WDSF Senior I Standard in the historical City Hall of Wuppertal

We just love to dance at this location in Germany. The “DanceComp” Wuppertal is attacking couples from all over the world and is one of the most prestigious dance competitions. We participated in the Senior I Standard and were at the start with 92 couples from about 20 different nations. The level was extremely high and we finished on place 55. We were pleased with our dance quality and happy to share a video on our blog.

We houden er van op deze locatie in Duitsland te dansen. De “DanceComp” Wuppertal trekt deelnemers aan van overal ter wereld en is één van de meest prestigieuze wedstrijden. De Senioren I Standaard begon met 92 paren uit bijna 20 verschillende landen. Het niveau lag heel hoog en wij eindigden op plaats 55. Tevreden met onze danskwaliteit delen we een video van de wedstrijd op onze blog.

Public transport like an inverted rollercoaster, Wuppertal

The Schwebenahn is a unique public transport system similar to an inverted coaster. When we saw this we had to think of super thrill rides like Montu in Bush Gardens and Raptor in Cedar Point. Unfortunately this hanging tram is slow and old. It is of great historical value and was put into operations in 1901.

Most of our pictures were taken at the Central Station which seems to attract many homeless and poor people. The economic situation in Wuppertal looks down, something you would not expect for a German city. The country is generally known as the engine which pulls Europe out of the financial crisis.

De Schwebebahn is een uniek openbaar vervoermiddel en lijkt wat op een hangende achtbaan. Onmiddellijk dachten we aan top attracties zoals Montu in Bush Gardens en Raptor in Cedar Point. Spijtig genoeg is deze hangende tram traag en oud. De Schwebebahn werd voor het eerst in gebruik genomen in 1901 en is van grote geschiedkundige waarde. 

De meeste foto's werden genomen aan het Centraal Station waar veel arme en dakloze mensen rondhangen. De economische situatie in Wuppertal lijkt wel in een zware depressie, iets wat je niet zou verwachten in een Duitse stad. Het land staat algemeen bekend als de motor die Europa uit de financiële crisis trekt.

A brown Neptunus fountain on the Neumarkt, Wuppertal

The Neumarkt is the connection point for several shopping streets. An amazing building with two clock towers, a fabulous entrance and several statues dominates one side of the square. It is the only building of significance on the Neumarkt and the current City Hall. The statues however refer more to a court of justice.

Neptunus is standing high on its fountain overlooking the market. Below him you see the sea horses and other creatures. Sea men and women drink large volumes of source water. It must be the source of eternal life because all people look so fit and muscular.

De Neumarkt is het verbindingspunt tussen verschillende winkelstraten. Een prachtig gebouw met kloktoren, mooie poort en enkele standbeelden, domineert een volledige kant van het plein. Het is echter het enige architecturaal belangrijk gebouw op de Neumarkt en is tevens het huidige stadhuis. De standbeelden refereren echter meer naar een gerechtshof. 

Neptunus staat hoog boven op zijn fontein neer te kijken op de markt. Onder hem staan zeepaarden en andere wezens. Zeemannen en vrouwen drinken grote hoeveelheden bronwater. Dit moet wel de bron van het eeuwige leven zijn daar iedereen er zo fit en gespierd uit ziet.

Good and cozy Thai restaurant Sawasdee in Wuppertal

On the second floor of a industrial building in the Freidrich-Ebert Strasse you find restaurant Sawasdee, a cozy Thai establishment. The restaurant is divided in two areas, one with Thai tables sitting on the ground and one with normal German tables. We decided to sit on normal chairs which is more comfortable.

The decoration in the restaurant was typical Thai with small temples, Buddha statues, pictures of the Royal family, pictures of monks and even a fountain. A friendly Thai girl served our table.

As starter, we shared a mixed plate of tasters. For our main course we both selected a chicken dish with rice and noodles. A dessert with lychees would have been nice but we were already full. Maybe the next time.

Op het tweede verdiep van een leegstaand winkelgebouw in de Friedrich-Ebert Strasse vind je restaurant Sawasdee, een gezellige Thaise zaak. Het restaurant is in twee delen opgesplitst, één met Thaise tafels waar je op de grond zit en een deel met gewoon Duits meubilair. We besloten op westerse stoelen of bankjes te gaan zitten, het is toch wat gemakkelijker.

De decoraties van het restaurant waren typisch Thais met kleine tempels, Boeddha beeldjes, foto's van de koning, foto's van monniken en zelfs een fontein. Een vriendelijk Thais meisje bediende onze tafel. 

Als voorgerecht deelden we een mix schotel. Ons hoofdgerecht bestond beide uit kip maar op verschillende wijze klaargemaakt. Hierbij kregen we rijst en noedels. Als dessert had ik graag nog wat lychees genomen maar we zaten reeds vol. Misschien de volgende keer.

Our biggest ballroom competition ever, DanceComp Wuppertal

On Sunday, we danced our biggest competition ever. In the Senior I Standard there were 134 participating couples from 13 different countries. Most of the couples were from Germany, which is a very strong dance country, but some also had to travel from far like Russia and the USA. The event took place in the historical Town Hall of Wuppertal, a fabulous place which feels like out of fairytale. No wonder that this competition is so popular. We added some pictures of the dance hall and the Latin competition.

We were pleased with our dance performance, probably the best competitions we ever danced in a World Ranking event. We left 45 couples behind us which was just a few markings short to qualify for the second round. However we were pleased we could dance here and stood up to a big field. It was also the first time we had to dance with 16 couples on the floor at the same time. A challenge to keep quality when you have to avoid collisions with other couples. It is a learning process and we enjoy it.

Op zondag hebben we onze grootste competitie ooit gedanst. Er waren 134 koppels van 13 verschillende landen ingeschreven in de WDSF Senior I Standaard te Wuppertal. De meeste paren kwamen uit Duitsland, een heel sterk dansland, maar sommigen moesten toch ver reizen zoals de Russen en de Amerikanen. De wedstrijd vond plaatst in het historische stadhuis van Wuppertal, een ongelooflijk balzaal die uit een sprookje lijkt te komen. Het is dan ook niet te verwonderen dat deze wedstrijd zo populair is. We hebben enkele foto’s van het gebouw en de Latin competitie toegevoegd. 

We waren tevreden met onze danskwaliteit, waarschijnlijk de beste wereldranking wedstrijd dat we ooit hebben gedanst. In het eindresultaat lieten we 45 paren achter ons en kwamen enkele crossen tekort voor kwalificatie naar de tweede ronde. We waren echter heel tevreden dat we stand konden houden in zo’n sterk veld. Het was tevens de eerste keer dat we samen met 16 paren tegelijkertijd in één reeks dansten. Een hele uitdaging je kwaliteit en beweging te behouden zonder te botsen. Het was een goed leerproces en we hebben genoten.

Staying close to the competition, Arcadia Hotel Wuppertal

This weekend we were in Wuppertal for one of the most prestigious dance competitions in the world. It is held in the historical Town Hall of Wuppertal and the Arcadia Hotel is located right next to it. When we made reservations months ago, there were no regular rooms available anymore so we had to book a suite. They called it a suite but in fact it was just a bedroom with a small living room on the top floor of the hotel. The views of the city were nice and we had high ceilings.

Overall it is a nice hotel with a bar and restaurant. The buffet breakfast has lots to offer and room service is efficient. The biggest advantage is that we have a large bathroom to prepare for the dance competition, get into our dance gear and just walk to the Grand Ballroom across the road. We enjoy dancing in such a fantastic venue and this hotel makes it easy.

Dit weekend waren we in Wuppertal voor één van de meest prestigieuze danswedstrijden ter wereld. Deze wordt gehouden in de historische hal van het Oude Stadhuis van Wuppertal en het Arcadia Hotel ligt er vlak naast. Toen we maanden geleden onze reservatie maakten, waren er geen normale kamers meer ter beschikking dus namen we een suite. Ze noemen het een suite maar het is in feite een kamer met een kleine woonkamer op de bovenste etage van het hotel. Het zicht over de stad was prachtig en we hadden hoge plafonds. 

In het algemeen is dit een goed hotel met bar en restaurant. Het ontbijt buffet geeft veel te bieden en de room service is uitstekend. Het grootste voordeel was een grote badkamer om ons klaar te maken voor de competitie. We stapten in onze danskledij en moesten slecht naar de overzijde van de straat wandelen. We genieten er van aan zo'n evenementen deel te nemen en een hotel als dit maakt het allemaal wat gemakkelijker.
