Day at the Port of Ponta Delgada during a transatlantic crossing

The crossing from Miami to the Azores in Portugal was great. Calm seas and sunny weather, it was however not as warm as the more southern crossing route via the Canarias. Our ship the Celebrity Equinox is docked against a sky of grey clouds. It almost rained the full morning but we still decided to visit the island.

Alongside the port you see many historical buildings. Above the houses there is a lot of smog. This is not from the pollution but low hanging clouds. There is an outdoor Olympic pool, even though it is cold, people are swimming. Some houses and walls are very colorful, sprayed with graffiti.

De trans-Atlantische overtocht van Miami naar de Azoren in Portugal was uitstekend. Kalme zee en zonnig weer, het was echter niet zo warm als op de meer zuidelijke crossing route via de Canarische Eilanden. Ons schip, de Celebrity Equinox is aangemeerd tegen een hemel van grijze wolken. Het regende bijna een volledige voormiddag maar we besloten toch het eiland te bezoeken. 

Langs de havenlijn zie je vele historische gebouwen. Boven de huizen hangt er heel wat mist, dit is niet vanwege vervuiling maar de laag hangende regenwolken. In de haven is een Olympisch zwembad, niet tegenstaande dat het zeer koud is, zijn er toch enkele zwemmers. Sommige huisjes zijn heel kleurvol door graffiti.

Port of Alicante and the Santisima Trinidad warship

It is early morning and we start taking pictures of the port. We see the occasional high rise building, the sailings boats and the so typical mountains all over the Spanish coast. Walking from our ship to the beach promenade took about 20 minutes. High above us we see Castle Santa Barbara.

In front of the white historical building which houses the Belgian Consulate, stands a statue in the water protecting the small sailboats and yachts behind it. However more important is the 18th century constructed war ship, the Santisima Trinidad. We particularly like the statue on the bow and the decorations at the end of the ship. On the side you still see a few of the 140 canons the ship was armed with.

Het is vroeg in de ochtend als we beginnen foto’s te nemen van de haven. We zien enkele zeldzame hoogbouw, zeilboten en de typisch Spaanse bergen die je overal aan de kustlijn vindt. De wandeling van het cruise schip naar de haven neemt ongeveer 20 minuten in beslag. Hoog boven ons zien we het Santa Barbara kasteel. 

Voor het mooie witte gebouw, waarin het Belgische Consulaat gevestigd is, staat een standbeeld in het water. Het beschermd de zeilboten en jachten die er achter liggen. Meer belangrijker is echter het 18 eeuwse oorlogsschip, de Santisima Trinidad. In het bijzonder vonden we het beeld op de boeg en de versieringen op het achtersteven het mooist. Op de zijkant zie je af en toe nog een kanon uit een vuurkracht van 140 waarmee het schip bewapend was.

General Impressions of Port Zante and the city, St. Kitts

The entrance of the port is marked with a yellow gate. Behind this, you find all the souvenir shops and bars. The shops advertise duty free sales but be aware you cannot always bring alcohol on board of your cruise ship. We found this port particularly interesting to buy T-shirts and sandals. People are friendly.

There is always entertainment in Port Zante. Many locals walk around with little monkeys and will not hesitate to put them on your shoulders or head. In case you are not interested, keep your distance to be sure. In the main shopping street, dancers are given a show. We love our picture of the smiling and dancing girl.

The city is well worth exploring. There are some historical buildings, a square with English clock fountain, a park and the cathedral. All in close walking distance from the port. We recommend you however to be careful of pickpockets in the city. Most tourists stay in the port shopping area but that's a pity.

De ingang van de haven wordt gekenmerkt door een gele poort. Hierachter vind je alle winkeltjes en bars. Men adverteert belastingvrij winkelen maar houd er rekening mee dat je niet altijd alcohol kan meenemen op je cruiseschip. Deze haven was heel interessant om T-Shirts en sandalen te kopen. Mensen zijn vriendelijk.

Er is altijd iets te doen in Port Zante. Veel lokale mannen lopen rond met kleine aapjes en zullen niet aarzelen deze op jouw schouders of hoofd te plaatsen. Als je hier niet aan mee wil doen, houd dan afstand van deze individuen. In de hoofdwinkelstraat geven dansers een show. Wij houden van onze foto met het lachende dansende meisje. 

De stad is een ontdekking waard. Je vindt er historische huizen, een plein met Engelse klokfontein, een park en kathedraal. Allen op korte wandelafstand van de haven. We raden je wel aan op te letten voor gauwdieven. De meeste toeristen zijn argwanend en blijven in de haven, dit is spijtig.

Watching departing Cruise ships from the South Pointe Park Pier, Miami Beach

It is early afternoon and we are walking in the Miami port area which is full of super yachts. In the background we see the skyscrapers of Miami Downtown. The super yachts are for rent. In the window of a broker we see prices between 400.000$ and 750.000$ a week. Who can afford this?

It is time to go to South Pointe Park Pier, a fantastic place to walk and watch departing cruise ships. We advise you to look at the port schedule before to go, most ships leave around 5PM. The first big ship is the Celebrity Reflection, one of our favorites on which we booked a new cruise next year. The second ship is the Norwegian Escape, a bigger ship for freestyle young cruising. The last cruise ships is from Carnival, recognizable from its typical wing shaped chimney.

Het is vroeg in de namiddag en we wandelen in de binnenhaven van Miami Beach waar vele super jachten aangemeerd liggen. Op de achtergrond zien we de wolkenkrabbers van Miami centrum. De super jachten zijn ook te huur voor vakanties. Een makelaar adverteert prijzen tussen de 400.000$ en 750.000$ per week. Wie kan dit betalen? 

Het is tijd om naar South Pointe Park Pier te gaan, een fantastische plaats om de cruise schepen te zien vertrekken. We adviseren wel vooraf de vertrektijden op internet na te kijken want deze verschillen dag per dag. Meestal varen er schepen uit rond 17:00 uur. Het eerste grote schip is de Celebrity Reflection, één van onze favoriete schepen, waarop we een nieuwe cruise hebben geboekt volgend jaar. Het tweede schip is de Norwegian Escape, groter en voor een jonger freestyle publiek. Het laatste cruiseschip is van Carnival, te herkennen aan zijn typische vleugel vormige schouw.
