Shopping in Pagoda Street of Singapore Chinatown

At Pagoda Street, you find the entrance of the street market and Chinatown Heritage Centre. The gate is not a classic Chinese monument with dragons but a red commercial gate indicating that the Singapore Chinatown has become wireless and provides free Wi-Fi. Modern way of living make their way into the traditional districts.

On the market most people carry an umbrella and every shop sells them at a variable prices. There seems to be a direct relation between the price of the umbrella and the volume of rain dropping from the sky. Simple wooden market stands in combinations with the modern skyscrapers make this world a bit surreal.

Seeking to buy a souvenir, don't hesitate, Pagoda Street has a lot on offer: waving cats welcoming visitors, jewelry boxes, fluffy dragons for kids, drawings, T-shirts, lucky charms, painted bottles for perfume, puppets and a lot more. When you don't intend to buy something the street in still interesting because of its nice facades and decorations.

Aan Pagoda Street vind je de ingang van de straatmarkt en het Chinees Erfgoed district. De toegangspoort is geen klassiek monument met draken maar een rood reclame vierkant. Het geeft aan dat het Singapore Chinatown nu draadloos netwerk en gratis Wi-Fi aanbiedt. De moderne maatschappij sijpelt door in de traditionele Chinese wijken.

Op de markt lopen veel mensen met een paraplu in de hand, iedere winkel verkoopt deze tegen variabele prijzen. Er lijkt wel een directe relatie te zijn tussen de prijs van de paraplu en de hoeveelheid regen er uit de hemel valt. Eenvoudige houten marktkraampjes in combinatie met de moderne wolkenkrabbers maakt het bijna een fantasiewereld maar het bestaat echt. 

Als je een souvenir zoekt, twijfel dan niet meer, Pagoda Street heeft een groot aanbod: wuivende katten die iedereen welkom heten, juweeldoosjes, pluchen draken voor kinderen, tekeningen, T-shirts, geluksbrengers, beschilderde glazen flesjes voor parfum, poppen en nog veel meer. Als je niets wil kopen is het nog steeds leuk hier eens rond te kijken, de gevels van gebouwen zijn prachtig afgewerkt en gedecoreerd.

Looking for a typical London souvenir, Cool Britannia

The Cool Britannia store at Piccadilly Circus in London is the flagship of this British souvenir chain. Needless to say that everything is spectacular starting with the man at the entrance. In his cool UK outfit he greets people passing by and volunteers to pose with you for pictures. Kristel and her mother Greta grabbed him by the arm. Poor fellow.

Inside everything looks, feels and breaths British. You find here flags, the Big Ben tower, chocolate boxes, Mr. Bean's car, telephone booths, English clothing, and a lot more. Above all, a store to browse around, have fun and buy a souvenir.

De Cool Britannia winkel aan Piccadilly Circus te London is het vlaggenschip van de Britse souvenirketen. Overbodig te zeggen dat alles spectaculair is ingericht en dat begint al bij de man aan de ingang. In zijn Coole UK outfit groet hij de voorbijgangers en biedt hen aan te poseren voor foto's. Kristel en haar moeder Greta nemen hem langs twee zijden vast. Arme man. 

Binnen ziet, voelt en ademt alles Brits. Ze hebben er vlaggen, een Big Ben torentje, Britse chocolade verpakkingen, de auto van Mr. Bean, rode telefoon cabines, Engelse kledij en nog veel meer. Boven alles, dit is een winkel om rond te neuzen, plezier te hebben en een souvenir te kopen.

Strategic location for the Aguas Calientes souvenir market

The location of the local souvenir market of Aguas Calientes could not be better. It is directly in front of the train station and you have to pass through it when you arrive in or leave the town. Every tourist is obliged to walk on the market at least two times during his stay in town.

The pictures below give an impression of what you can buy here: masks, plates, clothing, silver jewelry, handbags, chess boards and pieces, carpets, hats and a lot more. We each bought a T-shirt from Machu Picchu and two hiking jackets with many pockets. Like most places in Peru, you also see street dogs on the market.

De plaats van deze lokale markt in Aguas Calientes kon niet beter zijn. Recht voor het trein station en iedereen die in de stad aankomt of vertrekt dient door de markt te wandelen. Er is geen andere mogelijkheid. Men komt er dus op zijn minst twee keer per bezoek. 

De foto’s hieronder geven u een indruk van de koopwaar: maskers, borden, kledij, zilveren juwelen, tassen, schaakborden en stukken, tapijten, hoeden en nog veel meer. We kochten beiden een T-shirt van Machu Picchu en twee avonturenvesten met heel veel pockets. Net als overal in Peru liepen er hier ook veel straathonden.

Santa Teresa Market in Cusco

On the little square in front of the Santa Teresa church you find a daily market. Locals are selling all kinds of homemade products to tourists. We think this is a good place to buy a souvenir, it is not expensive. Before someone asks, yes, I bought a hat.

One of the most interesting items we saw were leader diaries. They looked great and we are sure this is a unique product for in your home country. Most of these markets look similar and offer drawings, paintings, clothing, hats, gloves, jewelry, bags, puppets and other souvenirs. It however fun to look around on such local market and we will share more of these articles with you when we continue reporting of our travels in South America.

Op het kleine pleintje voor de Sint Teresa kerk wordt er dagelijks een markt georganiseerd. De lokale bevolking verkoopt er thuis gemaakte producten aan toeristen. We denken dat dit een geschikte plaats is voor het aankopen van een souvenir of geschenk, het is er niet duur. Voor het iemand vraagt, ja ik heb er iets gekocht, een hoed. 

Eén van de mooiste producten waren lederen dagboeken. Ze zagen er uitstekend uit en dit is absoluut een uniek geschenk voor vrienden en familie. De meeste van die markten lijken gelijkaardig en bieden tekeningen, schilderwerken, kledij, hoeden, handschoenen, juwelen, zakken, poppen en andere souvenirs aan. Het is echter leuk hier rond te wandelen en we zullen nog meer van deze Zuid-Amerikaanse markt artikelen met jullie delen.

Barcelona, a true shopping paradise for the whole family

We were in Barcelona on a weekend when F.C. Barcelona was playing home. The city was full of soccer fans and in particular fathers with their sons, ready to go to the match. Before you enter the stadium you need have a scarf, t-shirt or gadget from the club. No worries, these souvenirs are for sale all over the city. Messi must be the most photographed person of Spain. For less football related items, the “I love Barcelona” shop is a good alternative.

Barcelona is a shopping paradise, which is clear. On our pictures we try to give some impressions of special shops selling shoes (a women’s all time favourite shopping article), cloths, condoms?, Tibetan products, sweets, flowers, food, toys, cooking pots, ceramics,…

There must be something seriously wrong with you when you can’t find anything you like in a city like Barcelona. Think of it and they have it.

We waren in de stad gedurende een weekend dat F.C. Barcelona thuis speelde. Overal zag je voetballiefhebbers rondlopen en in het bijzonder vaders met hun zonen, klaar om naar de match te gaan. Vooraleer het stadium te betreden wil je toch een sjaal, T-shirt of gadget van de club dragen. Maak je geen zorgen, deze kan je overal kopen. Messi is waarschijnlijk de meest gefotografeerde persoon van Spanje. Voor niet voetbal gerelateerde gadgets is de “I love Barcelona” winkel een goed alternatief.

Barcelona is een winkelparadijs, dat is duidelijk. Onze foto’s geven u een indruk van enkele bijzondere winkels die volgende producten verkopen: schoenen (het favoriete artikel voor vrouwen), kledij, condooms?, Tibetaanse producten, snoep, bloemen, eten, speelgoed, kookpotten, keramiek,... 

Er moet werkelijk iets met je mis zijn als je in Barcelona niets kan vinden naar je smaak. Je kan het zo gek niet bedenken of men heeft het.
