Crime and Comics Crossover

Some artists we can track via twitter or foursquare or via facebook updates. Matthew Clark not so much. You will have to see this show to find out what is going on - follow the chalk lines and smell of donuts to The Virtuoso Studios.

Hidden Portland: The Museums

The ink is still wet so you will want to be at the First Thursday Opening at Reading Frenzy and get one of the Limited Edition handmade books by Carye Bye. Hidden Portland: The Museums, is Carye Bye’s first self-published book. This is her premier publication but she is also known by many as “The Local Museum Lady” for her amazing map of Hidden Portland – an online museum guide as well as her famous bike rides that she organizes for different groups in Portland. The 100+ page guide book/artist book contains mostly museums in Portland. She highlights mostly free and funky places and pairs them with special illustrations. Reading Frenzy’s 1st Thursday Art Show will feature the postcard-sized original illustrations & will be available for purchase.

I actually was able to be with the artist at a few places in the book! She opened my eyes to some news things at Portland Art Museum, Dan & Louie's Oyster Bar and Voodoo Doughnut. Yes, those last two are in the book and you have to buy it to find out why! That's the hidden-part of this book. Discover Carye Bye as she has already made quite the impression on Portland with her great work on Red Bat Press.

you have another chance at p:ear

I am not sure how you may have missed Ryan Birkland's art if you are you around PDX. If this is your first time hearing about him you must check him out at p:ear in the next couple weeks. You really should come out to First Thursday and see his great works. Great as is in some huge work as well as the "healthy energy" and "newlife" he gives to old windows and glass. I have only peaked at this show a bit though the window of P:EAR's new space. I look forward to the work he too may have done with the youth.

Senior Students Works, Show and Sale!

I wanted to be sure you knew that a special show will be going on at Everett Station Lobby this First Thursday. (NW 6th and Everett Lobby, Everett Side) Special new works from Anna Velouria (Martinez) and Sarah Cosman. It is their senior show of art and I am told is quite an assortment of different kinds!

It is great to know that you are investing in an artist that wants to go farther with their work. I feel by supporting them but buying their work. Also this is great way to invest and perhaps buy a piece by the next award winning or best selling artist or well you fill in the blank and go!
Get there between 6.30pm-9.30pm! TheBuzzbyBrian

Meet Derek and see his art This Thursday !

Derek Olsen is a painter, silk screener and tattoo artist currently working at Black Hole Tattoo & Body Piercing in Portland. He often paints as an attempt to better understand the things that inspire him...be it a flock of birds, Japanese wood block prints, old tattoo flash or a brass band marching down the street. Derek has a desire to comprehend what it is, how it makes him feel, and why it moves him. This show is a series of work ranging from small to large, with a set of free-standing privacy screens as a utilitarian way to make large scale artwork more accessible. Please enjoy his attempts at understanding. myspace.com/d2r23

Artist Reception Party May 7th 7-10pm

Live Music: Celilo
Celilo fuses the dark and dreamy indie city skylines with a drawling rural charm into moody Americana rock. The lead singer, Sloan, has beaten down vocals that travel on world-worn wisdom through barrooms, bedrooms, and back roads. Celilo summons up the driving pop of early Wilco and conjures the bleak beauty of Townes Van Zandt. celiloband.com

Benefit: 15% of all event proceeds go to Mercy Corps

Beer: Widmer Brothers Brewery

Bonus: 20% off all regular price merchandise from 7-10pm. (not to be combined with other offers)

See Double Tonight

This should be a First Thursday to remember. I was very excited to get this invite...
"April 2nd, Art Opening 6 PM till 10 PM Richard Schemmerer & Claudia Porter at Everett Station Lofts. Please join us for a fun artistic evening at First Thursday, THE VIRTUOSO STUDIOS 323 NW 6th Avenue, Portland Oregon 97209. I believe the last time I saw Schemmerer's work was last year at the QCenter in it's old location. He is quite the talented and busy artist. Read more about the show. Mr. Schemmerer does a great job of interviewing and documenting the Portland art scene. I am intersted to see how these two artists and creative individuals work together in the future.
PS- Richard has a window installation at PDX Contemporary Art-

RYZ Launch Party for Caldera

Lizard Lounge sent me this hot invite via Twitter - First Thursday April 2nd from 7-10pm
The official Portland launch of RYZ Wear ! "Founded by a group of ex-industry sneaker geeks who believed in a better way, RYZ isn’t just another fashion brand. It’s a new way of thinking about the fashion business that includes getting input --and ultimately forming a partnership -- with their customers. Unlike the fashionista elite who dictate style from on high, RYZ invites anyone to design the perfect pair of shoes. They’ll produce the most popular designs, sell them around the world, and share the profits with the designer. Everybody wins.
Music & Entertainment by DJ Verbz Beer: Widmer Brothers Brewery Benefit: 15% of event sales go to Caldera ! I love calderaarts.org Bonus: Save 10% on regular price items from 7-10pm. (Not to be combined with other offers) I am not sure if I should wear "My Cops Hate Me" shoes or the "Caveman" design...you will have to be there and find out!

Chambers is so @916 in the Pearl now

Above image: James Pustorino, "All Things conceived shall realize liberation," acrylic and pencil on denril, 54" x 110", courtesy of the artist. Amazing idea to show James for more than just one month- April 2 - May 30, 3009: Chambers@916 presents "Cosmic Strips," works in acrylic and pencil on denril by James Pustorino. The large scale works will be rotated periodically throughout the two month exhibition(fun idea).
The "Cosmic Strips" are a cosmology in 20 parts that presents Pustorino's perception of the universe in a multi-layered, visual narrative influenced by orchestral fantasias, comics and science texts. Using abstract painting, observational rendering, and graphic forms, each panoramic panel is like a super-sized comic strip that presents a story full of symbols and abstract language.
Opening reception: April 2, 2009 6-9pm.
Artist reception: May 7, 2009 6-9pm.
Gallery hours: 11am-5:30pm, Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment.
I am so glad that Chambers is doing well in their "smart" new location- visit them ...I hope they have cute Champers again...

Bring your dog to try them out!

Some worry about where they can get a good glass of wine on First Thursday as they check out the art- I get concerned about my puppy. This Thursday I will stop by DWR Portland Studio and check out these very nice stainless steel food and water bowls ! "Good Design Meets Perfect Function. Each is lovingly made by hand, using top-of-the-line maple plywood, comprised of a
sustainably-harvested core. They are made with clear or colorful, eco-friendly finishes, with water-resistant top-coats, inside and out. They are gorgeous with distinctive, exposed-core tops and fun, bright, modern colors. " @ the DWR Portland Studio.
