I now turn to the objection that one master can
live more attention to one pupil. In the first place
there is nothing to prevent the principle of “one

teacher, one boy” being combined with school
education. And even if such a combination should
prove impossible, I should still prefer the broad
daylight of a respectable school to the solitude and
obscurity of a private education. For all the best
teachers pride themselves on having a large number
of pupils and think themselves worthy of a bigger
audience.
