TERRORTOISE PAINTED

Finished off the 2nd batch of Terrortoise at last, they had been at base coated stage for about 2 years I think...

I doubt there will be anymore of these guys for a while but I do have another 6 shells and heads cast, so one day when the inspiration hits me.....

Terrortoise Update

These 6 guys have been on my desk a LOOOONG time now the last update on them was in December!!

Finally got them ready for undercoating, which meant finishing off their arms and weapons basically.

More shots below the random waffing text below.

I have a bunch more shells push molded so there will be more some time in the future, but right now I just want to get these guys painted to finish the 10 I have made.

I'm getting to that point again where I need to finish something in order to keep from falling into a state of not wanting to do anything at all.

At the moment there is one more dwarf that needs painting sitting on my Desk to finish the dwarf warband....he's also been there since last year....

I also have the last NPC (Gustav on the painting desk, again been there since, well early this year at least).

And of course the two new Champions to round out the Southlander warband....

Those 4 models get priority after I finish Ash the Zombie lord, then I'm back in the air but with the Dwarves and Southlanders added to the Sisters of Sigmar (the only warband done so far...).

Before anyone says it, no I will not be adding Bandanas

The locals are not amused at the reminder of their recent loss at the hands of the Hare's running teams at the recent annual sporting event.

Hordes: Blindwater pact (Minions) Ironback Spitters (paint in progress)

Teedle deep and Tweedle derp about half way through the paint work so far, one coat of P3 heartfire orange (which has pretty poor coverage BTW, even over a brown undercoat, but it brightened up the model enough), one coat of army painter lava orange, one red ink wash, GW scorched brown, P3 Jack Bone (excellent coverage) and lastly Army painter Quickshade: Strong tone.

I need to go back over the guy's scales again as the covereage of the scorched brown was kind of .... well not great lol (painting in with poor light does that), so I need to make sure no orange is showing through, then some highlights, some varnish and i'll start on the back plates.

Hordes: Blindwater pact (Minions) Ironback Spitters

A Couple more minor conversions for my Hordes army.
Both these spitters had the horn on their chin removed and filed down to a neat angle.
One of them has been posed looking to his left (picture below) the other to be much more up-right, which involved removing some of the metal from inside his torso, and one of his back spikes.
Both then had greenstuff applied to cover up some of the blank area that was mean to be covered by their torsos and then some in the neck area (the one below has quite a lot as you can see, in order to get the "looking left" pose I wanted.
Both these guys will be straight on the painting desk and will be getting a similar colour scheme to the terrortoise so as they could be used in the same warband should ever I manage to finish my Modheim rules or play something else :).

Cheers for looking

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (WIP)

Here we have some images of the model I'm touting as the unit leader for the terrortoise.
The conversion uses all the same basic parts as the rest of the terrortoise I have converted in previous posts.
This time however I decided to "buff him up" a bit with a slightly larger top shell, use different legs to the easy ones and to make the arms a little more dynamic. The head is also slightly more upright that most of them.

The pointing hand was converted out of the swearing hand you get in the Berserker boxed set which required some fiddly work to get the finger to look OK.

He will eventually have a 2 handed mace in his right hand and some bits and pieces to make the model more interesting applied to him... when I find some bits that will suit.

Cheers for reading.

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (WIP)

Just a quick group shot of the guys i'm working on at the moment. Obviously there is loads of work still to do to them.

Cheers for looking

MODheim: Terrortoise Group shot

So a little late, but as pomised the group shot for the terrortoise. I did actually convert up another vampire over the weekend but the lighting was rubbish and compiled with the new camera's batteries dying I haven't taken a photo yet! Again, I appologise for the out of focus shots.

More terrortoise in the works (yes I do intend to convert some of the heads, i'm not after an army of clones (though paint variations helps a lot),

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (PIP) last one (for a while)

And here he is, the last one from this batch, the "Bonehead" (one of the heroes)

The reason I put the ridges on his head is the push cast of this one didn't come out so well compared to the others, he actually had a recess in his head, so I set about filling it and partway through decided the ridges in the putty looked cool... so I made more them :).

I ended up using the wrong orange on this guy, so he's actually had a wash of P3 red ink which has given him a far darker skin tone compared to the rest, but I think it works well on him and come off prery cool. I also toned down the markings on this one, he still has the spots on the shoulder, neck and legs that the rest of them have, just not as many. Again the eyes still need finishing.

Well that brings me up to four terrortoise, I have the parts ready for another 4 more, but I really must tone down the sunburn on my Dwarves first.... assuming I don't get carried away with another race i'm working on lol.

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (PIP) again....

Another one for you (again eyes yet to be done), just one more to go from this batch! This one will have a shield at some point....

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (PIP)

Got some painting done this weekend (one both the house and a terrortoise), so here is one almost finished guy for you, I still need to finish the eyes, and i've noticed a bright orange patch in the middle of his head that needs fixing!!

I'm quite enjoying painting the dots on these guys (though i'm hating the quality of the orange paints I presently posses), the other two are getting there, I will probably have photos of them before the end of the week.

Details about the conversions are all in this blog, just use the "labels" section under terrortoise.

I have also push molded the shell and head for another 3 terrortoise so I can finish the warband off soon. Still need to come up with ranged weapon ideas (not so enamoured with the idea of them just having slings).

Sci-Fi terrortoise anyone + new fishmen miniatures on the horizon.

Well I was going to get around to doing a sci-fi terrortoise conversion and in the back of my mind I was thinking about scratch sculpting and casting them but it looks like Mantic games may have done the groundwork for me.

Assuming they make another $13,000 in the next 6 hours at the time of writing on their "dreadball" kickstarter this lovely concept will be put into play:

I have ti admit i'm slightly annoyed that the idea I had is now no longer original but this is cool enough to get over that. I have already invested in the Dreadball kickstarter and this is definitely going to be one of my BOGOF teams.

While i'm posting concepts from companies I also found out about this one the other day:

His name is Rask, and he is going to be the Blindwater caster appearing in the next Privateer press Hordes release (2013), seen here pictured with undead Bog Trogs.... These models WILL BE MINE!!! they will be added to my fishmen warband, only problem is, at PPs prices they will probably set me back about £40, I wish PP would go plastic :( (for cost and ease of conversion.

Anyway, I have actually finished a Terrortoise paint job so will have a photos up today or tomorrow.

Have a good rest of Sunday

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (PIP)

I have a busy weekend this week, so i'm doubting that I will get anything else up this week, so I though i'd put up a shot of the current progress on my Terrortoise guys.

As you can see I have now given them arms and undercoated them. The guy on the far left will be getting a shield once he's painted.

My undead army have arrived from Mantic games now so I have a lot of undead to put together so I don't know when I will get to painting these guys.... I guess it depends on how bored of putting together undead I get.

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (WIP)

A Quick update on the Terrortoise warband, I needed something other than undead to work on and these guys were closest on the workbench LOL. I've made their necks a little longer than the original prototype as I think it gives them a slightly more aggressive look.

The guy on the far left will have a weapon across his shoulder / shell and the one in the middle with have a shield and club of some description. I'm probably going to stick with clubs for the entire warband, and slings for missile weapons as I can't think of anything else they could use easily.

Same parts used in the conversions as the prototype.
(Avatars of war dwarf berserker bodies, legs arms (and eventually hands)).
The shells and heads on these three were push molded from the 2nd prototype (which i'm yet to finish as i'm not sure how long the mold will last).

Angry Terrortoises, Leo, Raph and Michel...... :P

MODheim: Terrortoise Update (PIP)

An update showing my prototype paint scheme.... I've gone a bit off the wall for this one, I wanted to paint the terrortoise NOTHING like TMNT for a start. I came across a Box turtle and a Painted Wood turtle on line and thought that thier colouring looked really interesting.

For some reason my brain thought "I want to give that a go".... oh well it's done with now... I'm not overly un-happy with the paint work. I desperately need to get some more oranges if i'm going to use this scheme for all of them though as my oranges have really bad coverage and a sort of "filmy" like painting quality that leaves streaky bits....

Conversion parts are:
Avatars of war dwarf body, legs arms and great weapon / standard arm.
Right hand (his) from OOP dwarf 6th edition plastics (not a perfect fit but best I could find) with weapon carved off.
Weapon top from OOP Beastmen herd set
Shell was sculpted (see other blog entries on Terrortoise).

However saying all the above, the figure below was almost entirely push molded out of pro-create (apart from arms, and weapon) with a little bit of greenstuff sculpting / repair work. I don't feel guilty about it as you only get enough arms to finish the exact number of bodies and legs in the AoW set so it's not like i'm getting a free complete model out of it.
I push molded the figure as you only get 5 versions of each leg in the set and I really didn't want to sculpt another shell... lol.
I have successfully push molded just the shell for another 2 terrortoise as well well so I now have 5 figures, 2 have no arms, 2 have no limbs or heads...

As an aside If anyone has a AoW set and wants more of the legs with the bare legs and NOT loin cloths (dwarf head type decoration) over the groin area, I'd happily swap for the trousered ones and the legs below.

Anyway onto the photos:

After paint

Pre-paint
Rules wise; i'm thinking fixed armour level on rear facing (e.g. un-modified armour to attacks originating in the models rear facing), and level 2 armour all around (equivalent to heavy armour in modheim).

I haven't yet figured out what warband these guys will be in, but they are likely to be the / one of the elite options for the warband, (as it means I won't have to convert that many of them... lol).
Not sure what the rest of the warband will consist of. If I can get more of these legs though I may just do the whole warband out of them, we'll see (as I only had 5 heads cast).

MODheim: Terrortoise (WIP)

Something new today, and not stolen from anyone else either (as far as i'm aware) lol.

The photos below show my work in progress Terrortoise figures (name suggestions welcome).

These conversions are based on the Avatars of War Dwarf Berserker plastics (again - see Gnomes), with a head I sculpted and cast some years ago (which i'm going to have to resculpt bits of). and a fair amount of GS.

If anyone is curious about the colour of the sculpting putty, I am running out of greenstuff so i've been mixing in some pro-create (light green putty) and I thought i'd try some brownstuff to see if it helped at all (dark green putty), there is also a bit of pure pro-create putty on one of them.

Have a good weekend :).
