guy … The kids must work together to track down and interpret clues in hopes of revealing what happened. That's complicated by the challenge of keeping up appearances so folks in the outside world believe everything is fine in the Hunter household. And just when it seems like they've cracked the case, a package arrives at their home and another mystery begins.

Set in Amsterdam, Hunter Street was co-developed with Nickelodeon Netherlands television, and produced in the Netherlands. Its adventurous tone and above-average production value make the series approachable for audiences everywhere. The foster siblings figure out how to work together, forging familial bonds as they sleuth around town. Their escapades include a fair number of physical gags and lighthearted jokes but those don't detract from the air of mystery. Young viewers who like a "whodunit" are likely to enjoy the overarching storyline in each season of the series, along with the subplots baked into each episode. As amusing and diverting television viewing goes, parents can feel good about letting kids indulge in this feel-good guilty pleasure.

Top Wing 1
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice Approved Seals

It's a common genre in television today: Anthropomorphized animals model cooperation and problem-solving skills. In the computer-animated series Top Wing, a rescue team of avian heroes "earn their wings" at Top Wing Academy, and each episode features two separate stories of their adventures.

Top Wing cadets have his or her own signature vehicle and, with the help of their mentor Speedy, they learn rescue skills and life lessons on the job. The birds range from blue jay Swift to penguin Penny, with a cast of puffins, chicks, and even a rooster thrown in for feathery good measure. Their island includes an array of other animals, too. Be on the lookout for unexpected guest appearances providing voice talent, including Liz Phair and Alanis Morissette!

In "Turtle Train Rescue," Swift is so eager to help the conductor of a stranded train that he rushes into the rescue instead of following orders. He doesn't earn a badge for the mission but he does realize the importance of following directions. In "Shirley's Sleepover Adventure," squirrel Shirley spends time with Top Wing cadets but her zeal gets in the way. At a crucial moment, though, she proves paying attention is the best way to build skills.

The formula has been seen before, from Octonauts to Paw Patrol. With vehicles, it's expressed as Thomas the Tank Engine and any of the films or spin-offs in Pixar's Cars franchise. Still, if your child is a fan of adventure and likes birds,

Top Wing is a cheerful choice.

Nick Jr Let's Count
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice FunStuff

Nick Jr Block Party: BFF Song
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice FunStuff

I Am Frankie
Ages: 6 - 11 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice FunStuff

Whether you have braces or glasses or just feel like you don't click with any of the cliques at school, being a teen can be tough. Now imagine trying to navigate teen life when you're an android hoping to blend into the human world. That's the challenge faced by Frankie Gaines in Nickelodeon's live-action series.

Ever since Frankie was smuggled out of a military weapons facility, she's spent her time fitting in at school and eluding the people devising her capture and return. Here, serial drama mixes with lighter episodic plotlines, focused on family, relationships, and finding your place in the world; Frankie as android is a recognizable analogy for teens who feel adrift in the melee of school's social hierarchy. Actress Alex Hook does an admirable job as Frankie, conveying the confusion and surprise one would expect from an android who wasn't programmed to deal with the emotions and sometimes questionable motives of humans.

The target audience for this program is ages 6 - 11; plots are simplistic, the intrigue is easy to follow; special effects are enjoyable and judiciously used, and the "villains" are more silly than sinister. It strikes just the right tone to resonate with young viewers, who are eager to move on to that legendary next level of teen-hood, while still being young enough to appreciate the sci-fantasy twists complicating Frankie's life.

The Loud House
Ages: 6 - 11 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice FunStuff

Life is tough for Lincoln Loud, an 11-yr-old coping with the usual tween tribulations. To make it more complicated, he's the brother of ten sisters. That results in a lot of chaos, but the family obviously abounds with loyalty and love, too, a refreshing change from other programs that rely on mean-spirited sibling spats for plot fodder.

Lincoln's problems are pretty basic: Family game night is spoiled by a sister who's a bad sport; little sis Lily gets attached to a musical toy that drives the rest of the siblings crazy; and the Loud kids try to get their dad to appreciate new technology after he puts a ban on their beloved electronic devices. At school, Lincoln lacks confidence on a woodworking assignment; and he and his sister take pity on science-class frogs destined for dissection. Lincoln's best buddy Clyde joins him in tackling these challenges, and by the end of each storyline, Lincoln's sisters help him glean positive messages about resolving conflicts and making good choices.

This series is noisy, frenetic, and peppered with mild gross-out humor. A few peripheral characters are uncomfortably stereotyped. And some parents may feel their homes are raucous enough without inviting Lincoln Loud and his crowd in via the television screen. Still, the series includes a nice nod towards respecting differences and diversity, and Lincoln's family interactions are based on the desire to resolve squabbles, not exact revenge. Consider it harmless, albeit loud, escapist entertainment.

Nick Jr Block Party: Golden Cube and BFF Song
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice FunStuff

Lip Sync Battle Shorties
Ages: 6 - 11 yrs.
Award: Parents' Choice FunStuff

This reality series premiered in 2016 but its latest iteration includes Nick Cannon as the host of a faux-concert competition featuring elementary-aged kids and tweens engaged in high-energy lip-sync battles.

Lip Sync Battle Shorties is let-your-hair-down feel-good family fun — a tuneful, colorful, and high-spirited break that will have kids and parents alike [lip] singing along. Contestants perform songs from their favorite artists so expect lots of Bieber, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, and the like. YouTube personality JoJo Siwa chimes in as Cannon's sidekick and celebrity guests join the judging panel. The stage sports plenty of eye-popping backdrops, costumes, props, pyrotechnics, and back-up dancers to support the illusion of a true concert performance.

You gotta hand it to these contestants. They display impressive stage presence without seeming overly-precocious or age-inappropriate. They "sing," bop, and interact with the crowd and judges during their songs, and pull off dynamic choreography, providing genuinely entertaining performances.

Lip Sync Battle Shorties is an enjoyable way to hit the pause button on everyday stresses. Parents, just make sure to clear out floor-space in the family room; there's a 100% chance your kiddos will want to join in the dance and song.

Additionally, Peppa Pig Magazine, based on the hit Peppa Pig animated preschool series that airs on Nickelodeon channels globally, has been given the Parents' Choice Recommended Seal of approval in the Spring 2019 Magazines edition of the Parents' Choice Awards!:

Based on popular episodes of the beloved TV series Peppa Pig, the eponymous magazine's content is meant to be shared and guided by an adult.

The colorful and seasonally themed issues have activities for learning and play: story-based lessons with positive messages, a pullout double-sided poster, and theme related crafts and games. No matter that readers are already well acquainted with four year-old Peppa – each issue introduces Peppa, her family and her friends, often sharing a theme related characteristic (Daddy Pig falls asleep in the sun, Grandpa Pig is an avid gardener who gets annoyed with the birds).

The stories can be read again and again, but unless your child uses pencil and a v-e-r-y good eraser, the coloring pages and game activities are a one time only. The few clearly marked advertisements are for other Topix Media publications, and there's a page inviting "readers" to join and follow Peppa's social media presence and newsletter. Nevertheless, at $9.99, the special interest screen to print publication is a delightful playful learning treat.

Hailee Faith Squires from Brookwood, Alabama to Perform on 'Lip Sync Battle Shorties'

Tuscaloosa, Alabama - Not every 11-year-old can say they have traveled the country to do what they love. Hailee Faith Squires of Brookwood can.

She’s been singing since the age of 2 and she says she has learned the spotlight is where she shines the brightest.

“I hope that I can reach out across the world and just sing to people,” Squires the The Tuscaloosa News.

While Squires, a sixth-grader at American Christian Academy, and has demonstrated her singing talents through performances around Tuscaloosa for years, she's about to become known nationwide for her lip-synching skills.

In August 2018, Squires traveled to Burbank, California, to film an episode of Lip Sync Battle Shorties for Nickelodeon. She was one of 20 kids to chosen nationwide, and her episode will air at 7:00 P.M. (ET/PT) on Friday, February 1, 2019.

The show, hosted by rapper and television personality Nick Cannon and YouTube sensation JoJo Siwa, is a children’s lip sync battle show where kids go head-to-head by lip-syncing their favorite songs in honor of artists they admire. The series is based on Paramount Network's Lip Sync Battle.

In Hailee's episode, titled "Hip Hop Ballroom, Fun Fishing Lake, New York Central Park Egg Hunt", Shorties will lip sync to songs by Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull, Maddie & Tae, and Bruno Mars in performances that will take viewers to a ballroom competition, a fishing lake with big surprises, and a colorful egg hunt in New York City.

“It was an amazing experience,” Squires said. “I was a little bit nervous to first go out there, but once I was out there, I met so many new amazing people. I absolutely loved it.”

After rehearsing her skit for three days, she finally got to see her set in the filming studio.

“I was blown away,” Squires said. “It was more than I could have ever dreamed of. I got to pitch them my idea for how I thought my dance skit should be, and they literally just made it come true. It was beyond awesome.”

Even though she's not even a teenager yet, Squires already has a number of musical accomplishments under her belt. It all began when she was 2 years old. She sang publicly for the first time when she went to hear her cousin, who she calls her Aunt Mary, perform and hasn’t stopped since.

“As soon as she got through with her song, my mom told Aunt Mary that I wanted to sing, and my first song was 'Jesus Loves Me,'" Squires said.

As she grew, so did her passion for music, and Squires began taking vocal lessons at age 7.

She made her television debut in 2015 when she appeared on Nashville Spotlight, a cable television show for kids based in Nashville, Tennessee. For 18 months, she traveled there every month to film, and this helped develop both her singing and performance skills.

Her cousins, Mary Katelyn Price and McCay Medders, were members of the Alabama Music Association, sparking Squires' interest in the association. Squires auditioned, tagged along with her cousins to the association's national competition in Tennessee, and won the 7-12 age division for the contemporary gospel category. From there, she represented the AMA as Youth Ambassador from 2016 to 2018, allowing her to attend events and promote the association.

In 2016, she traveled back to Pigeon Forge and won the North American Country Music Association Vocalist & Entertainer of the Year award in the traditional gospel category.

The next year, she traveled to the competition for a third time where she won the North American Country Music Association Vocalist & Entertainer of the Year award in traditional country, 7-12 division. Since then, she has won Kip Tyner’s Tuscaloosa Talent Search 2016 in the junior vocalist category, won the 2018 American Christian Academy Elementary Talent Show, and has spent the rest of her free time practicing and performing.

One of these notable performances was when she opened for Glen Templeton in June 2018 at The town of Brookwood's Summer Celebration. Also, over the Christmas holidays, she opened for Casey Thrasher at the Bama Theatre for the Angels Among Us show, which benefited the Sprayberry Education Center.

For the University of Alabama athletics, Squires has sung the national anthem for baseball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball and gymnastics. Still on her list are tennis and football.

This spring, Squires will release her second CD, featuring the song “Bluejeans,” written for her by Jimmie Hyche and Jack Denton.

This year, she is also planning to perform at the Wounded Warrior Project auction and dinner in Saint Stephens on Feb. 2 and is going to continue her work for Tuscaloosa’s Eagles’ Wings charity as well as continue performing at other events.

“I was born to sing, I just hear music in my head and someday I hope I’m as famous as Carrie Underwood or Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn or even Vestal Goodman,” Squires said. “That would be awesome.”

Even with all the performances she’s done, her favorite location is still one of her firsts in Tannehill Opry in McCalla, Alabama.

Hailee Faith Squires - Lip Sync Battle Shorties Submission 2 from Rhonda Squires on Vimeo.

Squires has a strong social media presence and hopes it continues to grow as she develops as an artist. Her official pages can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

In addition to her videos of her performances, she has an official music video of her original song “Angel On My Shoulder” on YouTube, written by Hyche and Denton and produced by Lance Holloway.

Little Q-C dancer has big dreams: 'I like making people happy when I dance'

CARBON CLIFF — Tatum Roselle and his parents have crisscrossed the country the past year and a half — but they haven’t been on vacations. Instead, the 12-year-old Colona Middle School student has been working hard to make his dancing dreams come true.

Tatum has been dancing since he was 5, mainly in hip-hop style. He will show off his skills nationwide Friday, Nov. 9, when he will appear as a contestant on Nickelodeon’s “Lip Sync Battle Shorties,” airing on TV at 6 p.m. He performed recently at a Quad-Cities Lip Sync Battle Shorties event at Rock Island’s Establishment Theatre.

“Tatum is a versatile performer with a huge personality,” said Julie Medeiros, the dance department director for Go 2 Talent Agency, based in Burbank, Calif., which represents the 12-year-old. “When you watch him perform, you can’t take your eyes off of him.”

Tatum’s performance won him the Agency Award at a “Monsters of Hip-Hop” convention in April 2017 in Orlando, Fla., which earned him a meeting with the L.A.-area agency that summer, Medeiros noted.

“We had a conversation with Tatum and his family, and from there, mutually decided he would be a great fit for our GTA family,” she said.

“Tatum put together a video submission for the show, and they loved what they saw,” she said by email. “You need to be strong enough to capture a live audience, and he has what it takes.”

Tatum’s appearance on Nickelodeon’s “Lip Sync Battle Shorties” was filmed over four days in July at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. He is one of three contestants ages 10 to 12 performing with backup dancers in the episode.

Tatum lip-synced to JoJo Siwa’s “High Top Shoes.” Siwa, who appeared on the “Dance Moms” show, is a 15-year-old native of Omaha, Neb.

“I love shoes,” Tatum said last week at his grandma’s house, noting he loves to wear Jordan high-tops. For the show, he couldn’t wear Jordans or any shoes with logos, but he sported a silver pair that lit up on the bottom.

He didn’t win his episode of the show, but is having a viewing party at his house Friday.

Tatum said his favorite part of the experience was performing and getting to be on TV. He said he wasn’t nervous. “I like making people happy when I dance, showing my personality, getting noticed by other people in the industry,” he said.

‘ALWAYS LOVED TO DANCE’

Tatum has taken weekly dance classes with the Davenport-based hip-hop studio RE-FL3X, run by Juan Valtierra of East Moline, since he was 5.

“He always just loved to dance,” Tatum’s mom, Jayne Roselle, said. “Like when he was 2 and 3, we’d go places, and he’d always just dance.”

“He’s been a loyal student of ours. There are some who stand out, and he stood out because of his outgoing personality,” Valtierra said. “Tatum is very energetic; he makes people smile.”

For several years, Tatum has performed with RE-FL3X as part of the Pete the Purple Bull anti-bullying program at area churches, schools and community events

That’s important to him, he said, because “I don’t like bullies.”

Tatum heard about the national “ImmaBeast” hip-hop dance company on Instagram, where he follows a lot of dance people. His own account (@taterose32) — where he posts photos and videos — has 2,010 followers.

He first auditioned in Chicago in June 2017 for ImmaBeast to get a scholarship to go to L.A. that July. Tatum was among about 100 who tried out in Chicago, and five were picked.

“He was lucky; they only gave two full scholarships to travel to L.A., and the rest were adults,” his mom said. “He was the only kid to get a full scholarship.”

“I’m going around totally overwhelmed, and he’s like, ‘I’m fine. What are you nervous for?’ He’s always cool and collected,” she said.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it because there were a lot of older people that had a lot more experience than me,” Tatum said. “I gave it my best, and that’s all you can do.”

He was in Los Angeles for two weeks in a row, since he had won a scholarship for “Monsters of Hip Hop.”

“He keeps us busy,” his mom said. “This year alone, we’ve been to California three times, New York, Dallas, Kansas City.”

One agency they met with in L.A. asked him to move there immediately.

“We said, ‘He’s 11; we’re not at a point we’re going to move,’ ” his mom said. “The other one he actually signed with said they’d work with us while he’s here, and that’s how he got with Nickelodeon, through the agent.”

“A lot of those kids he auditioned with, they live out there and audition,” Tatum’s dad, Darren, said. “They’re home-schooled. They dance seven days a week. He only dances one or two days a week; still plays football, plays baseball. I want him to be a kid, too.”

Tatum plays quarterback for his school team, and he said participating in sports helps his dancing, especially his hand-eye coordination and muscle control.

Tatum said he’d like to be an actor when he grows up. “That has a little more personality, and personality is pretty much how I carry my dance off. I’d like to dance professionally,” he said.

He’s been in a couple of local TV commercials, which were booked through the Rock Island-based SK Models and filmed in 2016-17. One of those gigs earned him $300, which he used to buy Christmas presents for his family.

Friends have said they’re glad he hasn’t changed with his newfound stardom.

“He’s very down to earth, outgoing, very compassionate,” his mom said.

He hopes the Nickelodeon show leads to more opportunities, more auditions, and more fame.

During the whirlwind of his performances, Tatum also got to dance before two Chicago Bulls games at the United Center in 2017 and this year with Essence W. Dance, based in Davenport.

“It was fun,” Tatum said. “You got to be on the floor Michael Jordan was on,” his dad added with pride.

¡y resucitan a Frankenstein!
