Explanation.

--The parties who were convicted on yesterday, before Judge Meredith, were arraigned on the charge of attempting to escape from the guard, while they were at work outside of the penitentiary, in which they were confined as convicts. This offence, by a special act of the Legislature, is made felony, and it was for felony that they were convicted.
