Paradise beach in Cabo San Lucas

It was very hot in Cabo San Lucas, 32 degrees and this is supposed to be the coldest month of the year. The cruise ship had to drop anchor in the bay and passengers were brought to land via tender service. This is all very quick and professional. The beaches are incredible, wide sand strokes and the sea was great to swim in. Water sports like jet skiing, parasailing, snorkelling and diving were available. The water however was colder than expected. In the harbour you find many nice restaurants and terraces to have a drink. There is a dolphinarium that has a meet and swim with dolphins program. When the Celebrity Infinity sailed of we saw a large group of wild dolphins in the bay. It was a nice day.

Het was een hete dag in Cabo San Lucas, 32 graden en dit wordt verondersteld de koudste maand van het jaar te zijn. Het cruise schip moest anker werpen in de baai en passagiers gingen aan land via een overzetdienst. Dit ging allemaal zeer snel en professioneel. De stranden zijn ongelooflijk, brede zandstroken en de zee is uitstekend om in te zwemmen. Overal zijn watersporten zoals snorkelen, waterskiën, parasailling en duiken beschikbaar. Het zeewater was echter kouder dan verwacht. In de haven vind je veel restaurantjes en gezellige terrassen om iets te drinken. Er is een dolfinarium waar je met dolfijnen kan zwemmen. Toen de Celebrity Infinity de baai verliet hebben we nog een groep wilde dolfijnen in de oceaan gezien. Het was een zeer leuke dag.

Shopping, culture and fun in Acapulco

After a snack on the cruise ship, we went into the city. Many people tried to offer us a taxi but we felt like walking. The taxis are special here. Most of them are original Volkswagen Beetles. Acapulco had the last factory that built them, it closed down in 2004. In Acapulco, tourists were continuously haressed to buy product from sales men in the street. This is forbidden now, street sellers have their own areas with improvised shops like you see on one of the photos. Next to these low value items you also have the high end shopping centres. Acapulco is a large city of more than 600.000 inhabitants. You see that the city comes to live in the evening: many restaurants, bars and discos are available. From a cultural aspect, we saw a Maya show and we were surprised to see many dolls with faces of death. We asked a local why these dolls were for sale in so many shops. She explained it was a Mexican tradition and that these dolls represented deceased family members. People place them in their living room to honour their family. Again something new we learned.

Na het eten van een snack op het schip gingen we de stad in. Veel mensen probeerden ons een taxi aan te smeren maar we maakten liever een wandeling. De taxi's zijn wel speciaal hier. De meeste zijn Volkswagen Kevers. In 2004, werd hier de laatste kever fabriek gesloten. In Acapulco werden toeristen voortdurend lastig gevallen door straatventers. Dit is nu verboden, verkopen op straat is niet meer toegestaan. Hiervoor zijn toegewezen gebieden met geïmproviseerde winkeltjes opgericht. Naast deze goedkope producten vind je ook winkels van hoge kwaliteit. Dit is een grote stad met meer als 600.000 inwoners. Je ziet dat de stad 's avond tot leven komt met zijn vele restaurants, bars en disco's. We hadden geluk een Maya show te zien. In de winkels staan veel poppen te koop met doodskoppen. We vroegen een inwoonster waarom dit zo was. Ze vertelde dat het een Mexicaanse traditie is voor overleden familie. Men plaatst deze poppen in de woonkamer om hun dode familieleden te eren. We hebben weer iets bijgeleerd..

Culture and fun on the beaches of Acapulco

The beaches of Acapulco are just fantastic, you can walk here for hours, lie in the sun, have a beer on one of the many beach bars, or do some sports. Walking from our cruise ship to the beach areas, was about a ten minutes walk. First we saw the local fischers trying to sell their morning catch. Fresher than this is impossible. At most areas, the white sandy strokes go steeply down towards the water line which sometimes creates spectacular waves. If you like swimming you have to be careful but it is fun. We were sailing at 5pm so we could not enjoy a party in one of the open air disco bars on the beach. Acapulco is known for its wild parties.

De stranden van Acapulco zijn fantastisch, je kan er uren wandelen, zonnebaden, genieten van een biertje in een strandbar of gewoon sporten. Een wandeling van het cruise schip naar de stranden nam ongeveer 10 minuten in beslag. Bij het eerste strand stonden vele vissers hun verse dagvangst te verkopen. Verser dan dit kan niet. Op de meeste plaatsen, vindt je mooie brede zandstranden die zeer steil naar de waterlijn afdalen. Dit veroorzaakt spectaculaire golven die op het strand breken, het is leuk maar men moet toch oppassen bij het zwemmen. Ons schip vertrok om 17:00 uur dus hadden we niet de mogelijkheid een open lucht stranddisco op te zoeken. Acapulco staat bekent om zijn wilde strandfeestjes.

Professional cliff divers in Acapulco

Acapulco is famous for its Cliff divers. We were thinking that people were just diving from cliffs at any time during the day but this was not the case. The divers are professionals and have their own union. The group performs several shows a day. The youngest diver is 13 years old. They swim through a narrow water entry and climb up against the cliff, barefoot in their swimming trousers. It is already dangerous climbing to the top. Before jumping it is praying time. Some of them dive from an altitude of more the 30 meters and from that position they don't even see the water surface. They are well trained and injuries are rare. When someone dies it is a tourist who also tries to dive from the cliff. In each show about 15 divers jump once, they limit their number of dives to avoid blindness. They hit the water at high speeds and this leads to problems with their eyes. It was an impressive show.

Acapulco is het meest beroemd om zijn "Cliff Divers" (rots schoonsspringers). Wij dachten dat veel mensen gedurende de dag van de rotsen doken, maar dit was niet het geval. De duikers zijn professioneel gegroepeerd en hebben een eigen vakbond. De groep treedt verschillende keren per dag op. De jongste duiker is maar 13 jaar oud. Ze zwemmen door een smalle inham, langs de rotsen en klimmen daarna op hun blote voeten de steile klif naar boven. Dit is reeds gevaarlijk. Voor het springen is het tijd voor een gebed. Sommige duikers duiken van een hoogte van meer als 30 meter, uit een positie van waar ze het wateroppervlak niet kunnen zien. Ze zijn goed getraind en ongevallen zijn uitzonderlijk. Als er iemand sterft is het een toerist die ook eens wil tonen dat hij durft te duiken. In iedere show zijn er ongeveer 15 duikers die elk 1 keer springen, ze beperken het duiken daar dit op lange termijn naar blindheid leidt. Door het water telkens te raken op hoge snelheid beschadigen ze hun ogen. Het was een indrukwekkende show.

La Crucecita Catholic Church of Huatulco

This is a very small church and the only one we have visited in Mexico until now. We were surprised that it was so clean and the paintings looked brand new. The church is only 10 years old and this explains a lot. The town claims to have the largest ceiling painting in the world of the Virgin Maria. Here in Mexico called the Virgin of Guadalupe. It was a hot day, the flowers in the front of the church gave a special feeling.

Deze kleine kerk is de enige die we hebben bezocht in Mexico. We waren verrast dat alles zo proper was en de schilderwerken leken net nieuw. De kerk is slechts 10 jaar oud en dat verklaart veel. Men heeft hier het grootste plafondschilderij ter wereld van de Heilige Maagd Maria. Hier in Mexico ook de "Virgin of Guadalupe" genoemd. Het was een hete dag, en de bloemen in de voorgrond van de kerk zorgen een aangename sfeer.

Close to heaven in Huatulco, Mexico

Close to heaven you can read on this welcome board at the beach of Huatulco. We have to admit it is a picturesque town with palm trees, flowers and colourful houses. However there is also a lot of poverty in the local community. The daily minimum salary is 5 dollar. It is like time stood still, manual labour in the textile industry and people working in the street without support of machines. We started our Mexican encounter with a taste of Mezcal. This is a Mexican alcoholic drink from the Maguey plant, a type of cactus. You drink it like Tequila, first pure lemon, than Mezcal and than lemon again. Some of the bottles have a worm or scorpion inside. I am sure that if you drink enough of Mezcal that you will come close to heaven for a while. It was a warm day and after visiting town, we went for a boat trip along the coastline line.

Dicht bij de hemel, lees je op het welkomstpaneel aan het strand van Huatulco. We moeten toegeven dat het een gezellig stadje is met palmbomen, bloemen en kleurvolle huizen. Aan de andere kant is er ook zeer veel armoede bij de lokale bevolking. Het minimum loon is 5 dollar per dag. Het is alsof de tijd heeft stil gestaan, men werkt nog steeds met handbestuurde weefgetouwen in de textiel en mensen werken op straat zonder machinale ondersteuning. We zijn onze Mexicaanse kennismaking begonnen met een proeverij van Mezcal. Dit is Mexicaanse alcoholische drank gemaakt van de Aloë plant, een soort cactus. Je drinkt het als Tequila, eerst pure citroen, dan de Mezcal, en daarna terug de citroen. Sommige van de flessen hebben een worm of schorpioen in de drank. Ik ben er zeker van als je hier genoeg van drinkt dat je inderdaad dicht bij de hemel komt. Het was een warme dag en na ons stadsbezoek hebben we nog een boottochtje gemaakt langs de rotsachtige kust.

New tourist development in Huatulco, Mexico

Huatulco is a small beach town in full tourist development located in the Province of Oaxaca. They are building apartments, hotels and are planning a new shopping centre. It will however take a few years before this is realised. When arriving from the Pacific Ocean, you see a coastline of rock formations. The sea seems very rough when it hits the cliffs. There are also some excellent places to snorkel. The Celebrity Infinity arrived together with the Holland America Rotterdam. When you walk between the two cruise ships you feel very small.

Huatulco is een klein kuststadje in Oaxaca die zich richt op toeristische ontwikkeling. Ze bouwen er appartementen, hotels en maken plannen voor een nieuw winkelcentrum. Het zal echter een paar jaar duren voor dit gerealiseerd is. Als je Huatulco binnenvaart langs de Stille Oceaan, zie je een ketting van rotsformatie langs de kustlijn. De zee ziet er zeer ruw uit als de golven breken op de klippen. Er zijn ook een paar uitstekende plaatsen voor het snorkelen. De Celebrity Infinity kwam samen aan met de Holland America Rotterdam. Als je tussen deze cruise schepen wandelt voel je toch wel heel klein.
