K is for Kilravock
Kilravock is a castle near Inverness, Scotland, which is owned by the Clan Rose, from which my dad's family descends, through my grammy's maternal line.
"The lands of Kilravock have been in the Rose family for 25 generations (acquired by marriage in the 13th century). This castle was started with a tower in 1450 which was later expanded in the 17th century. The castle is also an active bed and breakfast. It is open for tours on Wednesdays in the summer. The castle was erected in 1460 by Kilravock VII under charter by John, Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross, and has been continuously inhabited since that date. It is the only Scottish castle of that era to have this distinction."
Cool, huh? We're still working on finding the direct line from a Mr. Edward Rose in our line (from Baltimore in the 1770s) to the castle Roses. It's tricky business. But, nevertheless, we claim it as our ancestral home in Scotland. My mom took Stephanie and me there in 1997.
I took the picture below from one of the ramparts.
(I think. I didn't notate this album well. Mom? Help? Castle identification?)
Here is the Rose Clan Crest:
And you can see the tartans here.
Hooray for Scotland!
I got most of my info from the Clan Rose Society of America website and from the Kilravock Castle webpage. Also good info here.

I am so impressed at your ancestral knowledge! It gives me encouragement to know mine better. I know we are totally Scottish too though, and that's about all I know.
hooray for kilravock! and yes that picture was taken from the ramparts. they are the only castle in the highlands crazy enough to let americans up onto the scary, dangerous ramparts. it was fun! i remember having "tea" there with you and stephanie. mom
Wow!
So, how do I find out if we are distantly related??? I think I descend from that clan, too.
Cool! Not to mention Kilravock at Sundance an:))
seriously so cool - you should get a tartan skirt made - there's a place in Edinburgh that has most tartans and will custom make you a skirt or kilt - how totally cool is that?! The guys that work there sport kilts and some of them look as though they were cast as extras in BRAVEHEART. Just think - wearing one would be the so cool - WEARABLE family history!!
lindsey, are you serious? cuz if you are, you can have your DNA tested. well, you would have to be a male from the Rose line (this is all sounding kind of DaVinci Code-esque). The DNA testing company conducting the research is here in Houston. I'm planning on having my dad get tested when he's here next. K, Dad? :)
Les these pictures are great. Always wish we had gone there. Do you remember the kilt that I gave you a long time ago that was the Rose plaid. It was a red plaid. I think you were the one any way I did have a kilt and some faabric in the dard green plaid. They are a pretty plaid in both colors. I am sure we could order yardage and have fun with it.
Love you
Grammy
Yes, I'm totally serious! My maiden name is Rose. I don't know much about the history of that side of my family, not much genealogy has been done. But, the story goes that our family came from Scotland. So, just maybe we are distantly related!
i also say hooray for Scotland! it's fun finding the MacKinnon tartan and crest and learning all about their clan. when i am old and have less to do, i will do more ancestral research. great castle!
